To Kill A Mockingbird Controversy

There has been much controversy over whether or not the novel To Kill a Mockingbird should be banned or not. This novel teaches students about the racism and prejudice of the 1930’s resulting in why the world is the way it is, as well as many important life lessons, therefore it should be continued to be taught in schools. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it teaches about life in the past and why the world is the way it is now, proving that this novel has the ability to effectively educate kids about the past and potential impact of human behaviour.

Some parents want this book banned because they are afraid that the book could influence bullies against African American children in today’s society. However, in any history book or historical fiction about the pre-Civil War times in the United States, the same facts or even worse are shown.

Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Racism is still an issue that can be seen in the twenty-first century. Although, tons of progress has been made over the last century, some still hold on to racist beliefs. The majority of classic American literature demonstrates the racism that was present in the early twentieth century. By looking at the theme of race in the American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, it is clear that people are quick to judge others based on their own opinions and feelings.

The concept of conflicting perspectives is consistently present in Harper Lees’ novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The text asks questions about current trends in society and the attitudes that cause people to ‘act like sheep” and conform while also expressing the need for individuality. It also brings into question the way the judicial system should be beyond reproach no matter what man is on trial, whether they be white or black. In a similar manner it also shows changing attitudes in regards to racism over time and in turn establish a conflicting perspective between the reader and characters of the novel.

Harper Lee completed the novel in 1957 and, after revisions, published it in 1960, just before the peak of the civil rights movement. John Hiett called it “a nuanced indictment of racism, [which] helped trigger the Civil Rights Movement and forced many Southerners to reexamine their attitudes.” While the critical responses to To Kill a Mockingbird were mixed: a number of critics found the narrative voice of a nine-year-old girl unconvincing and called the novel overly moralistic. It is a coming-of-age story focusing on the importance of empathy, perception, bravery, and acceptance and the book remains a staple of high school and college reading lists, beloved by millions of readers worldwide for its appealing depiction of childhood innocence, its scathing moral condemnation of racial prejudice, and its affirmation that human goodness can withstand the assault of evil. The novel has never been out of print and sells over a million copies each year (Sparknotes.com). This American classic, has been influencing readers for decades and will continue to do so.

The story “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is about a White woman, Mayella Ewell, accusing a Black man of rape. We would know right off the back who’s going to win the trial because the Whites were more superior in the 1930’s. Even though Mayella is powerful when it comes to race, she is powerless when it comes to class and gender.

Censorship only brings books down and makes the books sound more modern instead of in the time period they belong too. Censorship in “To Kill a Mockingbird” is one of the most controversial topics in literature. Using censorship would destroy the true values of the novel. Critics that challenge To Kill a Mockingbird aren’t look at the book as a whole but instead trying to think of the book at different sections. They are trying to just find the bad instead of finding the important values of the novel.

The famous philosopher and motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once stated that “If you can change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. To be able to change the perspective of a person is to change the perspective of the entire world. No one can fully understand how someone behaves until they understand a perspective other than their own. In To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters have made judgements before they can fully understand the truth. In a 2006 poll, To Kill a Mockingbird was at the top of the list of books that a person should read before they die. It even topped the Bible. with those statistics, you would think that this is one of the best books that has ever been written. However, I don't completely agree. To Kill a Mockingbird is an average book in my opinion, because the beginning is very slow and there were many irrelevant characters, but it has some very good messages and lessons to learn for kids and young adults.

I personally like the movie more than the book..I mean yes I know you said to not do that but I just don’t know how to start it anymore so hahaha. Anyways the book was barely alike to the movie. The book and the movie start off on the same setting..Though they don’t have same character names they both start off kind of alike. The book and the movie don’t know why the birds attack. When Nat walks to his house he sees that the birds are settling around it. In the movie they settle in the chimney waiting for them. The radio informs them both every five minutes.

Throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill A Mockingbird, many political and social issues occur. One major political issue in this book is unequal justice in the judicial system, or racial discrimination. Socially, poverty, child abuse, and gender discrimination are all issues present throughout the book. Although some of these occurrences may be minor, they all significantly impact the outcome of the book.

The world we live in isn’t perfect, neither are the people who live in it. Hate and judgement affect hundreds of millions of people negatively daily. Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a story that takes place in the 1930s that describes a period of Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch and a trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman. This story is relevant to teach to today’s youth because it depicts the struggle of minorities in life, the fundamentals of doing the right thing and it accurately displays the maturity that children can go through.

The world as we know it is made up of billions of people. Not one of these people are the same as the other. Though that doesn’t stop society as a whole from trying to establish one single standard for all the world’s different people to try to fit themselves into or be considered less than those who fit in.
