People do not remember every emotion they have felt but we will always remember the feeling of being lonely. No matter how strong someone is or how happy someone seems to be. Loneliness have infected their lives and changed them. The timeless novel To kill a mockingbird teaches one of the many universal lessons, that everyone experiences loneliness. Harper Lee clearly shows that loneliness exists in the community of Maycomb through the characters Mayella Ewell, Boo Radley, and Mrs. Dubose.

Loneliness is an emotional response to a lack of companionship. Loneliness is also a lack of companionship. In the book of mice and men, all the characters portray loneliness in one way or another. This longing of others is a very powerful feeling and can compared to, in some aspects, the survival instinct. The central message of the title Of Mice and Men is loneliness.

Mother Teresa once said “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” (Mother Teresa). Mother Teresa is trying to express, being alone is the worst feeling and nobody can fight against loneliness. Loneliness is something can isolate the body in person. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, some characters like Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife, they feel desolated because they cannot express themselves.

Loneliness can be caused by many different types of discrimination, especially in a society full of oppression and stereotypes. In today's society, loneliness appears in many different cases. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, illustrates how the characters suffer from loneliness and isolation.

“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place”(Steinbeck,13). Loneliness can negatively impact peoples lives by causing them to act, look, speak different and be less of themselves. Loneliness isolates and dehumanizes the victim.

Loneliness is usually an unpleasant, emotional state in response to emptiness and isolation. Loneliness isn’t just wanting friends or wanting to go out and do stuff with another person. It’s also the fear of being disconnected or cut off by people you care about, or just people in your life. Loneliness can cause insecurity, depression, and anxiety.

In the book of short stories, The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury portrays the theme of loneliness quite often. These stories are all about America going to and from Mars several times, so families get split up, friends have to leave each other, and people die so loneliness is unavoidable. There are several moments when characters talk about being lonely or feeling lonely but I’m only going to touch on the subject. One moment is where a man wants to get on a rocket to Mars but is not allowed to. Another is when a group of the Lonely Ones leaves Earth.

According to Dr. Black, “Being alone is not necessarily to be lonely” (1). Essentially, being alone is a physical condition in which one is isolated from others. However, an individual may be lonely within a group of people. Therefore, being alone is a condition that can be perceived by the eye, but loneliness is merely a state of mind. An example of this concept is presented by Thoreau when he states that “a farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome” (1). Since he is working by himself, the farmer may be perceived as being alone. However, in reality, he may be physically isolated, but should not be described as being lonely. The farmer works diligently and therefore, has a task on his mind. Consequently, he does not understand how the Cambridge student can sit alone for most of the day without a sense of ennui. However, the student is still focused on his task while it may not be working the field or chopping lumber. An individual may be alone, but if one is working on a specific task, loneliness may not occur. Additionally, he describes many elements of nature as existing alone. Thoreau proclaims, “I am no more lonely than a single mullein or dandelion in a pasture” (3). He is discussing how elements of nature may be isolated but do not experience loneliness. The story of the fall of mankind, explored by John Milton in his epic Paradise Lost, has a way of defining the roles of solitude through its characters, and through those definitions the effects solitude has overall. The epic explores how the good and bad of what happens when one is left alone in their thought, and deep into it, a question is asked by a main character, “who can enjoy alone, or all enjoying, what contentment find?” (Book 8. Line 365-66). The way alone is defined is “having no one else present, on one’s own”; “taking or acting on its own”; and “no one or nothing else besides, exclusive of all other people or things”. All three definitions will be explored, because in ways each definition applies to more than one character, and some characters are defined by more than one definition of alone. The way solitude is presented in Paradise Lost is that the time spent in solitude distances the characters from each other, and allows for both good and evil to come from their time spent alone. The main characters define solitude in their own way, some even use more definitions than others, and they share definitions among each other. "No man is an island." This famous quotation explains the nature of man as a social being. It is truly a fact that human beings cannot exist in isolation. They need to be interdependent with each other in order to survive. This interdependence is needed because a human being alone will not be able to fill his own social needs, and his material necessities came from other people as well. All acts of society such as sex, love, and dependence are essential for the survival of any species. Interaction and socialization is the only way to prevent people from isolation, from solitude.
