Recycling is presently one of the most controversial topics, considering that while most individuals put across their support regarding the act the number of individuals who actually do something in order to recycle is much smaller. Many people are currently unable or unwilling to recycle properly because the process often requires a series of changes in one's life. We live in a world that has become increasingly conscious of the environment and as a result many have become conscientious of recycling, using natural resources more efficiently and even propagating this in schools. We are not only educated about what, where and how to recycle but also actively participate in the process. Then why does recycling a person’s organs become such a tension and even taboo in some cases?

Recycling has been around for many years along with the idea behind not being wasteful, however it has only recently become popular to take part in. Even with recent growth it has not become popular enough. The solution to overflowing landfills, unemployed Americans, toxins released in the atmosphere, et cetera. It is right before everyone’s eyes but no one seems to see the simple solution: recycling. A mandatory recycling policy would ensure that the environment is being saved for future generations, the soil is suitable for crops, people are employed, and the cash flow that comes with it does not hurt either. With such a simple fix to mass environmental destruction, why is this not already in action?

Recycling is one of the many ways to decrease landfill use. Some people believe we shouldn’t recycle, while other people think we should use it more. Recycling should be practiced more and is more effective because it lowers the amount of chemicals emitted, you get lots of useful recycled materials, and it provides many jobs for people in the United States.

A common sight to a visitor on a beach in the U.S. is garbage that has been pitched by another person or washed up on the beach, after it has been carelessly thrown away. All the carelessly disposed of trash eventually accumulates, rather it be in one place, such as a landfill, or in many places just dispersed and spread out, like litter. In 1997, Captain Charles Moore came across a large trash deposit, while sailing in his boat, Alguita, in the pacific. What he encountered that day could only be described as a floating continent of trash, which today has names such as “trash vortex”, “plastic soup”, and Eastern Garbage Patch”(Friedman 7-10). Fluorescent bulbs emit dangerous gas and mercury into the environment when they break. Dumping these bulbs in the trash or compactor often break these bulbs. In the end, these bulbs reach a landfill or incinerator after thrown into a dumpster. Recycling is the safest and highly recommended method to treat these bulbs instead of throwing into a dumpster. In this way, CFLs will not release any harmful gas or mercury to the environment. Plus, the materials used for making these bulbs can be reused too. The disadvantages about recycling plastics is that it takes money, time, and energy to recycle plastic itself. Recycling plants also use electricity, as much as it recycles it uses up resources and in great quantities because plants are big and are recycling a lot of material. With the rapidly increasing use of plastic, aluminum, and paper materials, it only makes sense that the problem we chose to focus on is recycling. In the world of engineering, recycling has been a hot topic for many years, so for one to say that deriving an idea that hasn’t been done before is difficult, that would be an understatement. As any group of well-educated engineers would, we started our journey at the drawing board. The brainstorming process was potentially the most time consuming section of our task, given we easily spent over fifteen hours spouting off ideas and concepts for anything that we thought we could do that we could patent. We then realized it wasn’t just about us getting a patented idea, it was about making a difference. So, we then realized something that could make a difference is one of the things that we have been taught the importance of since we were in elementary school. That was recycling.

The first earth day was established in the 1970s and that marked the day when recycling went into effect. In the year 1919 recycling became an everyday routine. They just thought they were reusing products because things were scarce. After 1950 the American Can Company formed America Recycles Day is a national initiative of “Keep America Beautiful”. That program was the back bone for how people are recycling today. Recycling is a complicated topic from the process, benefits, and programs in place.

Public garbage cans, waste management vehicles and even several businesses all promote the need for recycling. These things should serve as a constant reminder to us of the importance of recycling. Consumers produce a large scale of garbage (ARTICLE 1) the average American discards seven and a half pounds of garbage every day. The waste produced by Americans goes to landfills and dumps. Landfills are growing quickly, which are affecting our environment as well as our resources. This is where recycling materials such as plastic, paper, glass, etc., play a huge role in conserving our resources. If Americans take an active role in recycling, we can work to reduce the amount of garbage currently in our landfills and dumbs. Recycling has become more of a responsibility rather than a way to save money. It can help clean and protect our environment for each other and generations ahead. I remember my first semester here at the University and the dark halls of the Bates House Residence Hall. Many a party was concluded with an idea for what to do with the endless piles of cans that had congregated on the floor. A few months ago, when I was in Montreal, I was surprised to see that in some grocery stores plastics bags were sold. It is something new because two years ago when I lived in this city, they were free. Now, people need to bring their own reusable bags or buy a plastic bag for 20 cents. Banning grocery plastics bags in Montreal is the city plan as well as some cities in the United States already doing. The aim of this new recycling program is to protect the environment. I believe that recycling is not always effective in some aspects, but it is still the first step that people can do to fight earth’s contamination.

No matter what you do in this life you will always contribute in someway to producing trash. While you may not think so everything you do will produce some type of waste. While recording my trash that I have accumulated these fast three weeks I have noticed a trend. The trend is that every day that I drive to school I end up buying some type of food while I am at school. Most of this trash consisted of paper based products, which can be recycled but in most of the establishments do not have a recycling option because most of the things that can be recycled are covered in food waste so they are viewed as trash. During the weekends I work from sun up to sun down so I can produce a lot of waste in that time frame. Some examples of this are rotors from a truck to shingles from a roof and while each rotor does not take up a lot of space there is a lot of material that will not be broken down. The shingles while they do not weigh that much there is a lot of them and can accumulate quickly. With these shingle you have things such as tarpaper, nails, and staples that will all be thrown away because they cannot be reused. It would be so encumber some to try and collect all of these nails and staples it would increase the length of the job by at least a couple hours. The shingles cannot be reused for any purpose so the only thing to do with them is to take them to the dump.
