Gatsby’s meeting with daisy compared to his expectations of this meeting was not far off. In the begging they were both timid, at one point Gatsby got up and left daisy all only. But later in Gatsby’s house they warmed up to each other, they were admiring all of Gatsby’s belongings. By the end of the chapter they were holding hands and could be described as being in love with one another again. I don’t know what more Gatsby could want or expect because she is still married to tom. I’m shore his expectations were let down because everyone hopes for so much but little ever comes close. However, Cinderella’s self-perception of optimism and hope, enables her to believe that ultimately, her life will naturally improve with these attributes. True to her convictions, Cinderella gets her happily ever after by going to the ball where the prince falls in love with her. Cinderella is saved from her evil. On the other hand, Cinderella can be viewed as a victim who does nothing to enable herself to escape her abusive reality, insteads helplessly waits for fate to intervene. She does not confront the situation nor independently strive to improve her circumstances. Correspondingly, how individuals act when faced with conflict is strongly influenced by their self-perception. It is possible to become confused between reality and illusion, which is determined by their level of self-awareness. In Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire, the character of Stella struggles between the control of her husband and sister. Throughout the play, this conflict is demonstrated as she struggles with becoming aware of her abusive household and the contrast to the fairytale illusion she desperately clings to. Ultimately, Stella’s choice to maintain her illusion, rather than confronting her reality, is due to the self-perception of her need to depend on others and desire for idealism, which overall controls her fate.
The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in the summer of 1922 during a time when women were venturing out into unknown territory. Women were given the right to vote and were taking more leadership positions that men had previously dominated. However, this was also a time when women were still placed in a domestic role where men had the overriding decisions and looked down on women who showed strength in these new opportunities. After the war, Fitzgerald recognized that women had become an economic power, and he connects this with the changing status of an emancipated woman. The correct portrayal of women in literature is highly significant as women have been marginalized throughout history. Although Charles Dickens wrote powerful and dominant female characters in his novel Great Expectations, Dickens’ portrayal of female strength is unsympathetic considering the period when he wrote this novel. During the Victorian Era, women never had dominance in situations and had less rights than men. In this case, Dickens alienated the female characters by writing them with characteristics that imply a negative connotation to the readers. Negative characteristics are still important for the development of a character, of course, but the Dicken’s depiction submits that women victimize Pip. The patriarchy and power in relationships are contrasted by the powerful female characters. Furthermore, the differences between men and women in Great Expectations are connected to social constructs rather than biological development. In addition, each female character have a significant impact on the male protagonist, Pip. Each female character is also shown negatively on how each of them is “redeemed” as the plot advances.
