In the novel ‘to kill a mockingbird’ Atticus Finch is seen as the true hero of the story, but is this necessarily true? ‘To kill a mockingbird is a story that follow the people of Maycomb in the prime of racism in America, the story is narrated by a young girl, scout, the story is seen through her eyes which helps highlight the way people thought way back when. A main character, Atticus, is Scout's father, he is a mature man that prides himself on treating people with fairness regardless of race, he chose a career as a lawyer to help people in need in his own way. Many characters in the novel display heroism in different ways, Harper Lee made sure to show a bit of heroism in characters even if it was in a small way, like Jem inviting Walter Cunningham Jr over to their place for food The most prominent points of heroism in the text are related in some way to the antagonist, Bob Ewell. Atticus takes the case for Tom Robinson who was accused of rape by Bob. Boo Radley however, saves the kids from Bob when he plans to kill them. Bob Ewell is shown early in the novel as a terrible person, he’s rude, cowardly and a drunkard, all the checks he gets go straight towards alcohol and not his 8 kids. He is extremely irresponsible as well, he sends his kids to school for only one day of the year and he only does that because it’s illegal otherwise, “He’s a Ewell ma’am, whole school’s full of ‘em. They come first day every year and then leave”. Furthermore, him and his eldest child Mayella make a plan to get Tom Robinson arrested Mayella Ewell tries to seduce Tom Robinson, but Tom is a loyal married man and he refuses her, so as revenge, Mayella and Bob accuse him of rape, the case is taken to court and Tom Robinson is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, even though Atticus gave a very compelling argument. Moreover, after the trial takes place, Bob is even more dastardly and he plans on getting back at atticus because he made a fool of him in the court One night, when Jem and Scout were walking home from a halloween party, Bob attacks them with a knife, scout tries to run away but due to the costume she is wearing, she falls over, Bob's knife shreds the metal mesh of the costume but leaves scout fine, in all the
