Pony always talks about how Soda rarely ever gets into trouble and how he thinks Darry loves him more than anyone else, everyone else always says that Darry does love him but Ponyboy is the type of boy that has to see or hear something from that person in order for him to believe what everyone else is saying.

After the death of the Curtis’ parents Darry as the eldest took on the role of the leader of the family, which at times caused disagreements and disputes over what was right. Ponyboy always felt Darry only cared about Sodapop and he was treated harshly and unfairly. Towards the end of the novel Ponyboy begins to see Darry’s true intentions and becomes appreciative. This realisation occurs when Darry arrives at the hospital overly concerned about Ponyboy’s condition, in a state Ponyboy had never seen him in before. He was no longer emotionless and for the first time in years he was crying, Ponyboy then realised ‘Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me. When he yelled “Ponyboy, where have you been all this time?” he meant “Ponyboy you’ve scared me to death. Please be careful because I couldn’t stand if anything happened to you”’ (pg.120). After losing his parents Darry had changed, he lived in fear of losing someone else he cared about which is why he often seemed harsh on Ponyboy, when all he wanted for him was to stay safe. Ponyboy’s realisation changed the way he thought about Darry, he realised he was trying to stop him from becoming a stereotypical hood with no motive in life influenced him to became thankful and appreciative for the discipline Darry implied.
