The Ever-Changing Penny

As can be seen, the American penny has been around for centuries. Who’s to say that phasing out this coin won't affect America? To dig even deeper, Story describes how the penny has affected the U.S. “ The history of the penny reveals more than just a coin-it exposes a piece of American culture. The one-cent piece has influenced our languages…” (Story). As noted, the penny has not only shaped America's culture, but the language too. Taking away the penny will tear a piece of American identity. To conclude, the penny should remain a part of U.S. economy because of its influence in American language and culture.

Gore, a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley has made a calculation that approximately “four hours per person per year” is wasted on rummaging for pennies which in turn costs the nation “over $15 billion per year.” (Kahn) These $15 billion could be used to create jobs, invest in renewable energy, or invest in education, all of which would greatly improve the nation while at the same time getting rid of a pointless coin.

A third reason why the penny should be abolished is because it is a time waster. When making a purchase and an annoying penny is needed, precious seconds are wasted digging in pockets or purses. The pennies production cost is worth more than the penny itself, It would cost less to just eliminate the penny completely. Pennies cost everybody money, including taxpayers. The penny should be eliminated because it cost about 2 cents to makes. That’s double its value. The penny may cost more to make then it is worth but the nickel does too. So if we are only banning the penny for how much it cost to make then we should ban the nickel too.
