Many middle to lower class families cannot afford to send their kids to school and with Ivy League schools like Harvard and Princeton giving out generous financial packages to their student, who mostly come from wealthy background. The poorer students are on the losing end because they are not given the opportunity for aid. As Terry Hartle, the senior vice president of the American Council of Education, says, "Smart poor kids go to college at the same rate as stupid rich kids." What this is saying is that the wealthy families have vastly more opportunity to succeed in the college system even though they have equal or lesser smarts. Well respected schools such as NYU are now admitting students based on the financial fit not by merit.

The first determinant of one’s fate is their family’s background. Almost none of the children from low-income families made it through college. With the expenses of college today, I’m actually not surprised by that statistic. Of the children from low-income families, only 4 percent had a college degree at age 28, compared to 45 percent of the children from higher-income backgrounds. "That 's a shocking tenfold

Recently there has been a lot of debate about the importance of college education. Students are asking if it’s worth the debt to attend a four year university or community college. Some are thinking what are the benefits of a degree is in the workforce. With college tuition increasing and state fundings lowering, low income students are struggling to attain a higher education. College institutions should have a role to provide students higher education and equal opportunity to students to increase social mobility yet intergenerational reproduction of privilege has produced inequality in education.

However, when a student wants to attend college after high school, the chances of going to any school of his or her choice can seem unfair and have unequal opportunity to other peers. Unfortunately the idea of being limited to attending certain schools has a big influence in chances of becoming successful. Even though higher educations seems to have a direct path for high wages, the access to college can have reverse effects on intergenerational mobility. By limiting access from someone in a bottom percentile to have the possibility to attend a good college harms their upward mobility. In efforts to help breakdown an understanding of how education affects intergenerational mobility, a study called Mobility reports cards show significant findings. Mobility reports cards were conducted by collecting administrative data from more then thirty million college students in the years of 1999-2013. “We obtain rosters of attendance at all Title-IV accredited institutions of higher education in the U.S using de-identified data from federal income tax returns combined with data from the National Student Loan Data System. We obtain information on students’ earnings in early adulthood and their parents’ incomes from tax records.”

With the growing importance of higher education, more people than ever are attending college. According to a middle-class parent, “[Higher education] seen as a means of developing a career and getting secure employment.” (30, Higher Education, social class and social mobility) Moreover, “parents believe that their children need a university education to get on in life… over the past decades (parents) fearful that without a degree their children will be in danger of downward social mobility. In their article “The Upside of Income Inequality” authors Gary Becker and Kevin M. Murphy argue that the solution to income inequality is to have more and more students attend and graduate from colleges. Becker and Murphy imply that students from “broken households” earn lower grades and test scores, therefore reducing their chances at entering and staying enrolled in colleges due to subpar cognitive skills. Throughout the article, charts are shown to show promising statistics of students of all ethnicities being successful in colleges. However they later state:

Many wealthy people didn’t graduate from college. For example, the creator of Facebook Mark Zuckerburg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and Twenty-one time Grammy winner Kanye West. All these individuals make a life of college dropout. They make their life sound enticing, we must remember that they are exceptions rather than the norm. A college degree is a common goal for families and a baseline requirement for jobs In the United States. A recent Pew Research study found that 94 percent of parents expected their children to go to college. The college attendance has not always been the case. During the 1940s, college was mostly a privilege of the wealthy. The most college students were white males; women and people of color were often barred from entry. The change began during WW2 ended, however, that began to change. The first major change involved the G.1 Bill in 1944. Students and their families make tough decisions when they think about attending college.

In “The College Dropout Boom”, Leonhardt states “There is certainly much to celebrate about higher education today. Students from all classes are getting degrees and reaping the benefits” (3). Families and independent people have been taking polls to reveal their understanding of what class they are in. Most feel that their push of effort in the education department has really been able to help them step up the ladder. Also, they say that they may be in the same class, but that their children have been able to step up because of the higher education that they have

In the article “Who Gets to Graduate” by Paul Tough examines a problem about low income students are less likely to graduate from college than students from middle class or wealthier families. In the United States, school systems are not created equally. Middle and upper class students have access to safe and modern schools equipped with everything they possibly need to stay in that high rank because they came from a family who has the money to support their studies. Students from low-income families don’t have a lot of the support, stability, and money from home that higher-income students can take for granted.

Jay Matthews presents a different view on college admission in his article Multiplying Benefits of College for Everybody by showing the positive impact college has had on many, specifically low-income women, to make a statement on how important equal opportunities are. Matthews says, “at the moment only about a third of American adults have graduated from college, and the economy appears to have room for many more” (143). Matthews also points out that “millions of low-income Americans, their data demonstrate, have the ability to use college to acquire new skills and capabilities that improve their lives, and their children’s lives, in significant ways” and that “higher education… still is one of

Since urban areas, and subsequently urban high schools, have a high population of low-income residents, it is important to explore how this aspect of their social status has affected these individuals historically. According to Mantsios (2006) a majority of the United States (60 percent) hold less than 6 percent of the wealth. What is more, one in eight people live below the federal poverty level Mantsios (2006). This is important, because class level is strongly correlated with educational outcomes and success, which can be explained by class domination Mantsios (2006). Essentially, people who are born into wealthy families versus poor families have more opportunities provided to them on the basis of their class status or familial connections Mantsios (2006). A leading reason on why middle and low income students tend to drop out of college before getting their college degree is that they could be unknowingly be following the example of their own parents who may not have gotten a degree of their own as young adults. In many instances the parents of middle and low income students did not have the opportunity to attend college ,or had too drop out of school because of the demands of a growing family. Sometimes life gets in the way and

For many families, the idea that higher education for themselves or their children will automatically improve their social or economic status is a common one. In many situations this can be the case, however it is not universal. Additionally, many factors come into play when analyzing how intergenerational mobility does or does not occur. Some of these factors include existing social class, field of study, undergraduate vs. advanced degrees, race or gender, selection of institution, and parental resources. The general hypothesis of this study is “Is a College Degree Still the Great Equalizer?”

However, parents who live below the poverty line find it more difficult to send their offspring to a school that offers even mildly decent education. In contrast, financially stable parents have far more access to resources that can aid their children, such as tutoring. A lack of proper schooling can serve as a hindrance to the needy children in the future and prevent them from ever ascending the economic ladder. Statistics show that only 3% of students at top colleges come from the poorest quarter of the population (“Inequality and the American Dream” 1). The educational institution has become the primary determinant of social class, explains Professor Roy in his lecture on education in modern society. As American society puts such high value on education, there is a greater need for individuals to achieve associate, bachelor and master degrees (Pace). The path to reaching these degrees is different for each person, but the initial step if one wants to attain them remains the same: graduating high school. In his book Savage Inequalities, Jonathan Kozol found that not every high school is on the same playing field (Kozol 267). While the divide centered on financial wellbeing, there was a strong correlation to the race of the student populations at each school (Kozol 264-265).
