It is no question that technology is changing people and the way we live. Almost every person depends on technology in some way to get through the day. Weather its smartphones, washing machines, toasters, or refrigerators, all of these common technologies were invented to increase our productivity and make life easier. The underlining question in this essay is to highlight the concerns of technology and prove that people are being blurred in their connections to digital reality and physical reality, work life and family, and our dependency on technology.

As day progresses so as technology. In the modern society high technology devices have become indispensable to human. Electronic machines have gradually been starting to replace human work. At a factory work place, restaurant kitchen, and household laundry rooms, the improvement of technology can be seen anywhere. Mobile phone, which has only become prevalent in a few decades, can be found in anyone’s jeans pocket. However, is this situation an evolution to a new era or an over-reliance on technology. Sherry Turkle, the author of “The Empathy Diaries” expresses her concern on modern generation overusing electronic devices. She points out her main argument that the situation has deteriorated to the extend where children are losing their empathy and ability to social. Turkle, promoting the importance of conversation, not only criticize young generations for being overly obsess with electronic devices, but also oppose the ones who understand the the significance of conversation for not passing down the knowledge. It is clear that in Turkle’s perspective the improvement of technology has brought up issues that do not exist ever before. Despite that the benefit form electronic devices are inevitable the problems it brings about can never be look down. On the condition that people do not have enough self-control to overcome with the tempt form high technology devices can not only bring human short term benefits but lifetime long harm with its overly thoughtful benefits.

The use of technology has catalyzed society into an era that is increasingly interconnected yet impersonal at the same time. Despite technology’s endless list of assets, many fail to acknowledge its shortcomings when mentioning what is lost as a result of using it. Although in “Great to Watch” by Maggie Nelson, she is not afraid to share her skepticism of technology, as well as the role it plays in desensitizing individuals on a day-to-day basis. The internet is an invaluable resource to many because it is a public domain for sharing ideas, opinions, and knowledge that any and everyone can have access to. Technology has made it easier for us to fix our mistakes but not learn from them. Turkle had met professors at MIT when students had transitioned from slide rules to calculators. Without a doubt, computers make our lives easier, so easy that we are accustomed to turning to computers to think for us. Computers are tools to support knowledge and should not be interrupted as a replacement for an education or social interaction.

Thesis Statement: I believe that the large increase of dependency that humans have developed with computers may lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Computers are still continuing to evolve and the use of this device is now being used for a variety of reasons in everyday life. Moreover, this is starting to question people on whether individuals are becoming too reliant on this processing machine. With technology advancing faster and faster, it seems to have taken control over our lives. Society today spends more time on the internet than anything else, which means there’s a rapid growing of corrosion over our minds. When we use technology, such as watching television or surfing the web, do we even use our brains at all? Today, most of us live in our heads rather than in the real world. Technological regression in the tracking of smartphones, the inclination of society’s laziness, and the abuse of features such as posting/commenting have all contributed to a dystopian world.

In “Digital Demands: The Challenges of Constant Connectivity” by Sherry Turkle, who is a professor, she talks in an interview about how people spend more time on their phones, doing everything as easy as possible, rather than doing it in person. People would rather sit on their technology instead of enjoying life outside of social media and technology. Using technology makes everything easier instead of doing hard work to get something done. Sherry Turkle’s article is effective because she uses her ethos as an MIT professor and strong evidence through examples that show what is lost by an over reliance on technology and multitasking.

We as a community and generation have become dependent on technology. This is a controversial issue many find themselves on one side or the other, although a “gray area” exists. Sherry Turkle, MIT professor, finds herself in this gray area yet, she is more lenient to dismissing technology. She writes numerous articles such as: The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit (1984) and Alone Together (2011), in which she says technology, primarily cell phones, are problematic to advancing culture. Turkle studied present technology for fifteen years, making her quite knowledgeable on this subject. Turkle addresses technology in her essay The Flight from Conversation, but has many pros and cons to her reasoning.

In the last twenty years, technology has been changing deeply our society: habits, style of life, and menagement of time are completely different. The globalization of the markets and information, the massive diffusion of mobiles and internet, have created many advantages in our workplaces, in our houses, in our cities but on the other hand they have reduced the liberty and the privacy of the individual person and their own goods.
