But, there always wasn't that many in the world as the automobile has only been around since the early 1900s. An automobile, also called a car, is a four wheeled vehicle that has its own motor and is used in daily travels around the world. Even though our world is filled with them now, automobiles were quite rare during the 1910s and 1920s. The automobile began as a rich man’s toy, and in today’s society almost every single person owns one of these miraculous inventions. After the automobile became more popular, society has evolved around it, creating highways and fast food chains. The automobile has revised from a bare invention, such as the horseless carriage, to now technologically advanced motor vehicles with bluetooth and wireless internet. Since the beginning age of the automobile in 1885, the invention has advanced, prospered, and changed society throughout the world.

The document “The Social Influence of the Automobile” was written in June of 1922 by Allen D. Albert. In this article Albert is saying that since the creation of automobiles the life has shifted for the better. “…almost without a pause in our thinking have we adjusted our lives to these factors new since yesterday”1 while automobiles brought a drastic change in life as it was, people adjusted to it quickly. In 1920’s cars were available to the general public at an affordable price, therefor offering the public a better, faster way of getting from place to place. The concept of the automobile was first started in England during Industrial Revolution in the Eighteenth Century. The automobiles were powered by steam engine. Later on, inventors like Henry Ford began thinking further ahead about gasoline engine to produce powerful cars because steam engine cars were not enjoyable because it takes almost ten to twenty minutes to heat up the engine before driving. On June 16, 1903 Henry Ford started the ford motor company (Wikipedia). Almost 500,000 workers were employed in the automobile industry (Nick). Following this many Americans found job opportunities to make their life better in other hand they help the economy and expedite the growth of the country. Soon Ford motor company produced automobiles that were affordable like the Model-T. ”By 1927 the Ford Motor Company had sold over 15.5 million Model Ts in the United States.” (My Life and Work 560). “Nearly half of all American families owned a car in 1929” (561). In the twentieth century, the introduction of the motor vehicle in the United States became not only noteworthy, but also vital in the development of modern American civilization. This technologically complex machine led citizens to vast future dependency on the invention. Throughout the 1800’s, methods of transportation were limited; people either used horses or rode on the train. Most people lived in town near their work. With the introduction of the automobile, society evolved and soon transformed to fit the need of people’s transportation. Many of those needs caused by automobile invention included society, economy and finally, politics.

One significant innovation was the engine that was created in 1712 by Thomas Newcomen. It was, first created to be used in navigation and succeeding to power machinery which revolutionized the world and started the industrial era. The engine acts as a powerhouse making machines move, but needs fuel to keep it running. Mechanical Engineers are assigned to learn the functions of the engine itself and understand how to further improve it by making it reduce the consumption of fuel or to increase the power output. Unlike automobiles, ships and airplanes with their size, still need lots of fuel due to tremendous power needed to be able to move. Cars that run using electricity do not handle gas for fuel, making it eco-friendly, however they do not provide as much power as the cars that run with gas.

The automobiles made a huge impact in United States history. The first car was the electric car and was one of the most popular cars but didn’t have a battery that lasted or could go fast. Then the steam-powered car was built and lasted into the 1920s, but the price was high and there was a risk of the engine exploding, so the car wasn’t very popular. The gas-powered cars became very popular in the 1920s and Ford sold over a million automobiles.

It is hard to credit one single person for the invention of the automobile. There was over 100,000 people who created different versions of the automobile. The person who takes credit for the first is Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, a French military engineer who built the steam-powered tricycle for hauling artillery in 1769. Tricycle means it only had three wheels. The single front wheel performed both wheel functions and steering. It could drive at a speed of 2.25 miles per hour with four passengers within 15 minutes. Henry Ford is also given credit for the first automobile. Henry Ford invented the Model T the Model T changed the way people lived, worked, and traveled the way that Ford made this was through an assembly line. Also the assembly line made the Model T affordable to the majority of America. This way that the average working man could afford the car and not just a wealthy man. There was more the 15 Million Model Ts built in Michigan. The Model T was built from 1908 until 1927. This was made so that it is a affordable transportation for the common man. This became very popular for the very low price, durability, versatility, and easy to maintenance. The use of the assembly line saved the cost from in 1908 of $850 all the was to $300 in 1925. Even before it lost popularity to larger, or more powerful, and more comfortable cars, it was known as “Tin Lizzy” and “flivver.” These had became American folkloric symbol, Ford's goal was to democratize the automobile. The Model T was offered in several different body styles. One of the cars was a two seater runabout car. Another car was a five seater car. The last one was a seven seat town car. All of these bodies were put onto a 100 inch wheelbase chassis. It was usually available to have a color of your choice but from 1913 through 1925 the only color they had manufactured was black. The fuel tank also held ten gallons. If the Model T was driven fast it would be less comfortable because of it rattling. People don't usually get in a car and think wow i wonder how this car was made. They will just go throughout the motion that they always do and think nothing about it. The only time you ever take a look and think about how it was made is when something bad happens.

Karl Benz invented the first automobile in 1866; it has changed the world in how we commute every day. From riding in carriages to now cutting our time travel whether it is riding a bus or our on car. It has become more of a necessity in today's world to have a car because its something that we choose to have in our daily life that it is a choice that is high on the priority list to own. As to wealthier people the type of car you drive puts in a different class. Where some get the choice of car that they want others have a certain budget on what to look for.
