Immigration
When the Federal State was founded in 1848, Switzerland began to industrialize. Foreigners from neighboring countries came to Switzerland for work. Post World War II labor shortages in Switzerland brought more immigrants into the country (Ruedin, Alberti, D'Amato, 2015). Switzerland has been shaped immigration, and how the immigrants from neighboring countries settled have in separate regions (Appendix: Map 1). Throughout Swiss history, immigration has been a highly debated topic. Several immigration laws, decrees, and people’s initiatives have been put forth to control immigration (Ruedin, Alberti, D'Amato, 2015). There are four dominant political parties (swissinfo.ch, 2017). Switzerland has one of the most advanced direct democratic political systems in the world (swissinfo.ch, 2011). Citizens can write and vote their own legislation and change passed legislations (swissinfo.ch, 2011). Thus Switzerland values public opinion. This will allow us to cultivate two-way communication. Democratic systems create environments where public relations can thrive. Economic System Similarly to the US, Switzerland has a prosperous, developed economy. The country has “low unemployment, a highly skilled labor force, and a per capita GDP among the highest in the world.” (cia.gov) Unlike most European countries, Switzerland’s official currency is the Swiss franc, not the euro. Developed economies create good marketplaces with economic competition. As public relations practitioners we must cultivate public interest for our business in order to be competitive within the marketplace.
Switzerland is not a member in the EU, but it closely partners with them (cia.gov). The country's economy is reliant on its European neighborhoods for raw materials and the purchase of half of its exports (cia.gov). Thus, our business must develop relationships with the EU and Switzerland's neighborhoods. Activism There are limited statistics indicating the level of activism in Switzerland.
