Appropriate behaviour must apply to both student and teacher. I, as a teacher, must follow a Code of Practice in order foster individual growth and learning. I believe that in order to maintain a safe classroom-learning environment I as the teacher need to create and demonstrate positive boundaries, letting the students know that I am in charge. Setting constructive boundaries prevents conflict amongst students, instead of students correcting one another they allow me as the teacher to respond to inappropriate behaviors. Also as the teacher, I will demonstrate to my students how they should respond to inappropriate behavior from their peers.

Whilst planning learning, examples of boundaries to consider, are the requirements of the awarding body or the organisation the teacher is working for, along with legal obligations such as Health and Safety. The teacher should ensure compliance for their own and their students' wellbeing.

As a teacher my goal is to challenge students, cover the required curriculum and provide them with the necessary support and resources that will enable them to achieve to their best potential. My primary responsibility is to promote students’ social, emotional, intellectual and physical development as they learn. I believe that prevention of inappropriate behaviour needs to be applied within the classroom to enable students to be actively engaged with their learning. Thus, teaching young minds is a role which I believe is full of challenges, responsibilities and immense satisfaction.

One such standard of behaviour, is a high level of respect. Whitton et al. (2016) uphold this belief, as they state that students need to develop respect for each other and the teacher for group work to be beneficial and successful. Also, respect for the gaining of knowledge, power or knowledge and the specific content being explored is also imperative. Whitton et al. (2016) also raise the idea that a high level of respect must be maintained by all students. This is because even if only one student shows disrespect, their viewpoint can easily spread throughout the group and prevent the whole group from focusing on the activity and completing the work. Additionally, the use of good communication skills, both verbal and non verbal, must be enforced. The job of being a teacher is not only challenging in the aspect of having to effectively teach students material and do such in a great learning environment, but teachers also have standards that they must practice to ensure that they are creating good learning environments for their students. Just as there are learning standards for the teachers to teach the students, there are standards that the teachers must learn before become truly effective teachers.

At the beginning of the school year, the teacher must ensure that he/she has classroom rules and procedures that are expected. Students are aware of the rules of the classroom and the teacher. When the teacher catches a student using appropriate behavior it is very important to praise them; focus more on the positive rather than dwelling on the negative actions. Within the learning environment, setting ground rules is necessary. Ground rules set the expectation and also bring order to the classroom. I believe teachers need the respect of their students. To gain respect one must mind her own behavior not only in the classroom but also in the community. One way to gain mutual respect is to immediately become involved in the students life so the student doesn’t feel like they aren 't welcomed. Once we get involved in the students’ life and start collaborating with them and their parents/guardians, we are able to discover more about their background and learning style. It is important that we are considerate of various economic, social, cultural and religious barriers. I need to be prepared for every class and provide lessons that are free from any bias’ and custom to all the students learning needs. I believe that all teachers want to discipline their students rather than manage them. If we manage our students we are acting as the head person who has all control over them. If we discipline our students, we are instructing them on how to obey rules and follow certain behaviors and mannerisms that push towards a coach and teacher figure.

There are many different ways to run a successful and effective classroom. Numerous people have tried to give me the best advice for making things work, but ultimately it will be my choice to decide what works best for me. By assessing the students' needs, I will be able to provide a curriculum and classroom environment that will hopefully motivate their learning.
