The Cause of Macbeth's Destruction in William Shakespeare's Macbeth

     In Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of Macbeth the main character Macbeth is driven from his status as a well respected warrior and lord of not one, but two Scottish regions to a dishonest, unloyal murderer. Macbeth gets caught in a web of lies and vile acts of murder in which he brings about his own demise. His criminal actions lead up to his tragic ending of life. ‘ They have tied me to a stake; I cannot fly, But bearlike I must fight the course.’ His great ambition and gullibility of the witches predictions are two of the biggest factors of his downfall;however, Lady Macbeth was probably the biggest influence in the whole tragedy.

In Shakespare’s play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth’s destiny is formed by her own actions through mind and free-will. In act I, Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to murder Duncan, even though Macbeth was strongly against it. Lady Macbeth is very successful at persuading him to go against his better judgment. She entirely changes the stereotype of women being kind and caring in the first act. After Macbeth writes home telling of his murderous plans, Lady Macbeth begins talking to evil spirits. Because women often lack the ruthlessness to kill someone, Lady Macbeth asks the spirits to make her male. One of the most vivid descriptions of Lady Macbeth’s wickedness is directly after Macbeth announces to her he does not want to kill Duncan. This speech symbolizes Lady Macbeth’s evilness. At this point in the novel Macbeth is using the witches as a guideline to his life. The apparition that he cannot be harmed by anyone born of woman creates a false sense of security within himself. Even at this point, Macbeth still has a choice of whether or not to believe the witches. The weird sisters have not put any spell on him; they have just filled his greedy mind with a sense of security and power for kingship.

On the contrary, Lady Macbeth begins as a ruthless woman. She has a manipulative and controlling character, convincing Macbeth to kill King Duncan; she will do anything to gain power. When she says, “How tender ‘tis to love the babe…I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out” (I.vii. 55-58), she shows her ruthlessness and her “bad” ambition. In her “role reversal” with Macbeth, she gains somewhat of a conscience and realizes her guilt. When she tells him, “You must leave this” (III. ii. 35), she wants Macbeth to forget about his plan to murder Banquo’s family. She is very hesitant about committing another murder and does not want Macbeth to follow through with his plan.

Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’ is about the leading male protagonist succumbing to his ambition and need for power. Though Macbeth is liable for his own actions, he is not solely responsible for the events that eventually result in his downfall. Macbeth is corrupted by his wife, Lady Macbeth, as well as the three weird sisters. Macbeth’s contribution towards his downfall is his strong ambitious nature. Lady Macbeth is the person who induces Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. The three weird sisters (witches) play with Macbeth’s ambitious nature and sense of security. Macbeth’s downfall is due to himself and two external factors.

In Act 1, Scene 7, Lines 56-57, "When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man", Lady Macbeth orchestrates Macbeth’s self-esteem by taunting his manliness when Macbeth doesn’t plan on following through with her plan. Moments later, she tells him how he should act and what he needs to do, in Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 71-75, “When Duncan is asleep...look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t.” She successfully augments Macbeth’s ambition and exhorts him to commit atrocities. After Duncan’s murder, Macbeth no longer values Lady Macbeth’s opinions- his actions are rash and selfish because they are made promptly. Interaction between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth falters since Macbeth is now swept up with erasing his tracks. The two perish as individuals- Macbeth is miserable with guilt caused by cold- blooded Lady Macbeth’s attribution of influence and plan. But instead of comforting her husband and talking him out of murdering more people, Lady Macbeth only gives one feeble attempt.

