The Dangers of the Internet The internet and social media have come a long way in the past decade. “This is an exciting time to be a young person interested in media” (Jennifer Shewmaker, PhD) Technology has evolved into something that we as humans use every single day. Nowadays children are growing with electronic devices and internet surrounding them. With technology on their hands all day they get exposed too inappropriate content, devolving mental problems and, in some cases being victims of cyberbullying. And yes, there’s no doubt the internet is a useful tool that we use every day for homework and other uses. “But instant messaging, chat room, emails and social networking can also bring trouble – from cyberbullying to more serious internet dangers, including exposure to sexual predators (Katherine Kam, par.3) Too children, who’s brains aren’t well developed they fall to being victims of the to what the internet can cause too their young lives. Many adolescents don’t see the dangers of the internet, but us as adults should prevent introducing the internet too them as such a young age before it’s too late. Lots of inappropriate content is on the internet and social media not meant for children. But with the internet being introduced too them and being all around them, they find things that we as parents don’t want them to see. Many of children click on pages without knowing what it actually is, “Finding inappropriate content can be as easy as clicking on the
Social media has captivated young and adult equally, but young kids are more vulnerable to the negative effects of social media. In the essay writing by Peggy Orenstein, she is troubled by the way young boys and girls are submerged in the cyberspace. She found that places like Facebook or twitter can affect the developing personality of young kids. These kids are more likely to suffer from bulling, to engage in a sexual relationship sooner and with an older person, be the victims of sexual assaults and be self-center. Without being aware of the power of social media, I started using social media since 1996; while I was going to college in the Dominican Republic. I used to go to the computer center during my free time and signed into a
Technology is a double edged weapon, but the negative edge is sharper and cuts the reality into pieces, as the children are building and living their behavior and thoughts with whatever they are exposed to using different kinds of technology. One serious impact is the safety and internet privacy of the children. Pamela DeLoatch in her article “The Four Negative Sides of Technology” added that children may unwittingly share information that may endanger their lives. According to her “82% of online sex crimes against children are made using the social networking sites.” According to their excessive use of technology their lives details are open to everybody which sometimes led to undesired acts. It doesn’t have to be sexual abuse but also it may fracture the children’s self-esteem. Self-esteem shapes the way children think of themselves, if a child is popular in his network his self-esteem will be high, and vies versa. Jim Taylor in his article “how technology is changing the way children think and focus” stated similar opinion when he argued that new technologies are shaping the way our children think, adding that researches came with a conclusion that technology can be both harmful and beneficial to ways in which children think. He also said that it is clear that the advancing technology controls how our brains
Social media itself is a huge danger to society. It causes many suicides within the world because of the cyberbullying and spreading of rumors. “Recent studies have shown that one out of four teens have been the victims of cyberbullying and one out of six have admitted to having cyberbullied someone” (Trautner 1). The internet and social media is supposed to be used to communicate with friends and for searching information, “Kids use technology different than their parents do. Sometimes it is hard for adults to understand that this can even be a possibility” (Trautner 1). It is not supposed to be used to bully someone, especially not to the point where the victim would think about suicide. “One of the statistics that has been highlighted within this news coverage is the threefold increase in the suicide rate for girls ages 10 to 14. The rates for girls in this age group increased from 0.5 to 1.5 per 100,000 during this time period. The increases for boys in this age group were not as high, climbing from 1.9 per 100,000 during 1999 to 2.6 per 100,000 in 2014” (Olsen
Many people view the internet as an ultimate resource for anything they desire. The people who say that the internet is a brilliant invention for the best have reasons backing up their idea. For example, Sherry Turkle writes about such ideas explaining how the internet is an excellent tool for the better in her essay, “Can You Hear Me Now?” Turkle believes strongly that the invention of the internet is an innovation for the better and emphasizes to her readers how important it is in everyone’s lives nowadays. On the other hand, some believe exactly the opposite of Turkle’s invalid inquisition that the internet is a tool that is most definitely not for the greater good. The internet is a
A study done by BMC Public Health showed that children start to show interest toward the Internet during their late years in elementary and middle school. This, therefore, helps spur the idea of teaching children and young adult on how to use the Internet safely and to start teaching at a younger age now. BMC and the British Journal both agree that medical professionals and teachers are not informed enough about the dangers that the Internet holds to be able to help and “treat” the children who struggle with cyberbullying. They believe that every individual should be aware of the issues that are often caused by social media and the Internet so that others can protect themselves and help others before they are blackmailed. Teaching Internet safety is essential with the constantly growing social networks and advancing technology in today’s society where almost everything is computer based and anyone can see
In addition, the social media allows adolescents to gain access to websites anonymously that can provide excellent means of resources for health concerns such as sexually transmitted diseases, depression, stress, and making appointments or communicating with professionals for these types of issues and concerns about them or loved ones. However, there is always a down side to the social media for our adolescents that range in sub groupings such as peer to peer, inappropriate content, privacy violations, and how third parties advertising groups that target our children due to our Like responses on social media. The number one media issue that is brought by parents today’s is cyber bullying or on-line harassment concerns for their children. This was concern by a parent in the PBS video to Mr.
