Adam Smith born 1723-1790 a Scottish philosopher and Economist. Throughout the Enlightenment, philosophes have made discoveries as well as have ideas that have revolutionized society as we know it today. The Enlightenment took place during the 17th and 18th century in Europe. During this period, philospohes, or philosophers, would discuss different questions and brought new, intellecutal ideas that brought out the Age of Reason. There is many different points of view of what the philosophes main idea was during the enlightenment. The main idea of the philosophes was greater individual freedom. This idea was a key part of their thinking in three areas: government, religion and women's rights.

The Enlightenment was a period in the eighteenth century where change in philosophy and cultural life took place in Europe. The movement started in France, and spread to Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Germany at more or less around the same time, the ideas starting with the most renowned thinkers and philosophers of the time and eventually being shared with the common people. The Enlightenment was a way of thinking that focused on the betterment of humanity by using logic and reason rather than irrationality and superstition. It was a way of thinking that showed skepticism in the face of religion, challenged the inequality between the kings and their people, and tried to establish a sound system of ethics. The Enlightenment era was a new intellectual movement that stressed reason and thought and the power of individuals to solve problems. Even though different philosophers approached their goal differently, they achieved it none the less. They all approached their goal differently due to their different upbringings, their different backgrounds, and most importantly their different environments. A few among the many enlightened thinkers were Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Baron Do Montesquieu, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. While some of their idea’s are not used in modern society, they were all instrumental to the modern society we live in today.

Big ideas are the start of big changes. In the 17th and the 18th century in Western Europe, well-educated philosophers or philisophes came up with ideas to change society and base things off of individual freedom and individual decisions. Philosophers used natural laws and observation to form their ideas and to change society. The philosophers believed that great individual freedom would improve society. This was true in the aspects of political, economic, and gender equality freedom.

The Enlightenment formed off of another movement known as the Scientific Revolution in the seventeenth century. The Scientific Revolution brought about new scientific discoveries especially in Astronomy changing the preconceptions of how the cosmos affect the natural world. These dramatic discoveries made people question the existing political and social orders. The Enlightenment challenged the traditional hierarchical ideals such as a king’s divine right to rule, the privileges of nobility, and the political power of religion. It also inspired the ideals of individual determination, freedom and equality, and the basic principles of human reason and natural rights.

During the Renaissance, people began to stray away from the Catholic Church, and began thinking for themselves. While doing so, people began to reconnect to old Roman traditions. Subsequently, the Enlightenment was born soon after. The Enlightenment was a new way of thinking also known as The Age Of Reason. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes are two famous philosophers of the Enlightenment that are known for having two different views on government.

A city/state works at its finest and most peacefully when the citizens can participate in trade and sharing their religious ideas and thoughts. When their rights are being limited like their freedom of religion, chaos could break. If you limit a city/state to a certain amount of religions that you could be in order to participate in anything the government will not run smoothly as if on the other hand, you let every religion in your city/state the government will run nice and smooth.

In this document, Adam Smith states that people will "[direct] the industry in such a manner as its produce may be of greatest value" and that "he intends only his own gain," (Doc A). Smith believes that people will act on self-gain to benefit themselves. However, this only leads to exploitations of this system when Bourgeoisie abuse the Proletariat's working force. Also, Smith believes that "every individual it is evident, can, in his local situation, judge much better than any statesman or lawgiver can do for him," (Doc A). Despite this, when there was not much government intervention, the Bourgeoisie betrayed us and put us in critically hostile working conditions.

In Europe in the late seventeenth to eighteenth century, The Enlightenment took place. The Enlightenment was a time when people began to question the status quo. Many creative philosophers -who were well educated people- would gather and talk about how things are and how they could be. Topics of discussion included views about the economy or government. Three of the most well known and influential philosophers during this time were John Locke, Voltaire, and Mary Wollstonecraft. John Locke was an English philosopher who thought that the government had too much control. He thought that if the government wasn’t so persistent in people's’ everyday lives, then society would become much better for everyone. Voltaire was a French philosopher

During the Enlightenment period, it was the age of reason. Where people understood and viewed things differently. However, centuries later from that time period (1700s) both America and France incorporated and reflected various enlightenment ideas and formed it into several documents such as the Bill of rights, Declaration of Independence both America and France, and the Constitution. These Enlightenment thinkers believed in our natural rights, our equality, and our freedom of speech, expression, and press. By having a unified government and society America and France decide to incorporate these ideas to change the fighting and all of the revolts and decided to get the freedom everyone deserves, except for women until later on. However, both America and France took bits of pieces of these ideas and slightly changed them. The one who reflected most of these enlightenment ideas was America.

According to Adam Smith’s, The Wealth of Nation, the best economic benefits for all can be achieved when an individual concerned with their own interests. Self-interest is when an individual makes decisions that are in their own benefit or best interest over any other parties involved (Book 1 chapter 2 §2). Smith argues that the idea of individual continuously make decisions that benefits their own situation will eventually lead to achieving better quality of life for everyone. Hence, people wouldn’t have to depend on other to make the decisions for them and encourages division of labour within the society (Book 1 chapter 2 §3). Withal the theory of self-interest is alike with selfish in our words, therefore the following essay explores how these two concepts differ. Nevertheless, Smith is also aware that the theory of self-interest may cause dispute between master and workers, thus he suggests a resolution to this kind of dispute. Accordingly, along with an example of worker’s dispute, this essay evaluates whether the resolution that Smith suggested is feasible in the modern society.

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.” This is a quote from the book Wealth of Nations, which Adam Smith wrote, addresses well about why and what reason people work for. The butcher, the brewer, or the baker does not cut, stir, or bake because they want to please the customer or to feed the poor, but to earn money and for their own happiness. The ideas from the Enlightenment and its thinkers greatly influenced the world today, everything from our ideas of modern government to our view of everyday life. Important Enlightenment philosophes such as Locke, Montesquieu, Hobbes and Voltaire established controversial ideas and theories on human nature, natural rights, and how government should be run and which form of it was superior. These ideas were all never even thought of before, and shattered many of the previous notions of ideas, such as ideas of how to run government, that had already been established and taken as a standard for several hundreds of years.

The 18th century is referred to as the ‘Age of Enlightenment’. The trends in thought and letters from Europe to the American colonies brought a new light and attention upon mankind. This new movement described a time in Western philosophy and cultural life in which reason was advocated as the primary source and legitimacy for authority. ‘To understand the natural world and humankinds place in it solely on the basis of reason and without turning to religious belief was the goal of the wide-ranging intellectual movement’ (Hackett). At the heart o this age, a conflict began between religion and the inquiring mind that wanted to know and understand through reason based on evidence and proof rather than belief on faith alone.
