This I Believe

A.Attention Getter: How many of you like to travel? How many of you wish that you had all the time and money to travel around the world? I considered myself privilege to have the opportunity to visit different countries of the world. Some of the countries that I have visited include Japan, Singapore, Canada and the United States.

Adapting to a new environment is challenging for most people who first go abroad to study, so a person must be resourceful and resilient. When encountering numerous challenges, you should find some solutions to overcome it rather than give up. There is nothing quite like being on your own in a foreign country. You might find that studying abroad really brings out your independent nature. Students who study abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor. A benefit to studying abroad is the opportunity to discover yourself while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place by yourself can be overwhelming at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to solve the problems. From my travels, I also learned that there can be more than one solution to a problem. Indeed, having a variety of perspectives makes it easier to come up with approaches to different problems. My travel experience has strengthened my interpersonal skills, as well as my integrity and determination.

“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” Henry David Thoreau stood behind the fact that all change is a miracle that happens in every instant. World travel has the potential to introduce an individual to the various miracles that life has to offer through aspects like culture, scenery, and language. In fact, there is a psychological concept that goes by the name of the “Big Five.” The number five refers to the five most dominant characteristics of personality: openness, extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness and agreeableness. Meeting new people and exposing oneself with new culture is one of is an activity that is one of the main contributors to the openness factor of personality which in turn has a domino effect on the remaining four characteristics (“5 Ways…”). That being said, by travelling the world an individual is able to become more adventurous and well rounded.

When we interact with people from other cultures it is important to understand that there is a history behind how they view us and how we view them. Many cultures within our country, as well as throughout the world, have such different belief systems from ours that if we don’t make a point of learning about the history behind other belief systems

One fantastic factor about traveling to different countries is that I would have the chance to meet many new people. First of all, I enjoy getting to know people who have a different lifestyle as me because they all have different stories to tell. Also, it would be neat to relate to them even though we live so far away from each other and maybe even become friends. Lastly, I could learn new details about the country they live in, details that I wouldn't be able to just search up on the internet. That is why I want to travel the world and meet new people

Traveling can broaden ones mind and make them more creative. When traveling, the different culture can give a person new ideas and allow them think in a different way. One study by Galinksy, an American Social Physiologist, proved that traveling makes people more creative. Throughout the study, they examined directors in two hundred and seventy high-end fashion houses, and“ researchers found a clear correlation between time spent abroad and creative output: The brands who creative directors had lived and worked in other countries produced more consistently creative fashion lines than those whose directors had not (Galinksey).” Having a new insight to the world, and immersing yourself into a new culture and language can help open one’s eyes. “Why then the world's mine oyster/Which I with sword will open” (Shakespeare). Anyone has the opportunity to go where they would like, achieve what they wish to, but it will not always be easy. Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to see the whole world. Experience new things, see new sights, learn about new cultures. For my whole life, I have travelled, most notably before reaching the age of one with family, travelling to a new place to live, and travelling to various destinations with school.

I have done some traveling, but mostly for work. That was really cool! I came back feeling very fortunate for what I have. It was a total wake up call.

Modern students are expected to be culturally diverse in our globalized world. We are more internationally connected than ever and this requires us to have a better understanding of other cultures. Study abroad trips allow students to get a taste of other cultures by surrounding them with a new unknown environment. Living in another country pushes students befriend people from other backgrounds which gives them a broader understanding of other ways of living. The sampling of other cultures lets those who studied abroad to evaluate their own culture and realize the pros and cons. After working for 3 years, I was burnt out at work and wanted to rediscover myself and I could only think of travelling. But I always had this feeling that something is wrong. Neither I’d the money nor intention of wanderlust. I was just lost or maybe I want freedom of expression without being ending up in jail. I don’t know it yet. But one thing was sure and that was: I want to experience the world through the eyes of others. Living the lives of others or living with them provides you a window to enter their lives. I have always believed that travel breaks you free. My mind was conditioned to travel. I had changed almost a dozen schools by the time I completed my graduation. Oh boy!

First, I just want you to ask yourself a little and simple question. Why do you travel? Have you answered it? I sincerely want you to answer it before I do so, that will help you understand with more ease. The first one I thought of was to learn. Many people, in fact, love to travel to get to know a country’s culture, food, language and landmarks. This will help people be more culturally diverse, open-minded and usually more balanced people. The second reason I thought of was to have an adventure. Naturally, some people are more adventurous than others so they prefer doing something they have never done before. For instance, people who live near the ocean have the tendency to visit more mountainous places so they can have new experiences and do more radical activities. Another obvious reason is to spend some quality time with your family. Nowadays people work during most of their days and go back home already tired, meaning they have less time for their families and people they love than before. Thus, they often go for a journey together during holidays and sometimes even weekends. The final reason I have got is quite different

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” These words by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. perfectly describe how my travel experience in Singapore this past summer has changed my life. Traveling to Singapore has been an item on my bucket list that I never thought I would ever be able to accomplish at such a young age. Through my travel, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture by living life as a local while visiting the major tourist spots that the country had to offer. I also had firsthand experience with the Singaporean lifestyle and I was so amazed by the beauty of the country. Because of this, my travel to Singapore has given me a new perspective on countries and has broadened my horizons in terms of travelling to a new place.

Once we are exposed to the variety of cultures and mentalities of the world, we acquire a broad perspective which gives the freedom to step out of the society-constructed image of ourselves and to become the person who we really are. Moreover, travel fills our body, soul and mind with strength and positivity and all our thoughts, words, actions and emotions will then radiate from this inner core.

My greatest worry about studying in England is getting lost when I go out to explore. I hope to get rid of this worry by making sure I know how to read a map and understand how to use the transit system. I also hope to overcome this worry by making friends with other students who know their way around England. My greatest worry is meek compared to the skills I hope to acquire by studying in England. I believe I would develop intercultural competence and become tolerant to change and uncertainty. Developing the skill of intercultural competence would help me with my future career goals by becoming more empathetic towards other people's needs. With my career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist this is an important skill to have. We cannot assume everyone's needs are the same. Becoming tolerant to change and uncertainty would also influence my graduate school ambition because I would be in an entirely different environment than the one I am in now. If I acquire this skill set, I will have very few adjustment issues. It is an important skill to have in psychology where research is constantly changing and one must be
