In sociology we learn about our society and our behaviors. The three questions I will be going over are different but they all intertwine with each other. They are culture, punishment, and technology. My culture is not the same as yours and I will talk about why that is important. People get punished based on their actions and what punishment is deserved is based on the crime. Now as we go through our life we see what is going on in the world in an instant. This is because technology continues to evolve. We no longer have to wait to get the newspaper when the internet provides the same news but faster.
.
Cultures around the world are changing at an increasingly rapid pace. This is caused by “transmission from one generation to the next, but also evolves through processes of innovation, discovery and cultural diffusion” (Sociology 67). As people are able to travel the world they can experience different cultures. Experiencing different cultures opens people up to new opportunities. An example would be a lady travelling to Asia and falling in love with a dish. She then gets the recipe and opens up a restaurant in her city with that dish. People in her city love it and has a successful business. This lady changed the culture in her city by exposing them to a foreign dish. Now there’s also cultural groups that change through contact with other cultures. When a cultural group changes is caused by diffusion. Diffusion is when there is a “spread of material and nonmaterial culture”
Sociology is all about society and how we as humans interact with one another in our environment. Every person is different, and every person comes from different backgrounds, and the different environments and the different ways people are raised pretty much determines how their life will turn out. Social forces that have shaped my life are family, education, gender, and the media,
Sociology is the study of how social forces influence individuals living within a society. Any society is made of norms, values and beliefs that have the effect of constraining individuals’ thoughts and behaviors. Through understanding and sociological imagination, individuals can remove or at least lessen the social forces’ impacts that are causing the constraints.
Before commencing a discussion on analyzing the article “What makes sociology a different discipline” from the other sciences we should have the know-how about sociology. In the words of modern thinkers of sociology namely Karl Marx, Max Weber and Emile Durkheim “Social fact should be the subject matter for the study of social life and can provide explanations for human thinking and behavior (p19)”. What we infer from the above definition is that man is born as a social animal. Man cannot live alone. He prefers to live in groups and his behavior that is actions and deeds are well governed and regulated by certain rules and laws of conduct that comprises of moral ethics and civic standards. His standard of living is said to be within the
The history of how society came about is very old but short, only emerging during the 19th century. Therefore, it is one of the youngest as well as one of the oldest of the social sciences. According to the American Sociological Association sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. In comparison to other majors, sociology has a broad scope with relevance to research, theory, and application of knowledge. Sociology provides many distinctive perspectives on the world, generating new ideas and critiquing the old. Because sociology addresses the most
After reviewing the article titles given for this first assignment, I believe they indicate that Sociology, generally speaking, is not only a study of diversity or commonality in traits among people; it is also a science about factors in a person’s life and how these factors culminate responses. Interestingly enough, its topics of concern seem to be directly determined by current and common events of the world. Through the invention and expansion of new ideas, popular trends and fashions through time, Sociology adapts to responsibly to service the very subjects of interest it studies; for, even the slightest change of a person’s daily experience can have an insurmountable impact on attitude, personal growth, family
The use of research in the field of sociology has led to many breakthroughs in us as humans understanding both ourselves and our culture around us. As we as society continue working to develop a better understanding of how and why we act and interact with our surroundings we need to continue completing research to answer these questions. Research in sociology has created a better understanding of society and will continue to provide clues into the human mind. However, research must be completed properly and ethically along with proper research methods. Without proper procedures of completing research we as society may receive wrong information or biased answers about questions we want answered. There are four types of research that sociology uses to give us answers about our society and careful consideration must be taken to follow the rules of these research types.
