Jiennie Cruz Mrs. Misselhorn 7th Hour Language Arts 29 March 2017 Should kids have a summer break or have year round schooling? I think that that students should have summer break because of the complications it brings with having a year-round schooling. The first reason why kids should have a summer break is that it makes school less complicated. According to Jennifer Brozak, a disadvantage of having a year round school is that the school budget has to increase. They will need to have more fundraisers in order to keep the school going. If they neglect to get the amount of money they need they sometimes cancel and let the students have a summer break. In addition, teachers are having difficulty with planning lessons for students and grading papers in a short amount of time they have (Brozak). In addition, Brozak says, because of the short amount of time teachers have to grade papers they are prone to burnout. This is one of the reasons that schools should have a summer break because both teachers and students’ mental pressure because of work (Brozak). As a student, I can say that breaks will be necessary to recharge and prepare myself …show more content…
In the article,” The Pros and Cons of Year-Round School” it states that by taking summer away that this could help the students have more time to understand the material. In addition, they say that by taking summer away it helps students not to forget anything that they learn the year prior. This shows that students could excel more in school if summer breaks were gone. Also in the article, “The Pros and Cons of Year-Round School” states that the summer break given to the students is too long. The students have almost nothing to do. Some do go on vacations, but not a lot do. This shows that this would be the prime opportunity to get rid of summer, and do a year round school. Sure people believe that this should happen, but is that really the right way to go
In the article, “How Much Does Stress Affect Learning by , it says , “Stress…negatively affects the way children pay attention in class, stay on task, and are able to move from one activity to another.” This stress that students deal with is not a good thing and it can also cause teachers to become stressed. The short breaks that come with a year-round school year allows students to get rid of this stress, and relax. In the article, “Year-round schooling:An overview” it states, “teachers and students experience less stress and burnout during year-round schedule because of the multiple short breaks available throughout the year.” This reveals the fact that year-round schooling can decrease the level of stress a teacher or student has opposed to the basic school year. The short breaks that come with a year-round school year allows students to get rid of this stress, and relax. It also gets rid of the mental problems that come with the stress.
Why is a year-round school a bad idea? Having a summer vacation gives students motivation throughout the school year. It is a bad idea to make our winter break longer than summer break because some students work over the summer, students are not getting the best education they could, and they will not have much time to spend with their family.
As a student, having more frequent breaks could benefit students and teachers. “Although cumulatively there would be fewer days of, the frequency of school breaks would be much higher” (Top 10 Reasons). Normal schools have a summer break, two other breaks, and an assortment of different holidays (Top 10 Reasons). Additionally, if kids go to year-round school, which have more frequent breaks, they could have less stress.
As a student, this issue affects me immensely as I experience the results firsthand. From personal experience, I can say that year-round schooling is much better because after every summer, my peers and I tend to forget most of what we’ve learned, causing teachers to spend valuable teaching time to review with us. I also believe that during the many days that we have summer vacation; we could learn a lot more. Although many people view summer vacation as a time to spend valuable time with family, from
possible con to a year-round school calendar is the lack of time for recreational summer activities
Most importantly, students' education and health would benefit. Year-round schooling would allow students to move at their own pace. Students would also be able to retain information more easily because they won't have to remember what they learned over the long summer breaks. Lastly, a students' brain won't have nearly as much strain because students would be learning in a more structured schedule.
The pros of the year-long schooling allow students and teachers to still have these long weeks off from from but more frequently, than just one long summer vacation. Though most students would tend to disagree with my standpoint but most college semester run on this year-long school program. Though most college students don't take summer classes and spend their time visiting home or relaxing, classes are still offered. Being in school requires a routine of waking up early, study habits, and remembering information. Thus, it's been proven that it take three to start a new habit or break a bad one. In addition to this fact taking shorter breaks throughout the year keeps the student and teachers in these routines. Also, the first few weeks of school are where money is actually
Schools should have year round school . Picture that when you pull your kid out of school and they lose more information than a long break. There are shorter breaks in the summer and holidays which means more breaks. If you have school year round it is easier to plan a family trip. Also if you go for a longer time period you have a longer break.
Besides, studies have shown that kids lose knowledge that they just learned from the previous year during the summer. For example, on paragraph 7, in the article “Vacation Just as Important as School” it said that, “The gist is that in summer kids forget whatever they just have learned.” Proving that kids need year round schooling so the information they learned can stay with them for the following years. Also, in the article “A Lesson in the Value of Summer”, paragraph 19, they said that, “Increasing summer school may be a good educational policy for raising standardized test scores.” Making a point that having education year round will make sure you grades stay up.
“Removing any sort of a long break from school can improve a child's academic achievement,” The Pros and Cons of year round school stated. If we took away break, then we would be more like a genius and more people could go to college and get better jobs. People might not fail as much. Kids would be able to get more scholarships. We would remember all of the things in school and be smarter the next year. Kids would not be held back or have to go to summer school. It would help the family because they might not have to pay for college and summer school. Kids could work better in groups because they would be with those people during the year much longer than
Cons to Year Round Education: - Multitrack year-round calendars eliminate the idea of a single class using a single classroom. More storage space is usually required for students and teachers. - Multitrack year-round calendars place additional demands on school support staff and on cafeteria, custodial and maintenance services. - Special accommodations must be made for annual school events like graduation and parent conferences. - Teachers who traditionally continue their own education during the summer break need to find alternative forms of education and training. - Working parents may find it harder to find childcare for shorter breaks during the year than for the long summer break, when summer camp and other full-time activities are available. - Families with children in different schools or districts may be faced with conflicting school break schedules. Year round school is a great idea because it lets teachers teach what they need to for that year with out having to review for have the year. If students went all year for school and only had breaks for holidays then they would be less likely to forget their school work and would have higher test scores. While this may cost more money would it truly matter if once the students get out of school they would have better chances of getting jobs with the higher test scores they have. during the holiday breaks the students have this will also be the teachers breaks. Spring break lets the students and teachers unwind and get ready for the next half of the school year. With only going ten months a year students and teachers tend to not look forward
In my opinion year round schools is a bad idea. It is a bad idea because of many different reasons. Some of the reasons are less time to prep for a test.Family vacation over the summer would aslo not be able to happen.Year rounds schools burn out teachers. Year round schools are a terrible decision.
Have you ever thought about what school would be like without the long awaited summer break that comes with the end of each school year? If so, you might be thinking, what would I do with the extra time? Or how would we ever get a chance for a vacation? Is it going to be too overwhelming for my child? But the biggest factor of all, how would the children take this news? It is a great debate amongst many parents and school districts right now. Should we keep the traditional education methods? Or should society as a whole put this to the past and try a new approach to the way we educate our children: Year-round schooling.
Some people argue that summer break is too long so there should be year round schools. A summer break after the school year helps out students by relieving stress, and setting new goals.
