Welcome to our World - where there are continuous debates on whether guns are beneficial to society or deleterious. As generations come and go, more concerns come about on how people will be able to live safe lives as guns keep increasing in their number. Guns being used by officers to protect the innocent, by criminals to commit mass shooting, or by the average individual who use it for their personal protection, guns cause violence in some sense of the word. When the topic of guns are brought up, the subject becomes very polarizing, there are those who defend gun rights to death and those that wish to abolish guns altogether. Reasons why I fall onto the side of guns causing more violence than safety are the stories of mass shootings, …show more content…
This is not the only instance either, in Paris January 7,2015, a magazine company Charlie Hebdo prints pictures of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, this is strictly forbidden in their religion. These pictures portray Muhammad in many different vulgar scenarios causing great unrest in the muslim community. Masked gunmen appeared at the scene with AK-47s and killed 12 people, 2 police officers, the editor, and nine staff members (VINOGRAD 1.) These individuals showed expertise with their weapons and had planned attack on this building, again gun use shows numerous people dying at the hands of other individuals who had access to guns. Weather or not these guns were obtained legally or if these people should have had them does not excuse the fact that these individuals obtained these guns and committed horrendous acts with them. And no matter who had a gun to stop these people, those individuals were not in the defence of the victims at the time. An argument brought up for many gun activists is that we need guns to protect ourselves from other people with guns, the good need to stop the bad but yet we allow the bad to have weapons anyway.
When it comes to the argument to uphold gun rights, advocates state that if individuals learned how to use guns they would be able to stop wrong doers. Such as the case of Charles Augusto, a New York resident who was faced with four robbers entering his place of business threatening him and his employees with a pistol.
A shooting here; a shooting there; an every day occurrence heard in the newspapers and on the news channels on television. New media are reporting a shooting somewhere. Whether the shootings are accidental or intentional; they are happening across the United States. Nevertheless, in today’s society, gun violence is sparking debate and controversy on how to control gun violence. Throughout the country, thousands of laws and regulations have been created to aid in the control of guns. Through much study, the gun laws and regulations in place have very little effect on the number of gun related injuries and deaths. More needs to be done to establish an effective way to control gun violence.
With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
People who appreciate activities like shooting competitions and hunting, use firearms responsibly. This use contrasts with other uses, which often result in consequences that can be both intended and unintended. With past and present mass shootings, and acts of bloodshed perpetrated with the usage of weapons; has triggered a focus on gun control that once again has been brought into the spotlight. The purpose of the ongoing gun argument addresses the crimes that are committed with guns. This issue of gun control separated people into two groups: those who believe that carrying guns might prevent some crimes and fatalities, and those who don’t. There are individuals who believe absolutely the reverse: that more crime and deaths
What cause crime? Is is an individual’s access to firearms or is it their willingness to act illegally given the opportunity? In this argumentative essay I will be discussing one of the most debated topics in the United States today, gun control. There are two extremely opposite views on this topic: the belief that guns enable crime, and the belief that guns deter crime. These polar opposites leave room for a very good discussion of what facts and truths may lie behind this topic. Throughout this essay I will be analyzing both sides of this issue. The significance of a topic such as gun control is very prevalent in today’s society. Some see it sad that we must argue over one of our supposedly deemed unalienable rights such as bearing a firearm.
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.
