"Checkers," The American Dog in Disguise: A Rhetorical Analysis of Nixon's Address In "The Checkers Speech," Richard Nixon responds to criticism regarding an alleged "secret fund." At this time, 1952, Nixon was running for vice president with presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was enjoying enormous popularity when the rumor surfaced one month before the election. Nixon was accused of accepting a supplemental salary of $18,000 dollars, contributed by a group of supporters back in his home state of California. There were also rumors that Eisenhower would drop Nixon from the ticket. So Nixon was forced to come up with a remedy for the untimely situation. Not only did he have to convince the American people he was …show more content…
Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by showing that he is qualified to clean up corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixon's speech it has a very easy, logical pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats, but at the same time make republicans, including himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as "I" did and make their finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience to believe a lot of things that may or may not have been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he made his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential candidate. Three, rich men such as "Governor Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father" should not deserve to be president. But, a "modest man" such as himself or Eisenhower, a common man that "God must have loved," should have that chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he, the republican candidates, are qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only left the American public with the option of electing the
“There is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (The Bible, Prov. 16:25). Thoughts that come to men stem from their participation in society or their natural state of good and evil. However, society’s morals mask the natural man—who is more vulnerable to natural evil than good. Because of this, every man is susceptible to ignorance and savagery. William Golding exemplifies this idea in his novel Lord of the Flies. When a group of military boys find themselves stranded on a deserted island, their ignorance soon leads to the inevitable savagery present in the end of the novel. The maturation process of Ralph illustrates the fight between man’s tendencies of natural evil and natural good when morals
Sometimes whats ideal in a situation is not what the truth of the situation and can cause your ideals to be lost. In William Golding’s novel, “Lord of the Flies”, he demonstrates a shift in some of the characters from the thought of idealism to the reality and truth of the world. Ralph is a good example of this shift, he starts out thinking the island will be a fun place and they’ll have fun waiting to be rescued, but soon he realizes that there is going to be more hardship and struggles to keep up the moral and hope of rescue. In the book Ralph wanted to keep everyone safe and get them off the island, but Jack wants to be a leader and messes up his plans, making it so that Ralph is alone in his plan to get rescued.
William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies focuses mainly on a group of boys’ who have been stranded on an uninhabited island where they face many problems with themselves and others. One of the many dilemma’s within this story was the division of power between Ralph and Jack. They both had qualities of a leader, but they had different intentions with where they wanted to go; Jack was primarily the villain in this story showing savagery, while Ralph was civilized. So, why do the boys’ join someone who is cruel? Jack knows that he can manipulate their fears and use activities that are relatable to them because they are still little kids. Although it might seem devious, Jack is intelligent by using these tactics because they prove to be
Golding was a pessimistic man but he was also a truthful man. He understood that man is inherently evil and wrote a book explaining his knowledge to the world. This was a bold move but he wrote the Lord of the Flies because he had a message that he needed to unveil. Why was this message so significant? He saw the brutality of WWII from the position of a British soldier in the Royal Navy. He saw people being slaughtered in front of him. The cruelties of war can only be described in a basic way through a children’s book because if he were to go into detail everyone would be throwing up their lattes and pink, sprinkled pop-tarts. However, his purpose was to write this novel and if he chose not to do it, there would have been one more reason for people to be naive in their beliefs of this world. Instead, he was a truthful man who was not afraid to divulge the necessary information to make people stop and think about their actions. Therefore, doesn’t it make sense that Golding would write a novel arguing his point of the inherent evil of man?
Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States elected in January of 1968 winning one of the closest elections in history. Nixon beat Humphrey by less than 500,000 votes (“Richard Nixon Elected President.”). Neither Richard Nixon or Humphrey received over 50 percent of the popular votes. Shortly before the next election on July 17, 1972 Burglars were arrested after breaking into Democratic National Committee. At this time the country was in the Vietnam War and the country was very much divided, and Nixon needed an advantage to win his reelections. Prior to the burglars being caught and arrested, they had previously bugged the phones, but the wiretaps failed to work properly. At approximately 2:30 a.m. the same men broke into the Democratic National Committee and tried to replant new microphones. While they were inside planting microphones a security guard noticed tape around several of the locks on the doors and called the cops. The cops showed up Just seconds before the burglars were planning to leave and caught them in the action.
