Communication and professional relationships
With children, young people and adults.
When working within a school environment you have to have effective communication and also show you have strong communication skills to convey to the other people within the environment that you are approachable. You need to make sure all the individuals feel valued and secure. However you also need to set clear ground rules for effective communication and this will develop a mutually effective relationship. The best forms of communication are as follows: * Verbal – speaking, using appropriate language for the age of the person * Non - verbal – Sign language, body language and eye contact *

As a teaching assistant/learning mentor, you are able to take more time with students to enable effective communication, whether this is one on one support or a small group. The students will benefit from this as they have been able to understand more comprehensively the task at hand, however if they do struggle with anything we can take the extra time with them to give them guidance which will help the student fulfil their learning potential.
There will be times within your profession as a teaching assistant that you will have to cover break time duties and you may find you have to deal with disagreements. The best way to do this is to separate the children from any crowd that has gathered, this ensures you can listen effectively from both sides. Speak separately to the individuals concerned to hear both sides of the story. You may also ask them what they feel the best way is to resolve the matter; this will then give the individuals the chance to speak openly to what they feel is required to resolve the matter. For example saying sorry, shaking hands etc. Explain the outcome of the resolution for instance the game of football can resume, or friendships can remain happy. If the disagreement still persists then write an account of what has been said and pass this onto the a teacher or head teacher, explain to the pupils the consequences that this carries for example sending a letter home or calling the parents in. Teena Kamen states “Use eye contact and
As a HLTA, communicating with fellow colleagues is essential to success in the work place. Identifying peoples strengths and weaknesses, and working together to overcome any weaknesses will lead to a highly successful school environment, as no one will feel like they are struggling and everyone works closely together to help each other out. This is done in morning and evening debriefs, this gives us as teaching assistants and supporting assistants time to figure out where to implement strategies and who with in order for it to work in its best form. I also recognise bonds between particular children/young people and particular staff members, and when that child/young person requires a particular level of support, then I would actively seek
Schools employ and have teaching assistants, to again, create the best possible learning environment for the pupils. As a teaching assistant I will work as part of a team working to make the pupils learning journey, a successful one. I will attend staff meetings and continue to develop my skills through in-house training and other relevant courses. I will maintain and contribute to school policies and procedures, and work in partnership with parents and carers on behalf of the school.
Effective communication with children is important to make sure that they understand the language of learning so that they can grasp concepts and ideas, actively take part in problem solving and successfully develop their own ideas and opinions. It is important for children to be able to feel welcome in the classroom environment and valued within the school. Encouraging children to ask questions, give their own answers and contribute to class activities will help to develop a positive working relationship with the children. It is
It is important that you take the time to understand the cause of the conflict and why it has happened. Listen and hear what is being said, if a child does not think that he or she is being listened to they will get even more upset or angry.
My role as a teaching assistant is to take on tasks such as preparing the classroom for lessons and clearing up afterwards, which allow the teacher to concentrate on teaching. To support pupils with particular individual needs, sometimes my role is to work one to one, while others work in small groups or work with one of these groups. The teacher is not able to give every pupil individual attention, assistants provide essential support to the pupils and the lead teacher. My responsibilities also include:
Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults alike. It is the central key to establishing and maintaining such positive relationships. It means listening, questioning, understanding and responding to match each individual’s stage of development, their age, personal circumstances and their needs. It is important for the communication to be on the same level as the person you are speaking to so that neither person seems to have more power than the other. Good communication is not just about listening and speaking, it is also about watching and feeling. Excellent communication builds trust in relationships with all.
To communicate effectively with anyone, you need to speak clearly, using different pitch and tone to create interest. You should talk at a pace that is neither to slow or monotonous, nor so fast that others can’t understand it. It is important to know the stages of language development. You should also be aware that if you are working with a pupil with special needs, their communication development will be different; this could be for reasons such as autism, speech and language problems, or a hearing impairment.
Communicating with children, young people and adults in an educational environment is an important part of a professional relationship
It helps to build a positive relationship with those that are within your team, as well as showing that there is support for one another within the structure. When there is team work, responsibilities and tasks are shared and are completed more effectively and also in a good time scale. Each member or person has their own skill and or expertise, communicating with them helps you to learn, build up your own knowledge and know your own responsibilities. Communication is an invaluable tool in team work; you can ask for advice or even give advice about certain subjects or topics, as well as sharing ideas on them too. When it comes to the pupils, communicating between each other is important as you will share information on the chid such as the child’s welfare, medical information or even their progress within the classroom. When adults are working effectively together and are working as part of a team, the children will see them as role models and will follow, copy and mimic what they see. Not only using it in and around school, but also when they are at home. To a parent this shows that the school are setting a good example to its pupils, which in turn will give the school respectively high standards and a great reputation.
It is a normal part of growing up for children to fall out have disagreements and arguments from time to time and to always get on with everybody. As a teaching assistant it is part of your duty to ensure the children feel safe and protected from harm,it’s a very delicate subject to tackle and to balance it correctly when things go wrong with the children as it can often be your instinct to get involved and sort things out for them but if you do you are stopping the children learning themselves there responsabilty and own desitions although there can be times when things are to difficult and overwhelming for the children to cope with on there owns and they will need the adult advice and support ,most there
When working in school and speaking to others you need to be aware of others and be considerate towards their feelings, thinking about the way we communicate in different situations in school. Different ways you communicate depends on where you are in the school setting such as meetings, talking to a parent, talking in the staff room at dinner time and talking to the children. In all situations you need to be aware and read the schools policy for communication and make sure you follow it in school at all times. Communication in school could be speaking face to face, talking on the phone, letter, fax or email. We need to keep in mind the way we communicate with others and the way we present ourselves and the use of our body language and who we are communicating to. Make sure you bend down to a child’s eye level, make eye contact, but also remember that this may be uncomfortable for some, such as a child with additional needs or speech impairment. We can change the way we communicate with these children or adults by using picture cards or notes. The different cultures may communicate differently; you need to be aware of this.
I handle disagreements in several different ways. One of the ways that I handle disagreements is by stepping back and relooking at the matter at hand. I then look at both perspectives and try to resolve the disagreement. Another way that I handle disagreements is by respectively disagreeing with the person or agreeing to disagree. There are several other ways to handle disagreements like removing yourself from the situation, being cautious with what you say, and by putting the situation behind you. All of these actions are effective ways to handle disagreements. As an educator it is our job to chose which ways is the most effective way to handle the situation at hand.
I would like to communicate but not over communicate. In my experience, I have had administrators over communicate with the staff. As a result, it was a turn off to the staff. I always heard the teacher say, we got another email. The more he communicated the less credible he was. I have also had the experience to work for an administrator who did not communicate at all. The staff felt abandoned, lost, and sometimes felt helpless. I want to communicate like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I want to communicate with my staff not too much, not too little, but to communicate just
I currently work at Lumber Liquidators. My position is “pit operator.” I am responsible for the information of the hardwood floors before they go to warehouse storage. After I received the work’s schedule, I carefully read it. I put wood’s information into the computer and then send them to the printers. I also operate some machines such as strap-machine, forklift and elevator. In case of any issue happen to those machines, I call maintenance man, describe the issue, and learn how to fix them if happen again. Similar to my work, in my English class, I often communicate with my classmates in order to share information about lecture and to do assignment. Communication in class such as listening to people idea, sharing my opinion, and writing
