Children need guidance and personal example from the adults around them to help them learn what is acceptable and what behaviour isn’t acceptable. Behaviour is greatly influenced by primary socialisation and children will react and take in how close family members act. Bandura developed the modelling idea where children would copy the adults around them. “There is much evidence that a child who witnesses or experiences violence at home may develop aggressive tendencies.” There are a number of different types of behaviour these include assertive, aggressive, submissive and manipulative behaviour. If a child has a feeling of control in them and their lives then there confidence and self esteem will be lifted and this will help their behaviour. If a child is given the chance to make their own decisions they will feel important and in charge helping how they act. “Play should empower children, affirm and support their right to make choices, discover their own solutions, to play and develop at their own pace and in their own way.” Children can behave badly due to many different reasons; one most common cause of bad behaviour is separation and changes in a child’s normal routine as joining a nursery is usually the first time a child is separated from its parents. Parents are usually able to stay with their child for a little while to help settle the child in. The key worker system is useful as this will help the child feel safe and secure with that person. “It is often helpful if the same member of staff welcomes the child each day, particularly in their first few weeks of attendance. This helps build security and gives both the child and their parent a focal point where they can say goodbye with limited distress.” Another strategy for managing behaviour is the ABC strategy, which is based on social learning theory. “Play is a process that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. Children and young people determine and control the content and intent of their play by following their instincts, ideas and interests in their own way and for their own reasons. The child chooses when and how to play and this is seen as a biological drive, essential to health and well-being.”
If any problems occur to the child, they can return to their secure base which is their key worker, who can offer them comfort. Although key workers are not there for children who have not formed an attachment with their parents, they are they to offer support and comfort. The strength of Bowlby’s approach is that it has introduced the key worker system, which has helped a great deal with supporting children’s needs and development. Key workers can track their progress and plan and implement activities which promote their development. While working at my last year’s placement in a nursery setting, I was informed that each child had a key worker assigned to them. I observed that when parents would leave their children, some would cry and get upset, the key worker would then take them aside and comfort them or try to distract them. Having the key workers there for them made the child more emotionally secure.

As a practitioner, it is important you deal with unwanted behaviour in a calm manner. This is because children and young people will copy what they see as their behaviour is affected by others around them. For example, if the practitioner shouts at the child saying play nicely or say go to the carpet for time out then the child will copy this behaviour and tell other children off. If adults show conflict then children and young people will get frightened and confused. This can also lead for the child to have unwanted behaviour. For example, if the parents be aggressive when dealing with conflict then the child is going to feel scared and confused on what is going on. As a practitioner, we need to acknowledge how important play and leisure activities can be one of the cruel factor of a child’s development; Throughout my experience I have witnessed play to be extremely important to children’s and young people’s wellbeing and development.
Babies and young children’s development is closely tied to the quality of the relationships that they have with others and especially the key person within their early years settings. Usually babies and toddlers do no like to be separated from their parents or primary carer, and therefore it is important that babies and young children are supported by a key person in their setting who will act as a temporary substitute for the care, love and attention that is usually provided by the parent. When the key person system works well within a setting, both parents and children are able to feel comfortable and relaxed during their time apart.
Learning obedience is an important part of early child development. Obedience is the main tool parents use to train their children. Through obedience your child will use things he or she needs later in adulthood that force obedience upon a child will soon create resentment within their children, which will eventually lead to rebellion.
Children develop normally when they are exposed to different types of play that allow them to express themselves while using their imaginations and being physically active. According to the Center for Health Education, Training and Nutrition Awareness, “Play is child’s work”; this is true because it is a child’s job is to learn and develop in their first few years of life, in order for them to do this, they play (CHETNA). Not only is playing a child’s full time job, the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights listed play as a right of every child (Ginsburg). Besides from the child having opportunity for fun through interaction with another person, a rougher and more challenging (though still comforting) environment that is beneficial for development. This type of play which is more predominant when provided from a father can present the child the opportunity to learn his own physical boundaries, the effect of its own actions on its surrounding world, and to learn about its own emotions while discovering the notions of winning and losing. Studies have proven that interactions with the father through play and otherwise teach children to become more emotionally aware of themselves and others. Studies have shown that these children will also get along better with siblings and peers better due to these emotional developments (6). These benefits for the child can also have lasting effects into later life for developing relationships with others. The father figure is also usually more responsible for influencing challenges and trying new things for young children. This is significant for the development of the child’s problem solving skills as well as his or her self-esteem when able to succeed in new or challenging situations. These can also help build independence as a father figure tends to allow the child to explore the world and try things out for him or herself. Most of the time, aggression is acquired through modelling the violence that we observe in our everyday life (Bandura & Walters, 1959). Albert Bandura showed that children learned new aggressive behaviours by observing aggressive models (Bandura, 1973) and that they do not just imitate the specific behaviours that they see, but viewing aggression changes their schemas and their attitudes about aggression. Helping behavior has been a challenging topic to analyze over the years. The familiar case of where a Good Samaritan rescued a little boy who almost was kidnapped beside the road when other children only stood there witnessing the horrid incident. During the incident, they thought that adults would help him instead of themselves. They also had looked at him, but decided not to help because they were afraid of the consequences or because they did not know the victim. Helping behavior needs to be observed among individuals to ensure peaceful and safer coexistence. Although several people have claimed that helping is an individual’s choice, a social scientist, Arthur Breaman’s research has shown that when individuals are educated on the five stages of helping behavior responds to the situations that require a helping hand twice as fast as compared to those that have no idea of the five stages (Slater 109). His statement is clearly valid; therefore, in order to reduce crime, lack of concern among individuals as well as swifter response to situations, and the five stages of helping behavior needs to be introduced and be taught in schools.
