A Highly Controversial Topic, the Tenure System in Public Schools The public schools in America have a highly controversial topic, and it is should the tenure system in public schools be eliminated. First, what is tenure? Tenure is the period of how long an employee has worked for a company, school, and just for any type of job. The longer the employee has been working for an employer in the same job, the higher the tenure that person will have. By having higher tenure that person will receive more benefits. Such as, having job stability, higher pay, more recognition, and just have many more benefits compared to someone who has no tenure or less tenure. It can also take up a while for those tenured teachers to get removed from the school due to them not performing as the way they should be. In an article from the teacher tenure, it explains that in New York City it costs an average of $250,000 to fire a teacher in New York City. Also, that it in Michigan it can take up to 335 days to remove a tenured teacher in Michigan before the courts get involved. It shouldn’t cost that much, or take that long to get an underperforming tenure teacher out of their job. But for those who are, they should be reevaluated to see if they’re really worthy of having all those benefits. If not, those teachers should have some kind of actions taken towards them, whether it be less benefits, maybe risk losing their job, and just something that will make them realize that they have a job to do as teachers and that’s to teach. I understand it’s also up to the students to be motivated to learn, but how can they learn if the teacher is not properly teaching them and doesn’t care for their students success or helping them gain the knowledge and skills that they need. Having tenured teachers that aren’t motivated to teach and don’t care for their students, results to having a negative impact on those students. Which makes those students not fully prepared for their future classes. It’s just a negative impact all around because only the teacher benefits and no one