There is a long history in American politics of poor relationships between presidents and their vice presidents. One example of this, is the relationship between Republican President Dwight Eisenhower and his Vice President Richard Nixon. Nixon served as Eisenhower’s vice president for eight years throughout the 1950s. As Eisenhower's presidency term was soon to be over, and Nixon was planning to run for president against John F. Kennedy; Eisenhower (Ike) was given an easy opportunity to credit his fellow Republican and Vice President. However, when Eisenhower was asked during a news conference what proposals of Nixon's he had adopted, his response was astonishing. "If you give me a week, I might think of one," Eisenhower said. "I don't remember." Nixon lost one of the closest elections in history to John F. Kennedy. (Garcia, Eric. “Political Friendly Fire.” Roll Call, 28 Apr. 2016. Web. 5 Mar. 2018. (-- removed HTML --)
Nixon and Eisenhower’s victory led them both to being reelected in 1956, after surviving Republican attempts to replace Nixon. As vice-president, much of Nixon"s time was spent representing the president before Congress and on trips abroad as a goodwill ambassador, where he was occasionally the target of anti-US feelings. As Eisenhower neared the end of his second term as president, he endorsed Nixon, who received an impressive vote in party primaries and all but ten of the delegates ' votes on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention. An unusual feature of the campaign was a series of face-to-face discussions between Nixon and his Democratic opponent, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was widely regarded as the winner of the debates, which helped him win the election.

“I know the heart of America is good,” are words of former President Richard Nixon, whose endless efforts made a significant impact on the history of America during an era of Cold War and increased tensions. Inaugural addresses have been a custom since the first president of America, and have been religiously followed by every president afterwards. Furthermore, Nixon’s vision of fostering a better nation remained constant in both of his inaugural addresses, and his actions were successful in fulfilling his vision effectively. Nixon brought great change both domestically and internationally in the United States.
Richard Nixon decided to run for President in January of 1968. “Portraying himself as a figure of stability in a time of national upheaval, Nixon promised a return to traditional values and ‘law and order.’” (Gould 23) After being elected into office, Nixon spent the majority of his first term in office focusing mainly on foreign policy initiatives. Nixon was creating a plan to assure an income for all Americans, which became known as the Family Assistance Plan in August 1969. As President, Richard Nixon said in a speech, “Do you want to make a point or do you want to make a change? Do you want to get something off your chest, or do you want to get something done?”
Team 13 checking in. In regards to your question about when the ad would be ran, I believe with the theming being based essentially around movies, Best Buy would simply need to swap out the Oscar image for whichever movie they would be looking to promote at that time. With the tag line, if you drop word golden you they could then re use it for another promo at a future date.
The second conflict, man versus man, is also an external conflict. This conflict is just between the two head of each family. The hatred toward the opposite family was passed on to the current heads of each family: Ulrich, the head of the Gradwitz family, and Georg, head of the Znaeym family. The two men hate each other due to their family
The American people were looking for a strong leader and with Nixon serving as the Vice President he was obviously the better candidate. Not to mention, JFK was a young senator of Catholic faith from Massachusetts who lack the experience of foreign policy. Of course, what many thought JFK lack changed the night of the first presidential debate. Once the debate ended many radio listeners felt Nixion had won but those who watched on television, 74 million viewers, agreed that Kennedy won the debate (Webley, 2010). The television captured Nixon as a pale and sweaty candidate while JFK appeared confident and calm. The way JFK communicated on television amplified his political influence with the public. JFK preparedness allowed him to connect with the audience, which was a major turning point for the election. JFK would go on winning the popular vote 49.7 percent to 49.5 percent, with polls revealing that voters claimed the debate influence them (History.com Staff,
I favor higher salaries for teachers. But, as Senator Kennedy said in January of this year in this same press conference, the way that you get higher salaries for teachers is to support school construction, which means that all the local school districts in the various states then have money, which is freed to raise the standards for teachers ' salaries.” I felt that Nixon had an ineffective approach in answering this question because he used Kennedy’s thoughts about what he thought about raising teacher salary instead of his own. Nixon then moves into logos when he mentions how the teacher salaries increases “Teachers ' salaries very fortunately have gone up fifty percent in the last eight years as against only a thirty-four percent rise for other salaries.” He then goes into pathos when he disagrees with the teacher salary increase and states he wishes it was more. “This is not enough; it should be more.” I found this statement ineffective because even though Nixon disagrees with how much teachers makes he had voted against increasing teacher’s salary as he states “I think that the reason that I voted against having the federal government, uh - pay teachers ' salaries was probably the very reason that concerned Senator Kennedy
