Student academic success is a direct reflection of how a particular school system is run. From kindergarten until fourth grade, I attended large public schools and I performed poorly in all of them. I was placed into learning support services that would clarify new concepts and reduce the amount of class work given to me. However, it did little to help me, and after fourth grade I attended High Point Academy, a charter school that changed me entirely. During the first month of fifth grade, I was given daily reading assignments that I got no help on. For the first time I could think on my own, and I was passing with perfect scores; my teachers took notice and placed me in advanced classes. Taking advanced reading let me think critically about an argument and craft my own thoughts. This inspired me to love learning. From fifth grade to a current freshman at McLennan Community College (MCC), I have been an avid learner because I went to High Point Academy. The charter school experience allowed me to learn without being told how to think; my teachers ultimately pushed me to become a better student. Reflecting on this, I …show more content…
For instance, 40% of the survey respondents stated they have trouble with time management and procrastination. Specifically, most survey respondents find having multiple assignments and tests spanned across several classes, with three week long due dates, are difficult to plan for. Students are fooled by the illusion of having copious amounts of time so they wait to do their assignments. Similarly, having the same number of assignments and tests from each class, but in a one-week time frame, is stressful. Since students do not have enough time to study and do quality work for each assignment in one week, students fail when they can easily succeed. In either case, time management and procrastination keeps students from being
Using some simple time management skills can give the student the ability to complete tasks without feeling overwhelmed. Insufficient communication between myself and the school also crippled my studies. Over this course, I’ve learned to excel as a student the importance of new time management skills. The transition although stressful is exciting and eye opening. It's a completely different experience versus the typical college classes I was involved in when I enrolled in traditional college after high school. I will admit I am disappointed in myself this course for falling behind, being side tracked I’m unsure how far behind I’ve become. There’s one thing this has taught me and that’s discipline with my schedule because I find it's easy to get
College Success: Chapter 1 is a great recourse for every student whether they are experienced or not. Specifically, descriptions about the best possible choices made to get the most out of your experience are plentiful, and self-assessments are included to evaluate a starting point. If one were to follow the step-by-step advice given, such as overcoming obstacles and enriching your learning experience, it would be close to impossible not to have a great experience at college. The author wasn’t afraid to delve deep into the fact that college is difficult and requires a lot of commitment to follow through. The information given is easily suitable for a wide range of students, including anything from discovering resources many colleges offer,
Allocating more time towards having fun rather than focusing on schoolwork or studying in general also affects student’s time management. Since they have every opportunity of flexibility with minimal boundaries involved, there is the urge to enjoy the newfound liberty, and as a result, neglect of assignments, deadlines bypassed and incompetent test results. For that reason, the commitment to study is only realized when exams are approaching thereby causing panic to the student as the realization that class materials have not been covered starts to arise.
The initial shock of the significant workload and expectations can take their toll, but good time management skills can prevent multiple late nights in a row to get assignments done on time. Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. Lucier’s fourth and final step is to not be afraid to seek help with your time management, she states: “The most important thing to have for time
This article “Students of Success” written by Lynn Cheney was very well written. Cheney’s point in this article is that students in liberal arts shouldn’t be over looked in the world of business. She explains that students in liberal arts have the opportunity to become anywhere from Management to the next president of the united states. People should understand that its not the field you major in but it’s the way you use your major. Cheney states that students who follow their hearts in choosing majors will mostly end up laboring at what they love.
