Irony happens in a lot of places in the stories Flowers for Algernon and The Necklace. Irony happens in The Necklace when Mathilde loses her friends Necklace she bought a 36 thousand franc necklace. Meanwhile, the necklace that she actually lost was only worth about 500 francs. In The Necklace, the irony is shown when “Madame Forestier, deeply moved, took her hands. “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was at the very most five hundred francs!..” (Maupassant, 5). It is ironic that she spent ten years paying for something that was worth less than the necklace that she bought to replace the false necklace with. There are three different forms of irony used in the textbook: Dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. Dramatic Irony is used a lot in plays. It is when the reader knows something that the character doesn’t. Situational irony is when something happens that isn’t the expected outcome, typically with sharp contrasts and contradictions. Verbal irony is synonymous with sarcasm.

In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Anderson uses irony to exaggerate Melinda's loss in friendship. After Heather told Melinda she doesn’t want to be friends with her anymore, she ended up giving Melinda a thank you card for understanding that Heather does not want to be friends with Melinda anymore and returned her friendship necklace. Dramatic Irony is when there is a scene in the short story or novel (or whatever you are reading or watching) that has a character or characters that don’t understand or know what is going on around them. An example of this in “Just Lather that’s all” is when Captain Torrez walks into the barber shop; the barber was a rebel and the Captain is trying to kill all the rebels. The reason this is Dramatic Irony is that we know that the barber recognizes the Captain however, the Captain does not acknowledge that the barber is a rebel. In The Glass Menagerie, it is ironic how Tom speaks badly of his father and his leaving home but in the end he leaves home just like his father, the man "in love with long distances (Williams 30)''. The fact that Amanda wants what is best for her children is ironic because she worries so much over it that she doesn't realize what is best for them.

This leads to her idea of selling her most prized possession: her hair, to get Jim his present. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his most prized possession which was a pocket-watch that was passed down from his grandfather to his father and then to him. He sells that watch and buys Della a set of beautiful tortoise shell combs for her hair. Thus leading to the use of situational irony in which they both receive gifts for something they gave up in order to give the other a gift.

The big vein on his neck had made the barber crazy nervous. He could just kill him at that moment. The reader at this point is expecting that he will kill the murderer but that’s when irony comes in. “I don’t want blood on my hands. Just lather, that’s all. You are the executioner and I am the barber” (Tellez 127). This quote sets off irony because the readers thought that the barber was going to kill the murderer but he does not. When Torres is about to leave the barbershop, he says, “‘They told me that you’d kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn’t easy. You can take my word for it.’” (Tellez 126). This is another example of irony because the readers did not expect the murderer to know he was thinking on killing him. This story is a great example of irony because it basically examples the definition of the word.

The symbol the author talked mainly about is the Glass Castle, it represented so much in this book and got them through many years especially for Jeanette it stand for hope and for the better though there father rex walls couldn't physically build the glass house. I really didn't think the kids really cared about the house the dad had in mind not only because they lost faith in the fact that the dad been saying that for far too long but because it always stand for something more family, love and represent what the family went through and pain they went through for the better life they have now living. This imaginary glass home was there all along they may not have seen it but it was right in front of them the whole time it was there family, as long as they were together there glass (huge, fancy, stone house) remained it was where ever they were together. The castle shows by using a physical object to represent an idea or emotion the power of family and love the strength of it can get you through any blocking or stopping things of life. We are like the glass huge, fancy, stone house we are delicate and breakable we break easily and time is very valuable/very dearly loved before we fall into pieces and slip but we fall together and together we are not alone we will pick up the pieces together and it won't matter how long it takes because we'll get through together because no one gets left behind.

In the drama play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the younger family received a 10,000 dollar life insurance check for mamas husband. Mama gave a portion of this money to Walter Lee,her son, and trusted him with it. Walter Lee who was wanting to spend the money to invest in a liquor store, but lost the money to Willy Harris they then realize that their dream may be dead. At this point they need hope and in this play it symbolises a lot of with the specific like a specific object (Mamas plant) or a general object (money). She sometimes even uses symbols through people (Beneatha) to get certain points across. The author is clever with using these symbolisms representing current problems, issues, or events.

There is plenty of irony in “The Necklace”. The situational irony in this story happens at the end of the story when Mathilde, who really does not like hard labor or anything lower class finds out that she has had to give up the greatest years of her life to save up and replace a necklace that she discovers is a fake.  For a person who prided herself in that kind of taste and appearance on the upper class could not even tell the difference between the fake and valuable. The dramatic
