Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing dropouts among young people who are most at-risk. Mullins High School is a 100% free lunch qualified school where students look for encouragement. Mullins High School adopted this program to develop leadership skills and soft skills that are essential for our students to be prepared for college and career ready. As an intern, I take this opportunity to determine the support provided by these extra-curricular programs in achieving the vision of the institution. Mullins High school is blessed to have Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program. The program coordinator Ms. T is proud of her student members and their highly supportive parents.

The school is responsible for designing and implementing strategies to reach the educational goals of students. The particular high school beliefs that all kids can learn and that the mission of this school is to challenge each student to learn, achieve, and fulfill his /her potential. Dr. Charleyse Pratt serves as the assistant vice president of multicultural affairs and engagement of Cleveland state university. In this role her primary responsibilities include coordinating Learning Communities Programs and Partnerships at Cleveland State as well as directing initiatives for the Cleveland Transfer Connection. The transfer connection partnership is with Cuyahoga county Community College’s where students are able to begin associate or undergraduate studies to earn a degree and then transfer to Cleveland State to complete the four-year baccalaureate degree. The Cleveland Transfer Connection (CTC) at Tri-C and Cleveland State University is a Learning Communities program unique to Cleveland because it provides services from two institutions and offers two degrees (an Associate’s and a Bachelor’s) in one community of students. Dr Pratt’s driving philosophy is to create opportunities while disarming challenges for students who have a desire to gain an education but now need the preparation to be successful in a classroom. Her approach is student-centered support, leadership training and resource management to better navigate the academic journey toward graduation.

As an observer at David Lawrence Elementary School, I was able to attend an event located at Florida International University located in North Miami, Florida conducted by David Lawrence and MAST@FIU High School. The event took place on November 23rd 2015. The school’s administrators from David Lawrence, along with eight grade teachers, parents and students also attended the event. The purpose of the event was to recruit students from David Lawrence Elementary School who will be transitioning from Middle School to High School the next school year. During the session valuable information was given to parents in regards to the excellent educational opportunities offer at MAST (Marine Academy of Science and Technology).

It is difficult for me to describe my four years at Wilmington High School in a way that brings it to life on paper; however, I feel I can best explain my purpose throughout high school with one quote. High school students are the leaders and problem solvers of the future. We students need to understand community issues so that we can resolve them and provide help where it is needed. High school students also offer new and unique ideas that adults would never consider. Every successful community has opinions and inputs from all members of the community, not just the older adults. By high school students having knowledge of community issues, the students can impact and influence issues that affect less represented minorities. I can play a role in making a difference by serving my community. I can volunteer my time and effort to better the lives of people needing help. I can raise awareness of issues that typically get skipped over by voicing my opinion. I can work to lead groups and organizations that help and serve people in need in my local community. Also, through the help of the T4T board, I could give money and support to people already in the community performing acts of kindness and compassion. I can make a difference in the community by having and raising awareness to issues in the community that are often ignored and rejected.
