Global warming is a terrifying thing to think about. People try to ignore it because they are afraid of what it will cause. They don’t want to accept what scientists are saying, “Humans are to blame”. I, being a future scientist, also believe that humanity is the cause of global warming. This believe of mine stemmed from a class I took in middle school that put us, students, in the shoes of United Nations members. We had to take sides on issues such as deforestation and the usage of fossil fuels. I was liberated from my ignorance and I learned that we were “killing” our planet and potentially ourselves. Although there is plenty of scientific evidence that confirms that humans are the cause of global warming, some people refuse to accept it. In my mind there was no doubt that global warming was real and that humans were the cause, but I couldn’t wrap my head around the opposing view points of politicians, and governments. As a scientist I want the world to accept global warming and to set out on a path to prevent it. To do this I needed to understand all the viewpoints that people and governments have towards global warming. People have long suspected that human activity could affect the local climate. However, the discovery of ice ages that span across the entire globe seemed impossible for humans to have caused. If humans didn’t cause it then what did? Was it the variations in the suns heat, volcano’s erupting, or maybe the composition of the air? In the late 1800’s a
There is an issue on this planet that will define this generation. The issue is climate change. Global warming. A world on the collapse as our oceans are acidified, our air polluted, our forests disappearing, and human rights issues getting worse. It seems that people are not aware of how big climate change actually is. It’s not something that only takes place on the ice caps or in the forests on the far corners of the world. This is an issue that happens here, and now. It’s real. It’s happening.
As the threat of climate change continues to grow the world is desperately looking for an alternative source of energy. There are numerous promising replacements, but nuclear energy is by far the most opposed. Despite the fact that Australia has never contained any nuclear power plants, uranium produced energy and mining have been a highly debated topic in the continent for decades due to the concern over safety and economics. If the aim is to reduce the climate impact of electric power generation in Australia, there are less expensive and hazardous ways to attempt it than expanding nuclear power. Although nuclear energy does not produce air pollution, it is a danger to human health, damaging to the environment, exorbitantly expensive and extremely time-consuming, proving that it is not a suitable alternative to coal power for Australia.
Global climate has been changing throughout history; just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advances and retreats. The abrupt end of the last ice age, about 7,000 years ago, marked the beginning of the modern climate era and of human civilization. Global warming has gradually increased the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. There is compelling evidence of rapid climate change because of different sea levels rising, glacial retreat, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, extreme weather, ocean acidification and decreased snow cover.
Fall is a season loved by many because of the changing leaves, anticipation of Halloween, and of course the cool weather. Living in Las Vegas, I have always looked forward to the beginning of fall after the overbearingly hot summers. As I am sitting in my living room with the air conditioning blasting, I am pressed with a question- why is it 100 degrees in the middle of October? This steady increase in temperature is a direct result of climate change, although some scientists may disagree, climate change is happening, and this change can be clearly identified by such indicators. By defining climate change, displaying the unnatural causes, and portraying how this affects us, I intend to then bring light to how we can lower the risks of the unintended consequences brought on by future climate change.
Global warming comes down to the number of people who enjoy things, like the winter season, a nice home cooked meal, and people who know someone suffering because of an illness. We all have something in common which is in the hands of climate change. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all of those things are gone if we continue on treating the planet in the fashion that we are. It’s time to stop throwing Global Warming to the side like a pair of dirty socks. It is here, and it is not going away. I consider it to be one of the most monumental issues of our time and most people are still in denial or inactive in making adjustments for a change. We all live on this planet, let's start treating it like we do, because what we put in, is what we are going to get back.
Have you ever wondered why people tell you not to drink water when it is raining outside? Well the answer is simple pollution has affected our water source by ground and in air. This is rain is most likely to be in high population cities called acid rain. This acid rain not just harms people, but also harms animals and plants. According to British Broadcast Company (BBC), In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over 50 tons of dead fish were taken from the lagoon the scientist have figured that they fishes were deprived of oxygen because of a phenomenon called algae bloom which was caused by pollution of sewage during this period of time. Pollution is our worst enemy, but it is also a lesson that we can learned and conquered with our new technology and with the help of society.
Global warming or also known as climate change has always been a part of the earth’s history. Paleo-climatic and instrumental data had been collected over the last
In late 2012, the Wall Street Journal published an article written and supported by sixteen scientists called, “No Need to Panic About Global Warming.” The article’s main argument claimed mainstream climate experts were wrong about the effect greater carbon dioxide levels had on the environment as well as the threat global warming posed to society. The contrarian scientists attempted to refute mainstream scientific findings that carbon dioxide levels were rising rapidly throughout the past decade and that carbon dioxide itself was a pollutant. The dissenting scientists claimed that influxes of CO2 throughout the earth’s atmosphere over time has actually been beneficial to the environment and that global warming is not the impending threat
The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.
This paper deciphers the risks and damages associated with global warming. All the hazards are discussed in detail along with living and nonliving factors that causes or are affected by global warming. Measures to attain sustainability are also discussed thoroughly. Benefits and challenges to attain sustainability are also argued.
Many people who watch¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ news daily knows that it often display either social unrest, financial crises, or political struggle such as the Syrian war. One reason why Syrians are engaged in a war is that they are experiencing extreme heat and drought which causes them to be more rebellious and aggressive. The underlying cause of these trouble can be due to global warming. Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere because some of the sun’s ray cannot escape. It is a worldwide phenomenon that impacts each and every one of us because it cause irregular climate patterns, increase the sea levels, and decrease human living standards.
With the increasingly serious problem of global warming, Australia’s climate has warmed since 1950. ("State of the Climate 2014: Bureau of Meteorology", 2016) Compared with air conditioners which required for high cost, electricity expense and health hazard (under an enclosed environment, there has poor air circulation and air quality which would have negative effect for human body. Moreover, without appropriate maintenance, some particulate matter such as bacterial, pesticides and allergens can enter houses from outside environment which will cause health problems.) (McCarthy, Ludwig, Brown, Vaughn, & Roberts, 2013)
A social issue is defined as an area of conflict in a social setting that influences different people and is often out of reach of the control of an individual or local geographical authority (Weart 73). Some social problems, however, are not perceived universally as such, resulting in a difference in opinion between different groups. Other social issues are universally recognized as justifiable and, therefore, are addressed by everyone. Global warming is a social issue that traverses national borders, making it an international concern. It is a social problem because many diverse social groups from all over the globe have viewed it as a cause for concern (Weart 74). Nations have come together and tried to fight
Human activities have been identified as the most significant cause of recent climate change; it is often referred to ‘Global Warming’. The main cause of global warming is emission of greenhouse gases .The main source of energy today - coal, gases and oil produce greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide. Nuclear energy can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. It is used to generate electric power but unlike fossil fuels it does not emit greenhouse gases. Therefore, the best possible solution to limit the emission of greenhouse gases and to control change in climate .The major reasons to challenge the above thesis are reliability and efficiency of nuclear power, low greenhouse gas emissions and low cost electricity production from nuclear energy.
Ever since the twenty-first century, the injury and menace posed by global climate change to human being has long been acknowledged by public. In the face of global warming, a series of resulting problems inflict a serious threat on the nature environment, which is the material base of the human being depending on. Therefore, climate change is no longer just a discipline problem but also has gradually become a major social problem, which has draw a common concern for us humans. During this, the resulting problems coming with the climate change has been transforming from oneness to diversification, from being known to being unknown. Various new phenomena lead to the change to human survival state. Most importantly, disaster in different
