Teachings of Catholics About Abortion
Catholics today agree that to directly end the life of a foetus in the womb is a serious moral sin.
Genesis tells us "Life begins at conception". This would suggest that from the moment of conception, the foetus is a human and has rights to life. "You shall not murder" Exodus 20:13 informs us that even if the child is in the womb it still has a life and having an abortion is seen as killing someone.
"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." Jeremiah 1:5, suggests that God knows the soul of every foetus, and therefore proves that the fertilised egg is a human life. Catholics believe that God's spirit lives in every person, even in an unborn child

This means that as soon as the egg is fertilized it is seen as a new life. Therefore, it would be true to say that Catholics are against abortion since "Thou shall not kill" is one of the commandments. By having an abortion a life is destroyed. This is known as murder.
The only time Catholics accept, but not necessarily agree with abortion, is when the mother is in great danger, and is likely to die if the pregnancy continues. However, this does not cover the issue of when a woman has been raped. Catholics believe that is it wrong to kill a child for the wrong doings of the father and for that reason should not be aborted.
Overall, the killing of a child is wrong, no matter whether it is in a womb or not. As a Catholic, we would see that having an abortion is a form of murder and therefore a moral sin.
AO3 Abortion is never justified. Discuss.
Abortion is an issue which many people have strong feelings about. But should the foetus have equal rights to the mother?
Some people may feel that if a mother was carrying an unwanted child, they should not be forced to keep the child just because of religious beliefs. She is the one that would have to carry the child for 9 months, so should have every option open to her.
The life of the mother is more important than the foetus if she is in real danger. The baby would not know a thing since
for women accused by their husbands of adultery. The priest is instructed to make a potion, the accused is ordered to drink it, and if she miscarries, she is considered guilty.?(Abortion in history) Early Catholics didn?t believe that the soul entered the fetus until later, 40 days for boys and 90 days for girls. Only in 1869 did the Catholic Church declare that the soul entered the fetus at conception, therefore rendering abortion murder.
Contraception is the deliberate prevention of conception or impregnation by various drugs, techniques, or devices – also more famously known as birth control. This research paper will examine the views of both the Catholic Church and the view that opposes the Catholic Church on this practice. Each view will be examined thoroughly with the reasoning behind each unique view.
This topic is also argued in different religions. The Catholic Church believes that abortion is murder and no person born or unborn should be unwillingly killed. Murder is against the Ten Commandments and a serious crime. They believe that abortion is wrong and just as bad as murder. Many Catholic protest abortion by holding protests outside of abortion clinics.
Abortion cannot be and is not murder, you are not taking the life of another
I specify Christians because I am not familiar with the rights or wrongs of abortions in other religions. Christians use the bible for teaching and reproof. The bible is not confusing when it comes to this issue. In the new world translation of the bible the psalmist states “Your eyes saw even the embryo of me.” (Psalm 139:16) There are several instances where God has condemned the murder of an unborn child. In Exodus 21: 22-23 22 there is an illustration and condemnation of evens that cause the accidental harm of a pregnant woman. It states “If men should struggle with each other and they hurt a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but no fatality results, the offender must pay the damages imposed on him by the husband of the woman; and he must pay it through the judges. 23 But if a fatality does occur, then you must give life for life, God stated that a person would be called to account for injuring an unborn child. So, in his eyes, killing an unborn child is murder. (Ex. 21:22,
One important topic debated by many pro-choice and pro-lifers, is: at what point does a fetus become human? This is one of the determining factors of the controversy surrounding abortion. Pro-life activists claim that life begins at conception, stressing the idea that a human embryo is self-developing. And since it cannot become anything other than human, it is a living human. Albeit a fetus may technically of human origin, it does not have the ability to conduct a conscious thought. At that point, the biological qualities of an embryo are equivalent to a sesame seed, or an egg. Can we really say that every time we eat an egg, it is like eating an unborn child? According to pro-lifers, yes, and they are technically correct. An egg is a completely fertilized, undeveloped infant. Yet the average American eats them on a weekly basis. How can that be justified by the pro-life campaign? It cannot. For one to truly LOSE a life, one must be aware he or she is alive. Thought and emotion are
The issue of birth control remains one of the most controversial issues within the Catholic Church dividing members at all levels including the clergy. The Roman Catholic Church for the past 2000 years has been a major opponent of artificial birth control (BBC). Pope Paul VI made a clear declaration on the use of birth control when he wrote ‘the Encyclical Letter ‘Human Vitae’ on July 25, 1968 which banned Catholics from using contraceptives (Pope VI). These important declarations demonstrate the power of the Papacy to shape public policy on matters relating to human health and reproduction on a global level. The belief within the Catholic Church is that God have the sole power over the creation of life and humans have no role in this
Abortion is the voluntary act taken by a woman to terminate a pregnancy. It results in the death of a fetus or embryo. Pro-Choice groups advocate freedom of choice and often use scientific examples and facts to support their argument. The contrasting view to the Pro-Choices is that of the Pro-Life or ‘Right to life’ group. They believe that all life is sacred and to kill any form of human life is immoral. There is also a moderator between the two, they hold the view that only in certain cases is it acceptable, for example rape.
The father of the foetus to be aborted has no right to be consulted or
One of the toughest issues to debate in our world today is abortion. Abortion is the induced termination of pregnancy before the fetus can survive. Nowadays, abortion affects all people, not just the mother and the baby. There are moral, ethical, health-related, political, and religious aspects that affect how people feel towards abortion. By looking at religion and its views, one can see just how hard it would be to argue in the pro-choice position of this debate.

While the Year of Mercy has ended, Pope Francis, a Doctor of the Church, has encouraged Christians to be merciful by incorporating the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in their way of life. For example, he has allowed priests to administer one of the Seven Sacraments, Reconciliation, to those who have committed the sin of abortion. Before, because of how serious the sin is, those who commit abortion would have to consult a bishop for their sin to be forgiven. Due to this act Pope Francis has instituted, it is easier for those that engage in the act of abortion to have the courage, or fortitude to confess their sins. As well as this, Pope Francis instituted World Day for the Poor, which will take place every Thirty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. Therefore,

Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus
