The Problem with Cell Phones in Today's Society

Over the past decade, we have integrated technology into many parts of out lives. We use our cell phones for everything from finding directions, to taking pictures of moments you do not want to forget. Everywhere you go, you cell phone goes with you, if you forget it at home, somehow we feel naked without it. Cell phones have become so powerful and useful for so many things other than just making phone calls; I do not even know why we still call them phones. With that, we have the right to feel secure and free from unwarranted searches though our cell phones and electronic devices.

In the world today, cell phones are being used more than ever before. Everywhere you go, cell phones are present, and its users range from almost all ages. There is no avoiding the fact that cell phones are a prominent way of communication. They have become so influential in peoples’ everyday lives that many can not imagine life without a cell phone. Cell phones are not necessarily a bad tool, when used in moderation. Cell phones are changing the way people communicate and the way they live their everyday lives.

With technology, the way we communicate has changed over the past year with our smart phones we can surf the internet, check our social media accounts, use GPS, and text and call our families and friends. The cell phones have made a significant impact on the social life of people. It helps us to communicate and stay connected around the world. People use their cell phones for nearly everything from cameras, alarm clock, radio, social networks and access to Internet to mobile money transactions.

There is a new and more powerful drug that is plaguing our nation and the sad thing, is everyone in our nation is addicted to this deadly drug, the cell phone.

How are cell phones affecting today’s people when they are such a large part of everyday life? Three separate articles discuss their opinion on cell phones and what’s being done about them. Cell phones are bad for today’s people because they are distracting, they are having a negative impact on people’s wellbeing, and are even becoming a safety hazard.

Overdependence on phones is built on an important understanding of addiction and the relative effects of addictive characteristics. Just as compared to the TV in the late 1960s and also the internet at end of 1990, mobile phone technologies are the defining technologies of the 21st century. Cell phones are having a major impact on people and the society in several ways including privacy issues, time use and the ability to constantly access those (Junco et al., 2010).

In today's society there have been numerous advancements to help us in our everyday lives. One of this advancement is cell-phones, which is one of the greatest development in technology. We have become dependent on mobiles phones and it seem like a high percentage of the population including elderly people, young adult and even kids under 18 have one of this devices. Cellular devices have evolved through the ages. The world twenty years ago simply had home phones in every household and a telephone booth at every street corner. The developing technology of cell phones has created a society in which nearly everyone today possesses their own individual phone. People may ask, is this rapid change creating a positive or negative impact on our society? Most Americans would respond quickly by saying “positive.” This is correct to a certain degree. Cell phones enhance communication and extend our connections. However, today’s research proves these ideas to be wrong, when overused. The use of cell phones can be a positive thing if they are used in the proper way, but sadly addiction is overflowing in the United States, causing us to have downfalls in face-to-face interaction, deaths in automobiles, and making us physically and mentally ill.

Thanks to the "father of the cell phone" Martin Cooper, over 90% of people, just in the United States, possess his creation in their pockets ("Mobile Technology Fact Sheet"). Little did he know that these complex devices could grow to their current demand and start to pose a danger to society. Cell phones are a detrimental technology that is disrupting our way of life.

Cell phones could be both good and bad. Some people say that cell phones are dangerous. While, other people would argue that cell phones are a great invention. With every invention comes positives and negatives. Some of the advantages that cell phones provide is that testing is a fast and easy way of communication, texting and have social media all on your phone can always keep you updated and social with your friends, and people always have all of their personal information at one touch and carries it with them everywhere. Then, there are the disadvantages of cell phones which include texting at the wrong times such as driving is highly dangerous, while you are social and updated with friends through texting it can diminish your communication skills when it comes to talking in person, and also if you have all of your information on your phone and it gets lost of stolen then somebody knows everything that is on there. In the duration of this paper there will be a comparing of both the negatives and the positives of cell phones and their capabilities.

The modern day cell phone has evolved throughout the last twenty years and has revolutionized the way society operates. It was once a cumbersome, bulky box with an equally heavy antennae attached. However, as time passed modern advancement produced an incredible technological achievement with multiple functions that expand upon its general concept. Modern cell phones contain the processing power and storage capability that would rival the most advanced desktop computers ten years ago while also progressing the realm of communication with its unique platform. Being able to send and receive messages instantly while also simplifying societal interactions has become an intricate piece to modern culture. This communication technology has also modified people’s interactions with the world and their perception of reality. However, with its vast technological achievements, problems and issues have appeared within our society.

A question of my interest is are individuals becoming more attached to their cell phone? Cellphones in the past were more simple, where in the past would serve as a tool to use in case of an emergency, whether if it was to make a phone call if stranded somewhere or simply to make calls to family or friends. Now cell phones have evolved to have a multitude of uses now as they have the internet, different applications to meet the individual’s entertainment/needs (dating apps, school apps, news apps, social media apps, music apps, inspirational quotes apps, and exercise apps to name a few, and the list goes on), navigation, photo storage, and camera. Therefore, a person is always connected to social life and the world. What people use to only do from a laptop, is no longer the case. Cell phones, for the most part, have taken over laptops, computers, watching the news on TV/reading the newspaper, etc. It seems that cell phones are becoming more of a commodity, where individuals today, cannot seem to live without.
