Theodor Roosevelt, our 26th president, was a gruff politician who had a huge impact on America. He is known for his accomplishments in the political, social, and business world during the Progressive Era. His accomplishments helped shape America, and because of this influence, he is one of the faces found on Mount Rushmore. Theodor Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York, New York. As a child he was frail and timid, and as a result, most of his education was through tutors in his home before he went to college. On one occasion when he was against a bill to make manufacturing cigars in one’s home illegal. He however promptly changed his mind when he saw the conditions of the homes. “The tobacco was stowed about everywhere, alongside the foul bedding, and in a corner where there were scraps of food.” His disgust and shock validated his changing vote. During Roosevelt’s third term, he received a telegram that stated that both his wife and mother were very ill. They both died within hours of each other. In his diary, Roosevelt drew an X across most of the page, and wrote,” The light has gone out of my life.” After this tragic loss, he decided to go to a ranch that he had purchased in 1883 and become a rancher. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was not taken seriously by the locals as a real rancher, because they thought of him as a city New Yorker, who was not tough enough for the Dakota Badlands. He had to initially put up with their ridicule. But in the end, he proved them all wrong. On one occasion, he apprehended two criminals and watched them for hours before the authorities came. A newspaper wrote “Theodore is a Dakota Cowboy. Roosevelt went from being the 33rd governor of NY, to the vice president, and at 42 years of age, he became the highly respected successor of President McKinley. Roosevelt later was elected for a second term. Even though he achieved all these great things, there were surly challenges that laid in his path to greatness. The challenges that Roosevelt faced he overcame through perseverance and enforcing what he believed in. One of Roosevelt's most famous quotes is "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Theodore Roosevelt was born with asthma and three siblings, two younger siblings and one older sister. His asthma was so bad that sometimes he would wake up in the middle of night feeling like he was being smothered to death scaring both himself and his parents. After going on a family trip to the Alps, young Roosevelt found out that exercise minimized his asthma. He and his father did exercises together and strengthened his body. For his education, Roosevelt had lots of tutors that taught him French and German and other classical classes. Roosevelt found himself interested in zoology much to the delight of his cousins who enjoyed catching squirrels and such for amusement with him and making little museums.
After the death of Teddy’s mother and Alice, Theodore moved out to the Dakota Badlands to escape his grief. Once there, Teddy “soaked into the frontier lifestyle” and bought two ranches, the Maltese Cross Ranch and the Elkhorn ranch, and invested $40,000 in cattle for the Maltese Cross Ranch (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). “He flourished in the hardships of the western frontier, riding for days, hunting grizzly bears, herding cows as a rancher, and chasing outlaws as a frontier sheriff” (Miller Center).Teddy also was suited to the rancher look; he wore spurs, belt buckles, and had some pearl handled revolvers made by Tiffany’s, which was a famous jewelry store. He also had a fringed cowboy shirt made from buckskin. The whole outfit would have cost $100 which would amount to $1,000 today (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). Theodore headed back to the East after a harsh winter killed off most of his cattle in 1886 (Miller Center).
The first thing he did was join the Republican Party. This allowed him to be elected to the New York State Assembly. Prior to his term on the state assembly government jobs were given to those who helped elect politicians. Teddy believed the people who worked in government should be good at their jobs thus changing the landscape of government. Roosevelt enjoyed being in politics. In 1886 he ran for mayor of New York City but he ended up losing the election. In the 1900 election Theodore became vice president for William McKinley but in 1901 McKinley was assassinated so Teddy became president.
