Switzerland Key History
Immigration
When the Federal State was founded in 1848, Switzerland began to industrialize. Foreigners from neighboring countries came to Switzerland for work. Post World War II labor shortages in Switzerland brought more immigrants into the country (Ruedin, Alberti, D'Amato, 2015). Switzerland has been shaped immigration, and how the immigrants from neighboring countries settled have in separate regions (Appendix: Map 1). Throughout Swiss history, immigration has been a highly debated topic. Several immigration laws, decrees, and people’s initiatives have been put forth to control immigration (Ruedin, Alberti, D'Amato, 2015). Currently, Switzerland is in the midst of a refugee crisis, which is creating more debate

There are four dominant political parties (swissinfo.ch, 2017). Switzerland has one of the most advanced direct democratic political systems in the world (swissinfo.ch, 2011). Citizens can write and vote their own legislation and change passed legislations (swissinfo.ch, 2011). Thus Switzerland values public opinion. This will allow us to cultivate two-way communication. Democratic systems create environments where public relations can thrive. Economic System Similarly to the US, Switzerland has a prosperous, developed economy. The country has “low unemployment, a highly skilled labor force, and a per capita GDP among the highest in the world.” (cia.gov) Unlike most European countries, Switzerland’s official currency is the Swiss franc, not the euro. Developed economies create good marketplaces with economic competition. As public relations practitioners we must cultivate public interest for our business in order to be competitive within the marketplace.
Switzerland is not a member in the EU, but it closely partners with them (cia.gov). The country's economy is reliant on its European neighborhoods for raw materials and the purchase of half of its exports (cia.gov). Thus, our business must develop relationships with the EU and Switzerland's neighborhoods. Activism There are limited statistics indicating the level of activism in Switzerland. It is important to talk with the local partners to determine the
The United States of America is the best place for immigration. The history proved that the United States was the dream land, the place of chances. That started when Europeans escaped form their countries because there were no jobs and no safe places to live. America became the best choice for people who were looking for political asylum, jobs, or freedom, but after a few generations something changed the Americans look to immigrants as strangers and they forgot where they are from because America is multicultural place and immigration movement should be understandable, but this is not the case. Governments should develop good laws for immigrants by giving rights to immigrants to stay in America, to protect them, and to allow people who
Refugees have been the spotlight in many countries in the past few years. In Canada, refugees where mainly sourced from Syria, Eritrea, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Congo (Puzic 5). The difference between refugees and immigrants is “refugees are people who have fled their countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution. They are not able to return home” (Government of Canada 1), but immigrants are people who chose to leave their country and settle in another for their own reasons. A lot of people do hate the fact that refugees have been the main focus recently, and how “they have been treated better” than our own people, but that does not beat the fact that there are many advantages that come from the refugees. Refugees bring the advantages of increasing the country’s population, boosting the country’s economy, and increasing the country’s diversity.
Many people are unaware of the heartbreak that takes place on our border in the south. Between the media and uneducated Americans, the immigration at the border needs to be addressed or our country will be overrun with illegals according to the news and social media. The true heart-breaking story cannot be told or our country would not stand for this inhuman behavior. There are many reasons for crossing the border illegally. For instance, women could be fleeing for their life, looking for freedom, wanting the chance to raise their family without the fear of abuse, or just because someone told them their life would be better if they could just get into the United States. Regardless the reason, everyone should at least be asked why they are willing to risk their life and their families lives to live in the United States?
When you have substantial amounts of people subsiding in a general region you will always have those who agree with certain policies and those you disagree. In the case of the US immigration policy, there was a considerable amount of people who had strong opinions on America's way of running their immigration system. Many interviews, articles, speeches, and cartoons were created to show the harsh insensitivity they felt was being portrayed in immigration. A Senator of New York named Meyer Jacobstein made several thought-provoking claims towards the policy. He started with a point against the committee, “ One of the purposes in shifting to the 1890 census is to reduce the number of undesirables and defectives in our institutions. In fact,
On Monday night, the Denver city council passed an immigration ordinance that forbids city officials from asking about anyone’s immigration status or requiring anyone to discuss it. This law makes it difficult for the federal government to track and arrest immigrants. As a result, people have become fearful that these immigrants will cause harm to the public through robberies and murders. Many people are afraid of the unknown and seeing the kind of damage immigrants have done in the past, it automatically makes people assume that every immigrant is the same. For example, the field director of ICE made a statement that “this irresponsible ordinance...deliberately obstructs our country’s lawful immigration
Immigration is both a domestic issue and global concern. It involves economics, politics, and culture. Unlike other current issues, it has been at the center of the American experience for hundreds of years (Tirman, John). Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants from around the world, come to the United States. These immigrants have many different motivations as to why they leave their home country; but as currents events indicate, it is injustice, poverty, and violence in their own country that generally make people move to save themselves and to ensure a better future for their families. Many of these people believe the United States is the best place to go, because there is more freedom, protection, and benefits,
9 voluntary agencies existed whose job was to “coordinate the refugee’s eventual resettlement with local sponsors into communities throughout the United States.” (Povell)

The first immigrants to the territory now constituting Canada were from Western Europe. The first great influx began early in the 19th century when large numbers of Europeans left their homelands to escape the economic distress resulting from the transformation of industry by the factory system and the concurrent shift from small-scale to large-scale farming. At the same time, wars, political oppression, and religious persecution caused a great many Europeans to seek freedom and security in Canada.
Total inhalation of immigration would not be a healthy choice for the United States. However, setting out for stricter laws to become a citizen is in need. There are over 11.7 million illegal immigrants in the United States (poll 2011). Therefore, having restrictions on immigration overall can help the economy grow, security at airports, docs, borders, and on the streets would not only lessen the illegal immigrants around the country, but supply more jobs for Americans. Illegal immigrants not only live in the U.S, but are supplied jobs in which were made for American workers.
From 1995 to 2005 swiss citizens voted over 30 different times, while the french citizens only voted twice. In direct democracies the citizens have most of the power.
Research Question: Is Switzerland’s direct democratic government more efficient than the united states representative government?
Immigration to the United States has been happening since the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock in 1492. America is one of the most diverse nations in the world, attracting people from every corner of the globe in hopes of a better way of life. America in the past has relied on migrant workers to balance the economies growth when internal resources have been exhausted; moreover, the agriculture business has depended on the seasonal employment of migrant workers from Mexico to meet the labor demand. Programs have been created in the past granting work contracts for the flood of Mexican labor into the United States, and new work programs are being analyzed to suffice the needs of
All my life, my mother and father has told me how hard it has been to support our families in Vietnam. The economy from here to there is so horrible that we have to support them. We're always sending at least about a million in Vietnamese money which is equal to about a hundred in American money due to the currency between America and Vietnam. Because of these two reasons, I am in favor of having better immigration process for people who come outside the US.
European Union represents economic and political partnership of 28 states, with population more than 500 million people who can travel within its territory without considering internal borders. It operates as a single market with standardized laws and guaranteed freedom of movement of people, goods, services and capital. As such, European Union is attractive destination for all kind of immigrants, from people in search of a better life from unfortunate and unstable regions to highly qualified work force who are looking for greater business opportunities. As European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in an interview for Time Magazine (Oct. 24,2007) “Europe is an
