Unfortunately, there is not a specific study that shows which percentage of children will be affected by their surroundings whether it be in a positive or negative way. Although, every person is impacted by their environment in some way, either large or small. There are people who choose to change their life, and forget the past, and there are those who live with their childhood upbringing as the center of their life.

Two boys that were born in the same neighborhood in Baltimore, and had a difficult childhood since they both grew up fatherless. The coincidence was that the two boys were called Wes. They both shared a lot of similarities from living in a poor neighborhood and growing up in Baltimore street corners with their squads. However, their futures were completely different as one achieved the impossible and the other was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. People may think that how could this happen since they both were living the same circumstances. However, in the book Wes Moore, the boys did not have equal opportunities in terms of parenting, education, and environment.

The purpose behind this phenomenal novel is to understand the pain and struggle to overcome the streets and how the streets can raise you and change you as a person. Furthermore, allowing you to foreshadow your thoughts of how your environment and experience can shape who you become. The environment we live in does play a significant role in our growth in life. Nature and nurture can effect individual success in different aspects. In the novel The Other Wes Moore the author Wes uses narrative elements such as parallelism and characterization to describe and tell both Wes's stories.

The autobiography The Other Wes Moore was written by a man who was comparing the lives of two men, the author himself and another man who, coincidentally, had the same name. In an attempt to eliminate any confusion, I need to clarify to which Wes Moore I am referring, so, I will refer to the author as Wes 1 and the other Wes Moore will be referred to as Wes 2. It took me a few minutes to decide what to call them since my initial reaction was to say Good Wes and Bad Wes. However, if this course on cultural competence has taught me anything, it’s to not label people. I see now that these two men lived their lives making the best decisions they felt they could have made at the time, and I realize that terms such as “good” or “bad” are misleading and disrespectful. The similarities between the two are obvious from the start; both men are black, both were raised in Maryland, both had to grow up without the presence of a father, and both grew up in poverty. By looking at several social issues we can see how different types of support and opportunities made the difference between the paths of these men. I believe that through their family relationships, their environments, and their experiences their attitudes regarding their ethics and values were shaped, which, in turn, defined their choices.

In the book, The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is about two kids with the same name that live two different backgrounds. Wes Moore is the author and tells his story of how successful he became, and the other Wes Moore is the antagonist in the book, which tells how his life went down the wrong path. The book shows the different phases of their lives, which have made them the people they are today. Wes Moore the author states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” I agree with his statement because either one of them could have had bad influences that lead them down the wrong path. Someone who has a positive mindset and career goals, are mostly likely to be successful than those who don’t have a plan for the future. In my opinion, getting an education and making the right decisions in life, will lead to positive outcomes, rather than making poor decisions that leads one to become a criminal.

This creates the conflict or argument of what’s happening in the book. This helps the readers realize that both Wes Moores has experiences life changing events that turned their paths into different directions. The author Wes Moore shows both the point of view of him and the other Wes Moore’s experiences through life. Similarities and differences pertaining to becoming a man and the education of both Moores described in The Other Wes Moore. Education was an important role in the life of both the Wes’s because each of them choose what they wanted to do in life.

Baltimore, Maryland is one of the most dangerous cities in America, with over 41,000 crimes committed annually. Growing up as a kid in Baltimore was very strenuous, often times children grew up around drug activity and had little to no choice, but to follow in their peers footsteps. The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is a good novel that brings you into the lives of two African American children living in Baltimore trying to find their way in a hostile world. Both characters grew up fatherless on street corners around drug activity, however, the rest of their lives are completely different. This novel dives into the life choices of two kids as they grow up learning about themselves. The choices they made determined how they would live the rest of their lives, one of the Wes’s would spend the rest of his life incarcerated while the other grew up to be a the first African American Rhodes Scholar. Although they have similar backgrounds, there are many differences that allowed their lives to diverge.