Macbeth’s lust for power would lay the foundation for his own self destruction. Macbeth’s encounter with witches was the start of this bane. If it were not for the three witches Macbeth met in the woods, then he would have never known that he was suppose to be king in the first place. These witches were one of the three reasons Macbeth would be known for his infamous and abominable reign. His own wife, Lady Macbeth, would be another reason they were both so detested; Lady Macbeth was the reason Macbeth even saw in the first place that he truly wanted to be king. When Lady Macbeth finds out that Macbeth is destined to be king, she is determined to make this happen as soon as possible. She convinces Macbeth that if he were to murder the current King Duncan, he would be king and she would be queen immediately. A character’s tragic downfall is often influenced by other characters, but this is not the case in Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. Macbeth conforms to the conditions of a tragic hero because in the beginning of the play, Macbeth is an honourable and trustworthy nobleman to King Duncan and all of Scotland. However, throughout the play, Macbeth commits evil deeds such betrayal, treason, and murder solely because of his ambitions to remain in power. Macbeth murders others upon hearing the witches’ prophecies and even proceeds to return to them to remain in power. Macbeth is influenced and manipulated by his wife Lady Macbeth and The Witches, but he is ultimately responsible for his own tragic downfall. Macbeth’s tragic downfall is caused by his ‘vaulting ambition’ to become king. Thus, Macbeth has no one but his ruthless, cruel, and greedy self to blame for his own tragic downfall.

Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's wife, is the driving force that encourages Macbeth to overcome his doubts. She taunts him, calling him a "coward" and questioning his masculinity, because she knows Macbeth wants the power but lacks the gusto to do what it takes to achieve it. This uses Macbeth's ambition against him, as it calls him cowardly, when as a warrior, he spends a lot of time proving his lack of cowardice, in a time period where gender roles had major influence over people. Macbeth lets his ambition control him, allowing Lady Macbeth to drive him over the edge of his morale boundaries, which was the beginning of his demise (Shakespeare). With the external sources around Macbeth, it could appear like the witches and Lady Macbeth are what led to his downfall, but it is important to remember Macbeth's ambition was the source of pressure from outside sources and led to him being influenced by them.

The Weird Sisters, although not completely responsible, influence and initiate the start of events through Macbeth. Ultimately, the sisters act as the opening for the downfall of the story. As written in the article it states, “The witches bring dark thoughts into being and give flesh to the forbidden.. Companions of violence, the witches bring the realization of its effects into being” (Von Rumelin). This explains how the sisters give Macbeth a prophecy stating that one day he will become king, so his conscious immediately turns to making the words become a reality. Without the prophecy from the sisters, Macbeth would never have thought about becoming the king.

In the story Macbeth, the main character was known as a hero of war. One day as he was walking , 3 witches approached him and gave him a prophecy,telling him, he’d be king. At the time,Scotland was being ruled by a man named Duncan . When Macbeth told his wife, Lady Macbeth about the prophecy , she gave him the idea to kill Duncan. After killing Duncan, Macbeth became extremely paranoid and guilty.

In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, Macbeth is responsible for his own downfall and death regardless of the influence of the Three Witches and Lady Macbeth. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a trustworthy and fearless fighter who is loyal to his king until he lets his ambition overrule him. He becomes selfish and desperately desires to be king. Acting on these desires, Macbeth ruthlessly kills King Duncan thus becoming king. Once king, Macbeth buries his darkness protecting his evilness from all.

Was it Macbeth that did all these evil deeds or was it someone else. Was his story really cursed or was it his wife’s bidding. Macbeth has killed the king and took the crown then has killed others to protect himself. He gets three prophecies in the beginning that become true and three in the near end that lead to his fall. I think it is Macbeth’s fault for all his actions and the cause of his downfall.

Many of people have heard the tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The story revolves on a sequence of misfortunate events that take place when Macbeth makes immoral decisions to be king. In the play, Shakespeare shows how power can cause corruption in a human’s brain. Macbeth himself was not a very confident person, though he had a kind soul to begin with, he was easily influenced and gullible. Through the prophecies of the evil beings, an insignificant seed was planted in Macbeth. That spark of wealth and fortune caused the tyrant within him to awake. Which eventually lead to his fatal death. His ambition lead him to murder, go insane and become very superstitious.

In the Shakespearian play, Macbeth cannot be solely responsibly for the tyranny that he causes. Macbeths close relationship with lady Macbeth and his own ambitions to become king lead him to many evil actions. This relationship causes many fatalities, which is turn leads to changes in the personality of lady Macbeth and this can be seen, as she has difficulty in coping with the situation that she has put herself in. However, slow reactions by other characters in the play, may have been the cause many unnecessary events to occur. But, theses may not have mattered is it wasn’t for the apparitions given to two characters by the evil sisters, these
