The effect of irony in O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” is to reveal character traits and to provoke the reader into analyzing them. Situational irony is used to show how loving both Jim and Della are. For example, Della states, “… I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn’t have live… without giving you a present,” and Jim later voices, “I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” After buying what they thought would be the perfect gift for each other, they found out that, for the time being, the gifts were useless because the combs were for Della’s now cut off hair, and the fob chain was for the the watch that Jim sold for her. This reveals how they loved each other so much that they gave up their most prized possession
Irony happens in a lot of places in the stories Flowers for Algernon and The Necklace. Irony happens in The Necklace when Mathilde loses her friends Necklace she bought a 36 thousand franc necklace. Meanwhile, the necklace that she actually lost was only worth about 500 francs. In The Necklace, the irony is shown when “Madame Forestier, deeply moved, took her hands. “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was at the very most five hundred francs!..” (Maupassant, 5). It is ironic that she spent ten years paying for something that was worth less than the necklace that she bought to replace the false necklace with. There is also irony in Flowers for Algernon when Charlie is unhappy due to the operation that
This leads to her idea of selling her most prized possession: her hair, to get Jim his present. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his most prized possession which was a pocket-watch that was passed down from his grandfather to his father and then to him. He sells that watch and buys Della a set of beautiful tortoise shell combs for her hair. Thus leading to the use of situational irony in which they both receive gifts for something they gave up in order to give the other a gift.
Competition is the process of competing for a prize or advantage. Usually, marriage and competition are complete opposites. But in this castle, everything about them are considered the same. The Heir (Kiera Cass), is about a young girl named Eadlyn. She is forced to go through a Selection that she does not want to do. This means that she will have 35 suitors ( young princes), at the castle who will do anything to win over her heart, all to be the King and Queen of Illea. The Heir is a quality book in most of the elements chosen. In The Heir, Kiera Cass uses characterization and irony to show a quality plot and, resolution to develop a disappointing ending.
In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, metafiction is used to further the story. O'Brien used the metafictional devices of irony, and nonlinear sequencing of events in order to push his story and properly represent the experience of war. Each metafictional device is used in order to advance the meaning of the story and let the reader truly understand the emotions and experience of being at war. Whether or not the story is perfectly true is not important, for O'Brien is telling the story of the hardships and brotherhood of war rather than the exact facts.
O’Connor uses irony to bring humor to her story. For example, Crater says “I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth” (O’Connor). What she meant was she wouldn’t trade her daughter for anything on earth, but what she really says is she’d trade her daughter for nothing at all. The irony is further shown when Crater does, in fact, give her daughter up for nothing. Shiftlet scammed her of her car and money, and her daughter is left at a diner. She wanted a good man for a son-in-law, but now she doesn’t even have a son-in-law. Another example of irony is when Shiftlet prays for God to clean the world of filth, but he himself is the filth he was asking God to clean.
Irony is portrayed throughout the motif of the women's stockings in the ‘Death of a Salesman’. Willy “cause i get so lonely” this is ironic as he is lonely but every time his wife Linda would want to talk he would say “I’m tired” with that said Linda would not continue any further, mainly because she had no choice, her husband did not want to talk any further, therefore making her comply with his wishes. As the only duties Linda ever had was to take care of her family and the house, but when her family did not want to talk she had nothing else to do, but think of how to make situations better, due to her son’s being “lost” and her husband out on business she accumulated a lot of time to build up an “infinite
The Sword in the Stone takes place during the Medieval Times in England in the Forest Sauvage and a little part of it also occurs in London. In the tale Wart and Kay were walking in the forest when they encountered a seven foot tall giant by the name of Little John. He brought them to the camp of a man named Robin Hood. There, Robin tells Wart and Kay that one of his men, Friar Truck, had been kidnapped and asks if they would be willing to help. He had been kidnapped by Morgan le Fay, the queen of fairies who had also captured a servant of Sir Ector's and a village idiot named Wat. Wart and Kay agree to rescue the three men. Prior to Wart and Kay going on with their mission, Robin hands them small knives that will protect them because fairies
It was three in the morning, light beats of cool rain hitting the windows, casting strange shadows onto the walls. Audrey was sleeping peacefully beside her, lips parted and legs tucked close, the heat from her body somehow warming Desiree’s insides. She looked at the other with a soft gaze and a fond smile on her face, heart melting at the sight. Audrey’s face slept so adorably, so soft and loose, sleep allowing her to become vulnerable and almost young again. It was an indulgence, to view Audrey as young and so care free in her sleep. To imagine their lives as easy as they wanted, as successful as they wished. Desiree longed to keep her like that, keep her away from trouble and danger, love care for her deeply enough to keep her safe
Irony is the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. This essay will emphasize and recognize the power of irony in American Literature. “To Build a Fire,” “The Story of an Hour,” and “The Crucible” all show strong elements of irony. A quote, pulled from the book “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” says that, “In each case, the sign carries with it a customary meaning, but that doesn’t guarantee it will deliver the received meaning.” Ironic words may have many meanings, but will never have the meaning you expect. In this essay three different stories will represent the three main different types of irony. The types of irony shown in this essay will be situational irony, dramatic irony, and verbal irony.
