This world has never been as dependent on technology, especially computers, as it is today. “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle focuses on how the world has changed through this growing dependence, and how the growing dependence is negatively impacting humans around the country. Sherry Turkle is a well-known professor at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the author of nine books and multiple essays, and she has dedicated her life to studying the relationship between humans and technology. The essay “How Computers Change the Way We Think” was written by Sherry Turkle, a well-known professor at MIT. Professor Turkle teaches Social Studies of Science and Technology, and she has written nine books and multiple essays on the relationship between humans and technology today. The thesis of Turkle’s essay is that the technology used to help humans work/think has started changing the way people think, and will continue to if there is no change. One of the most worrisome, though, is that new technology allows for people’s privacy to be breached and, unfortunately, the rising generations are either unaware or this, or they are indifferent to it. Turkle believes that another problem with the close relationship between humans and computer is that many online “worlds” allow young kids to toy with their identity online and lose who they really are. For people that may be shy or lonely in real life, the internet enables them to meet people and build “friendships” while never leaving their house. One of the problems Turkle elaborates on most, however, is the impact of PowerPoint Presentations on elementary school classrooms. The author states that this software encourages young students to present to their peers, when they should be learning to converse with each other and work together as a team. “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle is more than just an essay, it is a warning to everyone that people must start to recognize the negative consequences that come along with technology, and change how things are done. Not only does the internet allow for the possibility of privacy breaching, but technology, as a whole, is starting to be designed for the use of companionship, not productivity. According to the author, humanity can not go on living this way; it is time for to learn how to better balance technology in everyday
