Against Music
Mo Tzu’s “Against Music” Has a strange opinion on music, he believes that music should be condemned, and not be listened to. When he was alive from (470-391 BCE) Mo Tzu was not like all the other philosophers of his time in ancient China. He believed that music was only good for a very small number of people, the rich which conflicted with Confucianism which said it was a force of good. In the essay he uses various examples of why music in not good and should be condemned. One of Mo Tzu’s many reasons for condemning music includes, that it does not benefit the common people and only looks to entertain the rich. I believe he is wrong, in the essay he states “Their music making interferes to such an extent with peoples efforts to produce food and clothing”. I disagree with this statement everyday people listen to music and get things done an example of this is listening to music and doing homework I can personally relate to this one. People in college like me use music as a way to focus ourselves. Sometimes in some situations it can be distracting, I find especially if the music has lots of singing it can be distracting as opposed to music with only instruments. He also speaks as if music is some sort of drug that prevents us from reaching our goals because it distracts us. He is wrong as I stated before sometimes music can be a distraction, but to say it stops us from reaching our goals, and doing our basic tasks is just wrong. I listen to music everyday it is a part of my life just as much as eating, and sleeping. And I have done many great things and am on a path to a productive life as an adult. Music has helped me along the way to get through some rough times and some good ones. I disagree with what Mo Tzu says about music. The music shaped society during the 1900s, helping in the development of society’s social history. Music and society are highly influenced by one another. Music both inspires and motivates people to do what they feel is right. When we realize how they correspond with each other, it brings others together, for example, “On February 9, 1964, an estimated 70 million Americans tuned into the Ed Sullivan show”(Wong, 39), all different kinds of people in America came together to watch what was called “The Beatlemania”, which featured The Beatles. The Beatles inspired other music artists to push the way they play music in a new way. The more music being played, the more media it would receive, which would bring in more profits. Music is in every culture, such as, Christians who sued music as a praise to Christ, to thank him and worship his holiness. It is widely varied between all times, places and cultures. People express their emotions and ideas through their music. Music expresses people’s emotions, concerns, and feelings about situations like, the Civil Rights Movement.
Most of the time, when we listen to a song, we don’t listen to the words, or what message they are trying to give us. Each song out there has a message in the lyrics somewhere. For this assignment, we were to analyze a song and the lyrics and find the thesis of that song. With thesis, I mean what the message within the song is trying to tell us. The song “I hope you dance” by Lee Ann Womack has a good thesis in some ways, but the thesis could also be argumentative also.
Imagine the number one song of the year with the most downloads, streaming numbers and views on Youtube could not be nominated for a Grammy. “Musical is a universal experience. With few exceptions, all humans perceive musical pitch, tone, timbre, and harmony. We listen to music to relax, to help us think, to celebrate, and grieve. Our emotional responses to music have been noted in literature, poetry, and drama. Most instructors didn’t bother using music in order to help retain information. It was almost as if it was forgotten about. Music is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity.Music provides a powerful form of expression that at its most basic level helps to entertain while containing the power to cause revolutions. It is a way for people to express themselves through beats, lyrics, pitches and ranges. Imagine owning a music store, and a new album about police brutality is brought to your store for you to sell. An undercover cop came in and bought the album, and told you that if you didn’t take the albums off the shelves you would be arrested and your store would be shut down. A big controversy of our generation today is concerning of a topic that many of us praise and could not live without. In fact, spin.com claims that the average American listens to four hours of music each day. So is music effective or hurtful to our studying? This may be an eternal topic for we don’t truly have one answer. In numerous ways listening to music is beneficial, belie some studies have come to find out it can also be harmful. Students should be given the option to listen to music in class, but whether they choose to take upon this privilege or not is up to them.
The lyrics include several multiple rhetorical questions to apply effect or place emphasis on being a monster. Though the speaker does not expect an answer, he asks these questions to create a warning or sense that he inhabits a different life, and that he does not live by society usual standards. For example, he asks the questions, “If I told you what I was / Would you turn your back on me?” and “Would you be scared?” He wonders that if society or the audience, discovers the real him or sees his flaws, would they turn against him, fear him, or shun him away. Some people think that music can positively influence the listener while others disagree and argue that it has a negative impact. Mark Edmundson, the author of “Can Music Save Your Life?,” asserts through his own experience and the research of others that music solely “preserves” the listener’s life as a “balm—cortisone spread” (paragraph 25).
