Stereotypes In The Movie Crash

In both episodes of the television show “Cops”, the predominant race of the police officers was Caucasian. The primary officers for all service calls featured on the program were Caucasian. Of the two episodes observed, only one officer was African American. The suspects in both episodes were predominantly African American or Hispanic. Of the 6 scenarios featured throughout both episodes, two suspects were Caucasian.

Stereotyping is a major issue in the world today, however, mostly in the United States. It is known as fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance (The New York Company). Crash is a great example because it shows others stereotyping individuals in many ways. According to Schingel, it is the perfect analogy of how we as a human race deal with life, people and our own experiences. The movie, released in 2005, shows each character's point of view, rather it be from an African-American, Caucasian, or a Latino. It follows each character throughout the movie to show how they live their daily lives.

This is proof that there is racial discrimination in law enforcement that affects police brutality. This also reinforces the culture of people of color being less human than white people, which takes its roots all the way back to slavery in America. When slavery was still prevalent in the United States, white people believed that black people(slaves), did not feel pain like they felt pain. After slavery was abolished, black people were still strongly regarded as inferior to white people and white people still saw them as wild creatures rather than human beings. White people saw themselves superior to every other race of people, so it was common for them to mistreat other races that weren’t white. This mindset is not as strong as it was in the past but, it is still strong enough to affect the choices police officers make during interactions with people of color. As a result of discrimination at the police level, many people have turned to court system’s to reach justice.

When Ferguson, Missouri exploded after the police shot an unarmed black teenager, the tension between the community and its protectors was laid bare. Ferguson is not the first and certainly not the last community forced to bridge that chasm. In South Carolina a policeman shot an unarmed black male who was stopped for a seat belt violation. The cop asked the male for ID, who then reached under his seat to retrieve his wallet, but was shot in the leg by the cop before he could take out his ID. When the body cam video was reviewed it shows that the trigger happy cop probably was in fear of his life, however it is also obvious that the cop shouldn’t have felt threaten as the behavior of the black male involved nothing unusual. Many would say if the driver was white the cop would have not reacted the way he did.

Most people are born with good hearts, but as they grow up they learn prejudices. “Crash” is a movie that brings out bigotry and racial stereotypes. The movie is set in Los Angeles, a city with a cultural mix of every nationality. The story begins when several people are involved in a multi-car accident. Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a mischief younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his wife, a racist cop and his younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife, a Persian immigrant father, a Hispanic locksmith and his young

Crash is a movie about race and stereotypes and its effects on the various people living in the Los Angeles area. The movie boost racial awareness and it requires close observation from the viewer. We see a variety of races including African American men and women, several Hispanics, a Middle Eastern family, and a few Asians. We see the ups and downs of each character and it helps us see where they are coming from, and potentially why they are racist against different people. It seems that we almost begin to feel sorry for the different characters regardless of what they are doing or how they are acting because of each of their circumstances.

While the film “Crash” has several complex characters with storylines that all become interconnected in various ways, the movie is predominantly about how prejudice plays into people’s everyday lives and how such prejudice usually has negative implications. The characters in the film all had their own prejudices, or attitudes judging others in negative ways, which set the stage for discrimination, stereotypes, racism, and scapegoats. Thus, one can see how prejudice plays such a pivotal role in people’s relations with each other. As a result, it is best to analyze this film from a symbolic interactionism point of view by analyzing how the labels the characters encounter in this film affect their perception and in turn create prejudice

Discrimination, racism, classism, prejudice and more plague today’s society. These horrible issues do not affect one race, sexes, class, ethnicity, or age group; these issues affect all races, both genders, all ethnicities, and all age groups. For this film analysis, I have chosen to discuss the racism portrayed throughout a three-time Oscar award winning movie called Crash.