Professor, Mike Rose reflects on his high school teacher, Jack McFarland, stating “He tapped my old interest in reading and creating stories. He gave me a way to feel special by using my mind” ( ). Rose implies that school before meeting Mr.McFarland had sucked the life out of an activity such as reading. This is not just with Rose, there are many high schoolers that would say that they do not read anymore. Ironically, schools are supposed to instill the exact opposite of that. Suli Breaks identifies that “If education is the key, then school is the lock”. It does not have to be that way, education is the key to success in which case for most it is sought through school. Education and school are interrelated and are meant to help everyone and therefore should not be about “regurgitating facts…[but about] inspiring one's mind” (Suli breaks) . Benjamin Franklin once said, “tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”. Accordingly, schools must adapt to the children’s learning styles and involve them in everything so that they feel like they are learning. Grades can be positive if the students are able to understand and have a take away message from each
Many students do not have enough time due to the countless hours doing excessive school work. Students have assignments that can and
In this week’s reading, Clear Pathways to Success, George and his colleagues recorded that students from Project Documenting Effective Educational Practice (DEEP) institutions overall do better as a student. DEEP institutions acculturate their students about the schools programs, resources and values as well as aligning the students with the available resources and letting the students know that they can use them whenever they need them. DEEP institutions acknowledge that if they make the curriculum too exhausting students may drop out. But if they make it effortless the students will not challenge themselves. That is why DEEP institutions believe it is best if the students feel more of a community or family so that they feel like they belong
Some of the main arguments the author acknowledges is the amout of students who do not succeed either in high school or college. Points are signed out by explaining how the lack of money or education frustrates the students. A topic is mention based on how even graduated students do not succeed as much in life. These people took college for four years or more, invested a lot of money, and ended up being a truck driver or working with sewage. Which makes no sense because they received a certificate to earn a good amount of money and unfortunitly have to look somewhere else because of the need of money. Topics like this or lack of money and education are frequently repeated.Freshman college students fail the most because instead of being taught
Time is a critical factor which influence student’s entire lives. To be successful in college depends on how students organize and prioritize things. According to the University of Wisconsin “Green Bay: Managing Time for Success in College” tutoring services tells, “Time is one of our resources. Effective time management is a skill most people need to make the most out of their personal and professional live. To college students, it can make the difference between a mediocre and superior performance.” Many students experience troubles coordinating tasks with their time; consequently, they have poor academic performance. However, students need to realize time, they have to learn this skill, so they will be able to improve their grades, having more time to do their homework, prepare for their next classes and they can deal everyday with different tasks. Gutierrez, claims, “Time management is the perfect solution to help students stay focus, so the earlier students manage their time the easier school gets... but most importantly, what time management does is allow to get their work done in a fashionable time.” All students that take advantage of these tutoring programs learn how to create a schedule plan for all activities they have, including personal. Students achievement also depend on how dedicated and disciplined they are, colleges offer support for all students who need to improve their

The National Rankings of education, rank schools based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare students for college. Anaheim High School is an unranked school, in order to increase student success at Anaheim High School they should reinforce protocols like SSLANT. Gladwell’s article briefly, states what SSLANT is. KIPP Academy from The Bronx in New York uses SSLANT. Students are to walk quietly down the hallways in a single file. In classrooms, they are ready to collaborate in a protocol known as “SSLANT: smile, sit up, listen, ask questions, nod when being spoken to and, track with your eyes.” There is no time for socialization and getting unfocused when using SSLANT. Most public schools near ghettos and bad neighborhoods have a student enrolled that makes educators driven to hopelessness, KIPP Academy has been stereotyped like that, except that once
The kind of student that I have been is the kind of student that does classwork as best as I can, but if I have trouble I usually don’t ask and i don’t do very much homework. A way I have discovered I am successful in studying or homework is putting a note somewhere obvious to remind myself to do it. I also think flashcards are very helpful for studying. A way that I am struggling in homework and studying is that I am lazy so I don’t want to, I am bad with time management, and I procrastinate too much. In order to be more successful in this class I would have to stop using the internet because that is my go to for procrastination. I don’t think that that is realistic to drop completely even though I would like it to be it has taken over a lot
What do think when you hear student success? Many people think different things. For example, student success could be a student having a good job in something they specialized on, and are living on their own without anybody's help. There are several different ways student succeed and ways to change schools in order for their students to succeed as well in this article. For instance, Anaheim High Schools can improve student success if we have longer school days, make the student be interested in school and on what they are learning, and having more after school programs that interest kids and will keep their minds off of bad things.