Sociology is the study of groups and individuals and the cause and effects of each, to each other, and overall society. ‘Sociology is a technical and difficult subject and that its value to public discussion lies in this very complexity and difficulty (2005:407-408)’ (Braham 2013:125), it is due to this that the definition of sociology between academics is not definitively defined, as each view sociology and society as various different things. As (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [online]) states, Sociology is diverse, and under the subject lies and micro and macro topics, which range from culture and race to crime or social issues. It is through this, however, that we are able to understand societies and individuals, especially when character is called into question, as it enables sociologists to analyze their personal lives, and their lives in society to completely be able to judge them and their behavior. This is increasingly important among criminals, as we are able to retrieve information surrounding them that would not have been evident when simply studying the crime. This is further supported by the view by (Mills, 2000:7) who
All of this relates to sociology in many ways. One of the main ways it relates is because you see how something so looked down upon in one culture can be so socially acceptable in another culture. When somebody is accused and prosecuted for rape in America they are put in jail for a long time, and receive consequences for their actions. If you go to say Sierra-Leone, or Cambodia the person accused of rape will almost 100% of the time walk away with no consequences.
The earlier historical settings gave an opportunity to the Europeans to visit the primitive cultures of the world. As time progress the settling of the Europeans in different areas provided an accumulated firsthand knowledge which defined the means for existence for human beings. By looking around us we can observe the later stages on cultures that are as a result of the process that was initiated at the late age of colonization and exploration. The culture of the people has spontaneously been affected by this occurring changes thus causing cultural readjustment that has significantly contributed to transformation and new ways of social interaction. When cultures interact, then there has to be cultural exchanges that are experienced.
It also promotes unity when people appreciate each other’s cultures. Cultural leveling is the process of interaction between cultures in the process of travelling and communicating. It is most seen in dominant cultures such as the Americans and British who love to tour the world hence displaying their cultures to new people. Cultural diffusion is when cultures are learned or adopted from other groups while cultural leveling is when cultures become the same. They are similar in that there is interaction of different groups in both cases. An example of cultural diffusion today takes place when people are exposed to foreign cultures. It occurs when students are offered scholarships to study in other countries where they learn new ways of living and adopt them. Another example of cultural diffusion is how basketball is now a huge part of the Japanese culture. Cultural leveling on the other hand has been extended through social media, televisions and radios. For example ways of dressing for various cultures has been leveled through influence of social media. Choice of music has also been made uniform when radio stations play common songs to different cultures. Cultural leveling is the process of cultures becoming very similar to each other. For example, McDonalds can be seen all over Europe and US has adopted a lot of European fashion and even music. What about Mickey Mouse and Flintstones? They are very popular in
At the beginning of the semester, I knew very little about sociology or even what it was about. I just knew I needed to take the class for my degree plan to transfer to a four-year university and that I would be doing a lot of reading about different terms and theories of society. However, this first month of class has helped me improve my understanding of what sociology is about and shown me how my personal society has impacted the way I view society. Not only did I learn about the relationships between society and myself, but I have also learned different concepts that have helped me gain a better understanding of how society works. There are three specific sociological concepts that has helped me improve my understanding of the relation
Sociology is the study of the social lives of human beings and how humans live culturally and socially develop relationships. It is crucial to understand the society that humans live in and a series of social behavior that humans undergo. The three major ways you could view sociology, Structural Functionalism, Conflict theory, and Symbolic Interaction. Not everyone will have the same sociological perspective because the different perspectives are truly based on what you believe this world runs on.
The main origin of sociology was the industrial revolution. Many people had to move to cities in search of work. Many were greeted with horrible working conditions. As mentioned in Essentials of Sociology, jobs were dangerous, people had low pay, and had to work long hours. Families were starving and kids had to work with their parents, who were basically treated like any other adult. Technology that had led to the industrial revolution was the steam engine. This caused a shift in the organization and daily functioning of the people in Europe (Henslin, p.5).
With this we could say the problems have been taken care of with the science and different family’s that live in different states and communities. The consumer society and different media that has an influence in our global society. We all know with today’s social global society that the industry’s along with leisure activities and events that we are impacted with technical and technology. With the technology this includes the acclamation of social mobility. Sociology forms different countries and cities with different cultures and migration My understanding that sociology clams to be scientific and its objective explain the description and perdition of making different suggestions for modifications. The modification is part of the social phenomena that has an effect on the normal development with our global society
Another possibility is the integration of different cultures, which is a diversified phenomenon by participating fully into the dominant society that may lead to some shared values and features, while keeping their own distinctive cultures (Berry,
