2. Principle two – Overcoming FEAR
Our second principle for better self-empowerment is the overcoming of fear in general. Fear is a part of our lives. It appears when we are uncertain or faced with something new. It is natural to feel this way, but it can become a problem when it rules our every decision. If for instance, the fear of failing a job interview keeps you indoors and miserable, then there’s a serious problem here. So, what is fear? Well, fear can be described as an uncomfortable emotion caused by the strong impression that a person or an object is harmful, capable of causing pain, or a poses threat. In other words, the fear of something or somebody is something that can easily threaten your wellbeing.
It’s one thing to be scared of something new, or scared because you feel you’re being threatened, but it is a problem if you use fear to make excuses for your failures in life. For instance, you have people saying “huh, I don’t want to go and work overseas because I’m scared of people who don’t speak the same language as me”. And people like that almost never get out of the country. They spend their holidays here in the states as well as their honeymoon and would rather let their fear dictate their conduct. One may think that this type of fear may be justified with all the insecurity happening all over the world and that we shouldn’t blame people who think like that. In our world fear roams everywhere. In our streets, businesses, schools, and homes. Fear has caused wars, and treaties. Fear can cause people to start something amazing or horrific. People can change because of fear of a thing.
Fear is one of the most basic and vital aspects of human behavior. To our ancestors, it was often the only thing that kept them alive, but today, with less and less things in the natural world people have to be afraid of, it usually just keeps them from working towards their goals. Fear can prevent one from pursuing their dream in that it forces us to be afraid of the future and can act as a catalyst for people giving up.
One of the things we fear the most is the loss of or lack of control. Even if we really don’t have control, we like to think we do, and when we lose that sense of control, fear rushes in. For example, an alcoholic will say " I can quit any time; I’m in control." The fear comes when he realizes for the first time that he is an alcoholic and that he is not in control. We all fear uncertainty and the unknown. We arm ourselves against it with candles in the dark, or faith against the uncertainty of death. Then, when we think we’ve conquered our fear, it comes invading our minds again, let in by a smell or a taste, a sound or a thought Fear is always there, just waiting right under the surface, to awaken those memories which frighten us the most.

Have you ever been intimidated by fear? Fear is in our everyday lives. We tend to let fear control us and how we live our lives. The idea of fear is a fairly simple concept, yet it carries the power to consume and control lives. Fear can cause our thinking processes to be distorted and irrational. It may create negative anticipation of things to come. It could cause excessive worrying of what others think or a fear of God’s wrath (Nichols, 2010). Fear sometimes makes the emotions of the individual get out of control with anger, anxiety, depression, and worrying (Nichols, 2010). In the book, all of these emotions are addressed and insight is given to help overcome them. It is important to do the necessary hard work to untie these knots in order to bring a person back to a healthy emotional state of mind. Another cause for people having fear is the past experiences they have had. Generally, if something bad has happened to somebody, they try to forget about it and/or they try to make sure it never happens again. However, in doing so, they still have a subconscious fear that something similar to the terrible event they’ve experienced may somehow manage to happen again, especially if there are a few similarities between the past event and the current situation. For example, if a man had surgery for his heart to perform better and he nearly died, he may be very reluctant to ever have surgery to his heart or any other body part(s) again.

But the fear of limiting your true human potential is a fear that many of us are disinclined to connect with, as it requires us to own our emotions and dig deep for the underlying reasons that hold us back from our success.
Fear is the number one obstacle everyone must overcome at some point in their life. When the word fear is brought up I like to think of past situations that I experienced. There are many different methods used to conquer and learn from our fears such and exposure therapy, having a growth mindset, and thinking positive. For example, when I was younger fear was my worst enemy, School was the main reason that caused my fear. My fear of failure was my biggest obstacle growing up so I used that as a method to learn from my fears.
There is an important event that happens in every person’s life. That important event may be a number of things. Such as someone winning the lottery or even having a tragic loss in the family. My important event in life was the day I conquered my fear of heights. Everyone has some type of fear or phobia that absolutely petrifies them. Whether it’s a fear of snakes, swimming, or even germs, it can be conquered as I discovered.