Irony and satire are probably most usually met means of expressing humour in literary works. Both of these means can be similar and very different at the same time. In some cases irony and satire can be used as synonyms. Both satire and irony can be found in literature, television, movies, theatre and even in artwork. Satire, however, is a genre, whereas irony is a technique.
O. Henry is known for writing and including irony in his writing. In the story, “The Gift of the Magi” He used irony when Della sold her hair to buy her husband, James a watch chain for his watch to replace his leather watch chain for Christmas, but her husband James sold his watch to give Della some beautiful combs for her hair, but both the hair and the watch were gone. They were both very poor and so they had to earn money quickly so they sold their most prized belongings for gifts for each other. The Irony in the story was that they had both bought new and improved accesories for their most prized possessions but for them to afford them, they sold their own prized possession and so when it was time to receive their gifts, They had already lost what they needed for the gift. Della lost her hair for the gold watch chain and james lost the watch for the turtle shell combs.
In the story, The Gift of the Magi, the author, O. Henry, does a great job using irony throughout the story. In the story, irony is used multiple times, and in many different ways. There are examples of irony in the beginning, middle, and end of The Gift of the Magi. The two different types of irony used in the story are dramatic and situational irony. In the beginning of the story, irony is used right away.
The irony in this story can be seen in different areas of this story. An example of situational irony in this story is that Elisa does not get time to experience actually motherhood because of work, and she puts all of herself into raising her plants and making sure they are taken care of. “With her trowel she turned the soil over and over, and smoothed it and patted it firm.” (DiYanni, 2007, 728). Also an example of verbal irony in this story would be when Henry offers to Elisa to take her to a boxing match, and he says "I don't think you'd like it, but I'll take you if you really want to go.” (DiYanni, 2007, 733). He is offering to take her, so he feels like he is doing good, but in reality he is just not what Elisa wants to hear. I believe
The short story, “Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, is an incredible story, a typical love story with many situation where there is tons irony and symbolism. The entire story is ironic in the way both individuals bought gifts that became unusable, it is also filled with symbolism, all of the gifts and money symbolized a major role in this story. The author uses the irony to make the story more interesting. The story is completely ironic.
In this story, “The Gift of the Magi,” the author uses different situations throughout the story to show irony. “For there lay the combs- the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped for long in a Broadway window.”(108). In these words, the author is describing what Della had wanted for a very long time, but no longer has her long hair. This represents irony because Della sold her hair to buy the watch chain for Jim and now he no longer has the watch and Della is left with eighty-one cents. The story also states,” I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on.”(108). Briefly, the author shows that Jim has given up his most valuable possession for someone he loved. This shows irony because now Della has no hair for the combs and Jim has no watch for his new watch chain. They are both left with two useless items. According to the author, the text also says,”And here i have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.”(108). In this quote, the author is directly stating how irony is used in the story. This is showing how the two people sacrificed something for each other but ended up both items being useless because they gave up the things the items were useful to. Given these points, the author uses irony to demonstrate problems throughout the story in different situations.
