UGC's use of Television for Education
For over two decades University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has been using television for higher education. In 1984 UGC launched “UGC Countrywide Classroom” on Doordarshan –the National Network of Television in India. Specially designed educational television programs, either imported or locally produced, were telecast for the benefit of undergraduate and post graduate students across the country. The need for using television for higher education was necessitated due to enormous growth in student population in higher education and increase in number of higher educational institutions in the country but there was not enough matching growth in terms of proper infrastructure and

Popularly known as Virtual Classrooms, these terminals enable students, scholars and teachers across the country share their knowledge and experience. Each day lectures on selected topics, involving reputed experts, are delivered through EDUSAT. Each lectures is followed by a live interaction, through two way audio/video, among the participants across the country. UGC has successfully used the virtual classrooms for conduct of workshops, training programs and online courses. In addition to the VYAS and the Virtual Classrooms CEC has taken up many serious initiatives to engage academics, media professionals and multimedia experts in packaging of knowledge in various forms. These initiatives include: Development of e-Content, Multimedia, Training of teachers in e-content development, Development of Learning Object Repository (LOR), Conduct of On-Line Courses using VYAS, EDUSAT and Internet, Production of syllabus oriented ETV Programs for undergraduate students and developing International linkages for sharing of knowledge at global level. From Countrywide Classroom to Virtual Classroom and packaging of knowledge, UGC has come a long way, but the scheme is yet to achieve its potential and make its presence felt in an effective manner. Today when television penetration is very high, the technology is spreading across the rural areas, satellites and transponders are manufactured like cars,
The complete scope of distance education has extended. This is because, the increase of accessibility to videos of teachers giving lectures, showing diagrams and explaining concepts are much like a real classroom. Nonprofit organizations have websites to seek volunteers and donations in order to need. Some sites are dedicated themselves to spreading knowledge among the people of all age groups. For example: Wikipedia, Coursera, Babbel, Archive, and Teachertube.
Due to that, the use of the VLE has increased and most of schools and universities now have a functioning Virtual Learning Environment as a part of their teaching and learning programs. For instance, even in primary and secondary schools the Internet-based activities are generally added to enrich presently learning activities.
Television has greatly impacted our society and our day to day conduct. It has changed our lifestyles. It plays a major role in the growth of our culture. Television has now become one of the most important sources of entertainment for a lot of us. It works as an entertainer each day. Starting from black and white screens, television has transformed completely into the color from with high resolution. TV has progressed in terms of looks and features, with the technology the plasma TV invented which is slim in form and environmental friendly. Television has changed our lives through introducing varieties of the method to reduced boredom. It has some positive effects to enhance the education methods and link us to the rest of world through news and talk shows (Bilandzic & Rossler, 2004).
This class was one of most effective classes for teacher in 21 century because it teaches how to integrate technology into classroom and shows how much technology changed face of classrooms. Now student doesn’t have to come to actual classroom or even teacher. Online classrooms start to become so popular because students and teacher in both side can reach to the class at any time.
The importance of television goes deeper than mindless entertainment. It is an integral part of social interactions that builds communities and good relations globally. While it still functions as an excellent source of entertainment, it also educates the public and inspires lifelong learners. These learners often become educators just by spreading the ideas that they become passionate about to others and then, those ideas transform into action and changes that translate into realities beyond the television.
While attending the University of Florida (UF), I took classes that focused on all aspects of television production. Such as: the laws and regulations of television and new media, ethics
The past 70 years of American history have witnessed several fundamental issues and events that have since defined and/or changed America. However, there is one event that has had one of the, if not the, largest impacts on America: the invention of the television.
Technology is the crucial factor for education sector to maintain all the data and information more effectively and efficiently. Increasing dependence on the technology is adjusting student-teacher cooperation with the progression of time (Candace, 2004). Nowadays, people use computers and internet for learning different programs. Internet helps students to find their own answers without the help of the teachers. Information technology like internet is increasing the opportunities to learn new things more easily and quickly. There are various online libraries that help the students and teachers with reading materials. Students can also post their work online for the teachers to read and grade. For instances: Westcliff university is using GAP (online system) where the student can see the question and post their answer online and the teachers can check the students work online as well. Information system has brought advancement in learning process with the help of audio-visual education. Nowadays, most of the students are taught with projectors and speakers with the help of power point presentation. In today’s technological world, most of the education sector utilizes the latest technology and software so as to enhance the overall learning experience of the students (Pandey,

Television is an American staple. According to Mitchell Stephens, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at New York University, Television as we know it, was first introduced in 1927.(Stevens) currently over 98% of American households have at least 1 television set and the average American watches around 3 to 4 hours of television daily. The thought that television can entertain and inform as well as influence is equally powerful and disturbing. As early as the 1920 's, Thomas Edison recognized the potential of television as medium of influence. He stated “the motion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system and...in a few years it will supplant largely, if not entirely, the use of textbooks”( qtd in Fabos).
TV, more commonly known as ‘television’ is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. In ancient Greek tèle means ‘far', and in Latin visio means sight. From my perspective and many people of the world television has changed the way we live. Television has brought many amazing things, however nothing is perfect.
Thus, the main flaw of using an online instruction is students and teachers have limited interactions and communications. As a result, it is necessary for teachers and course developers to construct a community and to help everyone to participate in the course, in order to overcome this main flaw of virtual learning and improve its efficiency.
As humans, we learn to adapt in order to survive. With technology being everywhere in our modernized society, we have adapted by incorporating it into our everyday lives, including television. Over 90% of homes today own at least one TV. On average, children (8 months to 8 years of age) in the US are being exposed to 4 hours of television per day (Hamel and Rideout). What does this mean for the development of children? Instead of pushing away our TV’s because of distractions, we can use them to educate the next generation. While books have always been the base for learning for many centuries, times are changing. We live in a new era where everything demands a higher level of expertise. Kids these days need a better education in order gain the necessary skills to succeed later in life. Television has the ability to promote early learning and development in children. By introducing education earlier, through the use of television programs, kids will voluntarily engage themselves in learning without even realizing it. Educational programs and TV shows expose children to language outside of their home, overall improving their understanding of language and actions associated with it. Instead of throwing our technology to the side and sticking to the old fashion books, we should be integrating new forms of education with the changing times. TVs allow children to actively learn verbally and visually, making it more effective than any book. By altering programs to expose children
According to Anthony (1991) as reported by James (n.d), television is a telecommunication system used worldwide for receiving and transmitting motion pictures with or without accompanying sound over a distance. Emanuel Akapan (1998) as cited by James (n.d) asserts that television as a telecommunication medium has added to the overall development in Nigeria and is still making a lot of impact on the economic, cultural, social and educational growth of the nation. He adds that television is the most effective modern tool of mass communication available to mankind. Onabajo (2005), states television is an important communication medium whose major aim is to influence the mission and behavior of people that receive its communicated symbols. It can be used to create awareness on topical issues while
