Taking a Community Sociological Inventory Pinkey Oliver Northcentral University Trends and Current Conditions The Dearborn community has experienced a transformation in population of the last ten years. This transformation can be due to a number of issues, but it begins with the surrounding cities not just the city of Dearborn. Examining the current trends and conditions of the Dearborn community, it is important to focus on the population and how it is broken down. There are 96,474 people that live in Dearborn, MI and 89.1% are white. Arab Americans fall under white Americans which are not stated on any census. It is very difficult analyze sociological demographics when it is not …show more content…
The question that arises is how we can make Dearborn more desirable that would attract individuals who have a bachelor degree or better to want to live in Dearborn, and have their children attend school in Dearborn. To attract individuals to the city of Dearborn, there has to be a better understanding of the true ethnic composition of the city and also job opportunities that are available. U.S. census lacks diversity in the white alone category. Arab Americans has to represent a large portion of the white alone population. It is imperative to know the portion of Arab Americans when trying to implement change. As it states now, white individuals represent 89.1% of the Dearborn population. It is imperative to know how much of the 89.1% represents the 29% that have a bachelor degree or better. The importance of knowing the correlation of the population and the educational level is to help understand the income level. Understanding why the income median is $46,972 will have a correlation to job opportunities in the city. Looking at the correlation opens up the doors to households and persons in households. The socioeconomic status of an individual’s parents has always been one of the clear-cut forecasters of the individual’s academic success and educational accomplishment. The correlation between family socioeconomic uniqueness and student accomplishment is one of the most forceful patterns in educational scholarship; however the reasons and means
I live at 383 East, 143rd street and my zip code is 10454. It is an area in which Latinos are the main population. This area is called Mott Haven in which there are many public housing projects. I live in one of the housing project in which my neighbors I can see they are mainly Hispanics and Blacks. Around my specific zip code area, there are different neighborhoods. In addition, even though these neighbourhood are very close to each other, there are still a lot of differences between them. I will focus on the varieties of people’s races that inhabit certain areas of the zip code 10454 and how certain areas have more schools while other areas have more businesses.
In my research of Austin, Texas I found out several interesting facts regarding the demographic makeup of the city. For example, the racial breakdown by race is whites 68%, blacks 8%, Hispanic are at 35% and foreign-born 18% The makeup is obviously different when you compare Austin to the US as a whole, however, it is interesting to see the “total picture”. The following is the breakdown for the US whites 72%, black 12.6%, Hispanic 17%, and foreign-born 13%.
The Houston Area Survey shows how the city of Houston has progressed over the span of thirty-five years into an immensely diverse city that the rest of America will come to look like in the future. The city has grown from being predominately Anglo to having a nice population balance between Anglos, Latinos, African Americans, and Asians. In terms of Latinos in Houston, the study places emphasis on the differences between the first generation who are foreign-born, second generation who were born in the United States with immigrant parents, and third-generation Latinos who were born in America with American parents. The study explores the differences between the generations on their socioeconomic status including education levels and
The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn’t, and the only ones who benefit from such a system are white-skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and especially in the city of Providence, more and more educated Caucasians are leaving to seek a more fertile economic environment.
I thought cities had more diversity, more poverty, and low income household than suburb areas and this was supported by the above data. I learned that the increase of wealth and income in a small community hinders the rest of community where middle and low income families live. The ability to live in a “good” neighborhood is linked to income. Income can be one of the factors that determine how a region can be segregated. Even in the city, the income of the household separates the lower income families from the higher income families. High income families tend to live together and low income families tend to live in the same
The first neighborhood Hartigan describes in his study is Briggs. The demographic and population size of Briggs changed over time since 1930 from 24,000 residents that were 99 percent white to less than 3,000 residents that are over 50 percent white, 30 percent black, and 10 percent Hispanic (Hartigan 1999). Hartigan explains that the reduction of white residents was known as the “white flight” that occurred as the neighborhood changed overtime. Despite the drop in white residents, they still comprise the majority, which contrasts the demographics of Detroit as a whole (83 percent black, 11 percent white, 7 percent Hispanic/Latino, and
When I moved to this area, we looked to live in a “better neighborhood” not only because we felt safer, but we also wanted to ensure my daughter received the best education opportunities. While it is challenging to make changes and ensure we are benefitting all students, I feel this is a larger part of why I am currently getting my degree in this field; so that I can be a voice of change and seek out ways to benefit all students to reach their full potential.
The city of baker is compromised of subdivisions and commercial properties, but also has lowlands, woodlands, and farmland. It is a small town located north of Baton Rouge and east of Zachary, La. The population that I am assessing is adolescent ages
The statistics regarding the Bronx and Queens depicts a substantial difference between the two boroughs. The population in Queens is nearly a million more compared to the Bronx. However, the major cause of death for both happens to be Heart Disease as it takes the lives of thousands in the districts. The racial and ethnic composition is vaguely alike besides the percentage of Hispanic or Latino, Asian, and Black or African American. The Bronx has practically double the percentage of Hispanics and African Americans, yet, Queens has 22.3% more Asians than those in the Bronx. Nevertheless, the boroughs happen to be very diverse despite the differences. There is still a wide gap between the level of median household income as Queens is much more
Historically, many of the suburban towns and neighborhoods around the major U.S. cities served as homes to poor and minority residents, offering cheaper living spaces due to the marginalized and inconvenient geographical locations with several negative reputations. Yet, given the big cities’ overcrowded environment and expensive living cost, these suburban areas are now popular destinations for people who seek for a less-crowded and affordable neighborhood to dwell. According to statistics by Kolko (2016), in 2015, the population of overall U.S. suburban neighborhoods increased by 159 million people, while only the total of less than 80 million

The literature thus firmly supports the thesis that socio-economic status is directly correlated with academic success, due to the superior financial and social capital resources available to the middle-class student. Furthermore, the interdependence between multiple factors means that the cumulative impact of risk factors may be greater than the simple sum of separate factors (Sparks, 1999:10)
Starting in 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) used a four-category response scale for respondents to answer a question on how they view their own health, known as the self-reported health question (SRH) (Smith 2005, 1). The four-categories used were: poor, fair, good, and excellent (Smith et al. 2017, 385) Starting in 2002, the GSS started using both a four and five-category scale for people to respond to the SRH (Smith et al. 2017,1537). The five-category scale used the same measures from the four-category scale, but also included “very good” as the fifth option. The question is: which response category form gives a better ability to determine SRH among people?
