The Outsiders: A Short Summery Protagonist The protagonist of a story is the main character who traditionally undergoes some sort of change. Pony Curtis is the teenage narrator and protagonist of the novel. When his parents were killed in a car accident, Darry, his twenty-year-old brother, began to provide for him. He resents Darry’s bullying manner, not realizing that he does so because he loves him and wants him to make something of himself. Pony belongs to an eastside gang of poor teenagers, called the Greasers; their rivals are the Socs, the rich kids living on the west side of town. Antagonist The antagonist of a story is the force that provides an obstacle for the protagonist. The antagonist does not always have to be a single character or even a character at all. Pony’s antagonist is his status in life. Poor and from the wrong side of town, he gets no breaks in life, even though he is a good student and studies hard. He joins the Greasers because it is the thing to do if you live on the east side of town. Their rivals are the Socs, a gang of rich, spoiled kids living on the west side of town. The Socs constantly pick fights with the Greasers, and Bob, one of the Socs, attacks Johnny and Pony because they have been friendly with Cherry. Johnny kills Bob in self-defense, and he and Pony go into hiding in a church in Windrixville. When the church catches on fire, Johnny and Pony try to save the children trapped inside. Johnny is serious injured during the rescue and
The Outsiders movie which was released on March 25, 1983, is a American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola .It is a crime thriller and is adapted from a novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton .The Film was shot on location in Tulsa, Oklahoma and set in 1965 .The story of this movie revolves around the conflict between the two different social groups ,which is the rich and the poor. It is a class versus class conflict which gives rise to a physical conflict between the Greasers and the Socs .I feel there are physical fights throughout the story between the two groups due to enculturation. The native culture that is transmitted from one generation to another among the Greasers is the reason for their limitations.
The title of the story is The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton wrote it. Dell Publishing published the book. The main characters include Ponyboy, Darry, Soadapop, Dally Winston, Johnny, Cherry, Two-Bit, and Marcia.
Have you ever been part of a social group? Did you ever feel like an outsider? The book The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960’s. This book is about two teenage groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both the Socs and the Greasers sometimes felt like outsiders. But which group was the real outsiders? Or, are the outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? I believe that the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups.
protagonists and antagonists, the plot structure and events of the story and the way he
In the novel The Outsiders, the author S.E Hinton explains the story of a young boy named Ponyboy and the struggle to survive, to find out the rights and wrongs in society, taking on difficult challenges like social class, loved ones, loyalty and rivalry between two different social classes . The question is brought up, is the American Dream fact ? Or fiction ? According to the knowledge that has been given, Through documentaries, articles and a novel. The American Dream is what you could describe as an allusion. The American dream “is a theory that every U.S citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work and
Last but not least, Ponyboy faces the society’s impression of the greasers. Everybody thinks that they are hoods and that nothing good can come out of them. The greasers are judged strongly because of their economic status and face judgment from everyone. Nobody cares to understand their life and what experience on a daily basis. He also finds out when he was in Windrixville, that people don’t judge them like they do in their city. The whole conflict of the story is the Greasers and the Socs. The characters in the story have gone about their own ways to at least try to fix the problem. Many chose fighting and violence in general, but Ponyboy choose to write a book for a writing assignment. He discovers that there is no difference between them
The Outsiders, made in 1983, is based on the original book made in 1967, The Outsiders. The movie copied the same plot of the book heavily, as it still portrays the same main character, Ponyboy Curtis (played by Thomas C. Howell), a fourteen year old boy living with his two brothers. This one and a half hour film shows Ponyboy’s life as a greaser, as he experiences the positive and negative sides of his family life style, and questions the benefits of the greaser’s biggest enemy; the Socials.
The story The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, was a popular novel because of how realistic it was. The novel was successful because it included famous people and items from the 1960s. These items allowed for people to read the story and make connections. One of the topics that was referenced in the book was Perry Mason. Perry Mason was a popular television series that made readers understand how Ponyboy viewed the courtroom.
I believe the Outsiders are representation sped up by the greasers like Ponyboy, Dally, Soda, and the others. They are extracted from others and are people that don’t fit in with the crowd. The factor is they are poor and are unnoticed unless they make trouble. These are boys who don’t care they smoke and act like a family. Unlike the other gangs this has no leader and have individual leaders. Like for these examples to use Outsider it needs to be defined. Outsider or an Outsider is a man or woman or group whom doesn’t fit with the rest of the crowd and ends up sticking out like a ball in a haystack it is extractable but easier than the needle. There are many ways to describe this like how in a crowd of people the Socials could spot Ponyboy
He also starts off as The Innocent, hopeful for a better future and seeing the good in everyone. On page 26 he says, “I didn’t get why we talk about girls in that way,’ which is showing how even though he’s tough he is still young and innocent and doesn’t get why his gang talks dirty about women’ Also like Dara, Ponyboy’s archetype changes to The Loner or Outcast and he loses his hope. After Johnny kills a Soc to protect him, they go on the run from the police. They hide out in an abandoned church away from their families and society. On page 63 it says “he must have been as homesick as I was” showing how Ponyboy wants to go back to his family. Again, this also shows the theme of The Outsiders. Even though he’s a greaser and on the bad side of society’s view, Ponyboy is really only an outsider when he is without his family and gang. Following Dara, after Johnny’s death, Ponyboy becomes The Hero. On page 145 the text states “ ‘Yessir,’ I said, ‘I'll try. What's the theme supposed to be on?’ ‘Anything you think is important enough to write about. And it isn't a reference theme; I want your own ideas and your own experiences’.” Ponyboy then writes a theme paper based on Johnny’s life, letting everyone know what they’ve gone through. He has an honorable purpose, allowing him to be The Hero. Ponyboy also faces a great deal of problems, although his are not the same as Dara’s. Like her, he is also driven from his home and placed in an intense war. Unlike her, his war is of the social classes and not countries. While Dara must overcome her fears, Ponyboy must discover who he is as a person and who he wants to
Willie, the antagonist of the story accidentally makes Bobby overcome his fears and stand up to him. In a way Willie could be a protagonist because he helps Bobby overcome his fears. Willie is a crazy person that doesn't know what he is doing.
1. Pony boy Curtis- The narrator of the story. Ponyboy’s love for literature and academics make him different from the rest of the gang. He’s also the youngest. Because his parents died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers. His oldest brother accuses him of lacking common sense but, ponyboy is a reliable and observant character.
In this section, you should to discuss the protagonist (main character) of your novel. In addition to telling me who the protagonist is, provide some details about the protagonist. Consider the following: human or something else, male or female, age, occupation, etc. Then identify two character or personality traits of your protagonist. Explain how/why your character is static or dynamic.
Some people experience emotional journeys in their lives. In S.E. Hinton’s, The Outsiders and in Thanhha Lai’s, Inside Out and Back Again, the major characters experience emotional journeys. Differences between two types of people can lead to serious problems. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the Socs and the Greasers overgo many difficulties with each other leading to bad effects on their lives. Even though the Socs and Greasers may have different ways of living life, they are more alike than they think with stuff like family losses and mourning, and wanting to feel victorious. Even though Socs and Greasers have some things in common they are different in physical abilities and how they cope with emotions.