For this reason, it is incredibly hard for the country to agree or disagree on controversial topics such as gun control. Gun control laws and restrictions are methods in reducing the accessibility of firearms to the ordinary citizen. The belief is that with less dangerous firearms in the streets, the less crime there will be. Numerous studies and evidence show that a reduction of gun ownership can ironically increase the crime rate. This trend might seem counter intuitive but when seen at a different perspective, it becomes logical. When law abiding citizens are not able to purchase a weapon but a criminal is through illegal means such as the black market, it leaves people helpless against the gunman. Many advocates for gun control seem to ignore the facts and trends that show that gun ownership and crime rate does not have any correlation. Instead, these advocates seem to rely on the emotional appeal of people, exploiting the tragedies that are caused by shootings, wars, and criminal activities. The purpose of this essay is to educate people on the negative side effects of gun control and on how guns can actually decrease
Gun control has become an increasingly controversial topic in the nation due to the continuous debates relating to gun control and whether or not laws should be passed to make it harder for guns to be obtained. Guns serve for a variety of purposes that range from good to bad. Guns are not for everyone. Some individuals cannot handle guns properly, and some choose to use guns inappropriately. Lately, guns have become more of a problem in our society. There has been an increasing amount of shootings that have taken many lives and have wounded people emotionally, not just physically. Although guns are used for protection, firearms are reportedly used more in crimes. More and more shootings are breaking out across the nation. As a result, the
In modern America today, the issue on gun violence and gun control is becoming a major issue in today's society. Many Americans agree owning a gun is their automatic right due to the second Amendment. There are also politicians who are in favor of background checks when purchasing a gun from commercial industries and internet sales. The topic on banning assault weapons has many politicians arguing amongst themselves as well. We should continue to fight for gun control and reduce violence without Americans losing their right to the second amendment.
The unfortunate necessity in regard to the question of gun violence is that as long as there are people that are intent on violence, their would be victims have the right to protect themselves, their families, and their property, by whatever legal means necessary.
First off people are killing other people with guns. According to Davidson(2015,” A murderer can often kill one person or two with a knife before being stopped. But to really rack up those mind-blowing death counts- to make sure many lives are destroyed and families ruined in the space of 5 or 10 minutes- you need a gun.” What the author means by this is that guns are the leading cause of death in a murder. For example, many people in New York or Chicago are killed by guns every day. To conclude, I believe that many people in this world are the cause of gun violence, so they should
People all across the world are debating about whether to require the start of reducing gun violence. Guns have always been a part of American culture, even before we became the America we know today. In colonial times and the days of the Wild West, guns were an essential part of survival. They were needed to kill animals for food and to protect against unwanted trespassers and predators. However, in these modern times, because we have conveniences such as Hannaford and organized police systems, guns have gone from tools of necessity to novelty toys. For the most part, people own guns in this century for sporting reasons or to protect their families and home from intrusion. The simplicity of a gun and the lack of effort it requires owning
The debate of gun control or violence has gained momentum after the Sandy Hook Elementary Aurora and school, Colorado film theater shootings. People feel sympathetic for the families who lost their lives in a horrifying way. There is a common saying, "people kill people, gun do not kill," the paper explores the validity of the statement. The debate should be whether the issues or challenge is gun access or the individual with trigger access. The researcher maintains that crime or violence leading to death can be lowered if the guns ' purchase could be legalized and training for the appropriate gun use was conducted.
The topic of gun violence is one the most debatable subjects to the U.S citizen. On one hand people say that we should all carry guns around for protection, while on the other hand people say we should ‘t due to the harm they can cause when used in threatening ways like shootings etc. I believe both arguments are valid, But I think there is one way to please both sides.
Former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer once said "Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror". Spitzer’s words makes one think: should we fear the person behind the gun or the gun itself? The majority of violent crimes that happen in America are not only caused by a criminal, but also the weapon in which the criminal is holding. America’s gun violence problem stems from the increasing accessibility of firearms. Many of the mass shootings in America could have been prevented if access to semi-automatic and automatic weapons were completely banned. Gun violence is an arising issue, and a change needs to be made concerning the gun laws in the U.S. Stricter gun control laws is necessary to prevent high accessibility to firearms and mass shootings, also research shows that Australia’s strict gun control laws are proven to be more efficient in preventing gun violence.
Guns and crime. These two words sound interesting, right? Now think about it deeply, do they really link to each other? Do guns surely lead to crime and violent issues? If so, should governments set restrictive rules for people who own and use the guns, such as provide the mental health reports, and test the shooting skills before purchasing the guns? These questions have been mentioned and discussed over and over again in today’s world. We can often hear the news about gun violence, such as a tragic mass shooting somewhere around the world and tons of victims who died from the accident, or husband that shot his wife by accident. Thus, many people, especially people in America, are asking, and even doubting whether or not it is beneficial to own guns at home without a license. In my opinion, I think that owning a gun can be helpful sometimes in some ways, as it can always be the extremely powerful and helpful weapon for self-defense, especially when help from the law enforcement officers are not available.
