The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is a healthcare program created by president Obama’s administration. The goal of the Affordable Care Act is to make sure every United States citizen has health insurance. The Affordable Care Act provides “affordable” health insurance plans to citizens that do not have any and make about $15,000 a year. While the idea of providing health insurance to the millions of American’s that cannot afford it is great, everything comes at a cost. According to Emily Miller, Obamacare is causing people’s health insurance premiums to rise by around 1 to 9 percent (Miller 15-15). Not only are insurance premiums rising, but ever since the Supreme Court declared the Affordable Care Act constitutional approximately 20 tax hikes have been approved (Battersby). All the aforementioned reasons are helping pay for Obamacare. Although providing health insurance for people that cannot afford it is important, the Affordable Care Act should be revoked because it will hurt the economy.

The Affordable Care Act has made many positive changes for uninsured and underinsured citizens. With the addition of a program called Health Insurance Marketplace, it is now possible for uninsured people in every state to purchase private insurance plans, those making under 400% or less of the Federal Poverty Level will be able to have tax credits making insurance more affordable (Lathrop & Hodnicki, 2014). Insurance companies are no longer allowed to cancel a policy or raise rates when a client gets sick. Insurance companies cannot refuse coverage to individuals with preexisting conditions such as cancer (“Quality Improvement,” 2015). The Affordable Care Act is mainly directed to the needs of Americans in need of healthcare that are not already covered.

During the botched 2010 roll out of the affordable care act, multiple veteran’s agencies marched on Washington with fears of how the Tax/Mandate would affect indigent veterans who could not afford the penalty and could not afford secondary insurance. In their hubris, these agents pushed an agenda that has greatly hurt the veteran population.

The Healthcare reform will affect all Americans. The issue has many Americans believing it is a great thing for our country while others believe it is a terrible idea and then of course there are those who don’t know what to think. The Affordable Care Act has brought many changes to healthcare in the United States. The law was enacted in two parts: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010 and was amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act on March 30, 2010. The name “Affordable Care Act” is used to refer to the final, amended version of the law. The Act provided Americans with better health security by expanding coverage, held insurance companies accountable, lowered health care costs, guaranteed more choices and enhanced the care for all Americans (Medicaid.gov). Health insurance market places allowed shoppers to compare health plan that counted as minimum essential coverage.

Universal Healthcare in the United States has been a long time journey that dates back decades and we, as a country, are far behind other developed countries who have had universal healthcare for a long time. Today, Healthcare is obtained through employers or by people paying for it by themselves, which is incredibly expensive due to high premiums. The Affordable Care Act is considered one of the most important legislations related to health care reform to ever been enacted in the history of the United States (Cannan, 2013). The ACA was developed in order to give consumers control of their health care and to provide them with a means of power. The intention was for Americans to have stability and flexibility when it came to making personal healthcare decisions. Many citizens have been able to opportunity obtain affordable healthcare coverage with this reform that they did not have before. Unfortunately, some Americans are uninsured and do not have the means to pay for health insurance, and are forced to pay the fine. Patients Rights can sometimes be about making choices. you would probably want your parents to go with you to make your choices of what to do when you're in the hospital and your sick because your parents would probably know more that you would know about it and you could make the wrong choice if you're not thinking correctly. If you were in an a comma and you already made choices about what you want to do before you were in an a comma,your parents should have the right to decide something else for you because your choice of what you want to do may not be the right choice as you think it would might be.

The affordable health care act has received its fair share of criticism as well. Opponents of the bill fell that the cost of this bill will be higher that before. People we be seen for more care and more sick people will be diagnosed with illnesses and they will be a constant visitor in medical facilities looking for care. Others argue the level of service provided. The main thing these critiques seem to point to is the cost and how effective is the bill finically. These things wont be determined or seen until this bill is riding in full effect in the years to come.

With the new act, insurance companies are no longer able to deny coverage to anyone based on their history of illnesses, current mental health illnesses, or potential future development of an illness. Along with coverage of pre-existing conditions and prohibiting insurance companies to cancel coverage if a person becomes ill, the act is the first act in history that “ensures that mental health and substance abuse treatment services are required benefits in all basic health insurance packages” providing health for a much wider range of people (ProCon.org). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act “prohibits all health plans, including grandfathered plans, from rescinding a health insurance policy once one is covered” (ProCon.org). The only possible reason for a health insurance policy to rescind ones coverage is if “the enrollee has committed fraud or made an ‘intentional misrepresentation of material fact” (ProCon.org). The universal coverage by this new act is a major benefit in the structure of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