Social media has led many benefits. For example, people are able to spread awareness about mental illness, connect with support groups, and expand searches for research participants. However, users of social media may unknowingly spread false information. Social media also has other drawbacks, which include decreases in-person interactions and increases in cyber-bullying. Children are now have the availability to access a vast amount of information through social media, but the responsibly of having a social media account may be beyond their developmental age abilities. Therefore, the vast increase and interest in social media may lead to researchers investigating human behaviors while noting differences among groups. Additionally, researchers will likely investigate how to assist parents in maintaining appropriate boundaries with social media while remaining safe. From a prevention viewpoint, educating parents and teachers about talking to children about proper use of the internet may be a practical
The article "The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?" written by Cathleen Cleaver is a clear claim of the necessity of government regulation to control what is being shown on the Internet. To support her claim, Cleaver gives the pornographic web sites as an example. She argues that the regulations used to control the selling of pornography applied to porn stores, magazines, and television should also be applied to the Internet. The reason for such necessity is that it is impossible to control who is actually accessing such web sites. Following this reason, Cleaver's main claim in the article is that children can access pornographic web sites on the Internet. This claim is clearly stated by
The internet is one of the world’s most influential platforms. Since the creation of the internet, social media and media itself have made their way into being more and more prominent in the lives of humans, especially in the lives of our youth. According to an article in The Washington Post, “Teens spend nearly nine hours a day consuming media” (Teens Spend Nearly 9 Hours a Day Consuming Media). , which means it is where most of their time is being spent, whether that is in school, at work, or, at home. Although there are many great things that are learned and shared on the internet through all types of media, there are many negative factors shared as well that are just as impactful.
How do we keep our kids safe from predators on the web? With our kids being so involved in computer games,or researching homework they can be exposed to bad websites. You may go to one site and be directed to another site you do not want to see. It is important to teach our kids not to give information to strangers. Harmless conversations can lead to strangers obtaining addresses or where the child attends school. Monitoring activities of our children while on the internet can protect them from harm.
Technology is a big part of everyday life and some would be very lost without it. It helps benefit many in ways as helping store information, creating faster communication, and even as much as running a business. However, among teens, there also seems to be another use of technology such as cyberbullying. The internet has no limitations to what can and can’t be said, also making it easier for these bullies because it requires no face-to-face interaction. PEW Internet Research Center, FOSI, and Cable in the Classroom in 2011 took count of how many teens have experienced this cruel networking behavior and this number came out to 95 percent of social-media teens confirming seeing this type of behavior. Not only is this becoming a part of teens lives, but parents are also becoming more comfortable with this concept. PEW Internet and American Life Survey discovered in 2011 that only 7 percent of parents are worried about cyberbullying, while 33 percent of teens are victims. This hateful and cruel behavior is becoming a part of
“As more children gain access to the internet, online predators bypass while preying on young innocent children.” The internet has become on of the biggest technological advancements of this century. The internet has offered so much and has grown in many ways as far as communication. The internet lets people from all over the world communicate and interact, exchanging information in a millisecond. This has opened a virtual world for everyone around us to live in. With the many different social media websites, chatrooms, and forums all over the internet, it has become difficult to decide who is who. It can be appealing to live your main life and then around every worldwide turn live an opposite life online that compensates for your everyday life. In everyday life you deal with criminals and bad guys, those same people exist in the virtual world too. With the variety of bad people trolling the web the sexual predators are the most dangerous.
Technology has had so many advances in the past decade. People are constantly using the internet for numerous things. Every person uses the internet and technology at least once in their lifetime. Since technology is constantly growing and advancing people find themselves using it more and more for everyday life. Now, adults are usually the ones using the internet, but young kids have found themselves using it more frequently as well. Whether it be a child who is using a phone for games, or a teenager who is using a phone for social media, the internet is always being used. Young kids also find themselves using the internet for several things including social media or texting. With young people using social media there can be a positive side, a negative side, and even changes in ones mind. Young people feed into social media and with this comes cyberbullying, insecurities, distraction, and no privacy.
Kids need to know how dangerous the internet really is before being exposed to it or have spyware installed on their computers, so their parents their parents can help them. One family was shocked when they saw “online messages a predator had posted in a chat room posing as a depressed and lonely 14-year-old girl looking for friends.” (3) The example shows how people can just have a picture of someone else and practically be them and no one will know, and this can be dangerous for the parents and kids. Even if you think someone is real you need confirmation about it so you know for sure. Another said that he “had Googled the word ‘sex’ and my nine-year-old
Imagine that you're on the computer just like every other day. All of a sudden your computer starts popping ads on your screen and it keeps popping and popping. You don't realize what has just happened until you remember that you clicked on an ad which led to a weird website but you just clicked off of it so you didn't think much about it.