He makes all the African American boys around him sit down. He says to the boys on the grass, “ yall making me F**king run around here with god d*mn gear on in the sun, cuz you wanna screw around out here.” He starts walking towards the lady’s and proceeds to tell them if they start running their mouths they are going to go too. He forces the girls to leave very offensively. The girls get upset because of how the officer is speaking to them like they are nothing but animals. One of the girls isn’t havening it and he talks back. The cop did not like this and he brings her in view of the camera and pulls her hair and in doing that pulls her to the ground. You hear eveyoen I nthe video get upset because that’s a female no one should be treated that way especially a female and a young one at that. She could really press chargers. The officer then pushes on her back and head forcing her to the ground and people start to come up to the officer trying to stop them. These two boys especially and the cop draws his gun on them. Two more cops come into the video and they move the officer gun and they run

Police Brutality has stemmed from racist attitudes, discrimination, and prejudice to African Americans. In the movie “Fruitvale Station” the subject of police brutality is touched on through the true story of Oscar Grant III an African American young man who was assassinated in 2009. The movie follows Grant who is played by Michael B. Jordan in his final twenty-four hours of life. The shooting takes place after Grant and his girlfriend are on the subway returning home in the early morning on New Year’s with some friends. After a fight breaks out on the subway the police are called and Grant and his friends are taken off the train and handcuffed after a verbal altercation between Grant and the police officers one of the officers takes out and shoots Grant. Grant is taken to the hospital where he passes away. The officer who assassinated Grant was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and spent a year in jail. The main theme this movie follows is police brutality. The reason I chose to discuss this movie is because Police brutality is a very large issue that has occurred too often in the past few years in this country. Oscar Grant is one of the many African American men who have lost their life and left behind a family because of senseless police brutality. Police Brutality is a very difficult issue to discuss because people should feel protected around police rather than fear for their lives and for many people of color this is their reality. Police brutality solely stems from racist attitudes, discrimination, and prejudice of African Americans in the United States.

Crash is a movie that had several detailed events of sociological concepts. The movie Crash showed that everyone created has good intentions and good hearts but unfortunately they may grow up and learn the prejudices of the world. "Crash" is a movie that brings out racial stereotypes; as the movie is set in Los Angeles, a city with a diverse race of every nationality. The movie starts off with several people being involved in a car accident. We are then taken back to the day before the crash, where we are shown the lives of many of the characters, and the difficulties they may encounter during that day. In this society we are all interconnected: family, work, and culture; all of these systems help to shape our beliefs and world views. One 's bias, one 's values, one 's stereotypes and assumptions is the direct result of one 's culture. The movie Crash was a very fascinating movie. I never knew what was going to happen in the movie it portrays prejudice by one member of a group or culture against another member of a group or culture. Crash was like a melting pot of ethnicities, and they were all defined by racism. The movie reinforced those peoples’ assumptions about a person or group prevents them from seeing the true person, in addition to Crash being a movie about progressing.

The film, Crash, reveals the lives of numerous individuals from diverse socio-economic classes, who have life changing experiences in between their differing prejudices and stereotypes. Racism and predispositions are major themes that evolve throughout this movie, with sub-stories that are interconnected to one another. As the story unfolds, events begin to play out, and the revelation of how characters begin to change in their perspectives and attitudes toward each other is witnessed. All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people indifferent from themselves. But sometimes it isn’t one person racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self.

Raheem and Stewart’s death still resonates within today’s interaction of young black men and police officers. Through the last decade examples of this issue have played out within the case of Eric Gardener unjustly being killed by the NYC Police Force, Trayvon Martin in Florida, the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, the death of Cedrick Chatman by Chicago police, and many more. The topic of police brutality has been a reoccurring theme throughout the past 30 years, and more often than not the officers convicted of the shootings are not indicted due to their position within the political system and society. In the movie there is a scene with black cops and a scene with white cops. Both of these scenes contrast one another in terms of the vibe they introduce upon their appearance.

In the film, the white male police officer shot and killed the African American male because he was running away. He stated that it was going to either be his life or the boys, and the only color that matters is blue. This is antagonizing the Black Lives Matter movement, but this represents the black community coming as a whole to unite and to make a statement. But don’t all lives matter? However, blue is the color of a uniform, not a race. Once a police officer is out of uniform or not on duty, then they are the same color they woke up as. Police officers should not be placed in neighborhoods where they are scare to be or not able to handle certain situations that may occur.
