The novel, Tangerine, is full of thrills, surprises, action and secrets. The protagonist, Paul Fisher is a middle schooler who damaged his eyes because he apparently looked into a solar eclipse. Paul’s brother named Erik Fisher is a junior from high school who is really good as a field goal kicker, but bullies Paul. Paul’s family goes by the Erik Fisher football dream which is getting Erik to college football. However, things change once Paul’s family moves to Tangerine, Florida. Secrets get revealed, stories change and Paul discovers more about his past. He learns more about the bully living right next to him. In the novel, Tangerine, Edward Bloor strategically uses theme and motif to show conquering fear. First of the all, the novel, Tangerine, uses theme to show conquering fear. The author’s purpose into choosing this is to show him becoming brave as we seen in page 261 when Paul states, “I’m not afraid of you Erik. Come on.” Later, in page 262, Paul shows his bravery by saying, “ ‘I’ve already been in the right place at the wrong time, you lowlife creeps. You pathetic losers. I was under the bleachers on Tuesday afternoon.’ I raised my fingers like it was loaded and pointed it at Arthur. ‘I saw you kill Luis Cruz.’ ”. The author’s purpose in using motif is as the nature is weird for him. In page 81, it states, “I looked and saw the entire portable get swallowed up by the mud.” From this is says there is a sinkhole and later we can see Paul showing bravery. In page 82, it states that, “We pulled and grabbed at kids as they made their up… ”. These two quotes expresses the intense danger brought upon the school, but it shows Paul conquering his fear to save others. Paul showed that he conquered his fear by showing it during the sinkhole
