Step Brothers Essay

How many 40-year-old unemployed slackers do you know? Now imagine 2 of them under the same roof obnoxiously fighting about childish things. Step Brothers from start to finish is exactly this displaying 2 outrageously comical actors in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly bickering back and forth trying to learn how to cope with one another. The glory of this film comes from the constant one liners that make no sense but fit the film perfectly, the childish behavior, and the elementary school comebacks mixed in with the adult language which adds a different but great comical sense that few movies have been able to portray before. Such as when Ferrell refers to Reilly as a “Big, fat, curly-headed f***”. This line had me rolling on the floor due to the seriousness of Ferrell and the reaction of Reilly and the fact that it is a simple 3rd grade insult with an F-bomb thrown in there that just makes it all that more funny. Although Talladega Nights and the Anchorman trilogy had better storylines none compare to the pure comedy that Step Brothers provides. Step Brothers is Will Ferrell’s most entertaining movie made to date, and is one that can be watched over and over without losing its humor.

Scopophilia is defined as the pleasure in looking. There are three kinds of looking in film: characters looking at other characters, cameras looking at the characters, and finally, the audience looking that the screen through the camera. The only way to change how women are viewed in cinema is to disrupt the looking. Through the narrative and technical structure in Stepford Wives (1975), the traditional male gaze is questioned while at the same time the main character, Joanna, is given her own gaze.

Jack, get back, come on before we crack.” (Footloose, Kenny Loggins) For this essay, I chose to watch Footloose made in 1984 and directed by Herbert Ross and Footloose made in 2011 directed by Craig Brewer. Both movies centered around the town of Bomont, a secluded town with out of the ordinary beliefs. In this town, dancing and partying of any sort was strictly against the law and teenagers were seemingly miserable. There was little to no self expression and even listening to provocative music or any music too loud, could get you a ticket with a hefty fine. The reason behind the strict rules is that several years back, five teens from Bomont High School died in a car wreck after they were drinking and dancing too much. Each of these movies have some things in common, but have more differences than anything. Some of the main differences are the opening credits of each movie, how and who Ren arrives to Bomont at the beginning of the movie, the “chicken” races between Ren and Jeff, and the book burning in town square.

The title of the film that I watched was Flyboys. It was Directed by Tony Bill and was released on September 22, 2006 in the United States. Some of the main cast members were James Franco as Blaine Rawlings, Jean Reno as Captain Thenault, Jennifer Decker as Lucienne, Martin Henderson as Reed Cassidy, and David Ellison as Eddie Beagle. The genre of the movie is action, adventure, and drama. It was based on a true story. This movie takes place in 1916 in France before America joins World War I. The Americans go over to France to learn how to become fighter pilots to help France against Germany. Their squadron is known as Lafayette Escadrille.

The movie for this essay is Brothers (2009), the film opens with Captain Sam Cahill as the main character who is a marine captain. Having been married to her high school lover, they had two daughters. This is an indication that Sam was also a family man. Before Sam is set to depart to Afghanistan, his brother Tommy is released from a prison where he had been convicted of armed robbery at a bank. After Sam departs to Afghanistan in October 2007, news emerge that Sam’s chopper had crashed in an operation and all the marines inside it had died.

Richard Linklater’s Boyhood leaves the audience questioning, asking, and wanting more. The entirety of the film is a recollection of memories and experiences throughout the course of Mason’s childhood. Overall Boyhood is like an unsolved puzzle with missing pieces that aren’t enough to solve the puzzle. The entire movie is questionable and has so many gaps in-between each memory that there really is no plot. Since there isn’t a plot it makes you question if it is really about boyhood, about family, maybe Mason’s childhood, or girlhood. Certain questions begin to formulate like, why doesn’t Linklater use the typical format of storytelling during Mason’s childhood? How come we never know what happened between Oliva and Mason Sr? Cinderella Man is a movie about what life was like in the 1930s during the Great Depression. This time was hard for almost everyone because they all had to find a way to make money to support their families. Living from payday to payday can be very stressful and lead to some families to split because of the stress. Before the depression people were prospering, the economy was great and most were happy. Once the stock market crashed most people lost all or most of their money and went from being rich to dirt poor. Many men left their families because they were unable to support them and they felt shame. Some people sold their kids to strangers so that the kids would have a better life and then the parents did not have to pay for them

Boy interrupted” was a really well shot documentary. However, I found it very difficult to watch because it was hard to the affects suicide handle on a family and I found a heartbreaking. Also, watching some of Evan’s Home video clearly showed how mentally ill he was. When he was singing a song that he had written it was clear that he was dealing with some heavy emotions. The fact that he was singing about being depressed and how he wanted to kill himself when he was seven years old was upsetting. when I was seven I remember not worry about a thing, being incredibly happy and having fun. Traumatic experiences, difficult home lives, and the effect of drugs can leave a significant imprint on the rest of an individual’s life. The context which individuals are surrounded by during their developmental years has a significant impact on their mental health and development. In the documentary, The Bad Kids this idea is depicted through the portrayal of adolescence and early adulthood periods of the individuals at Black Rock Continuation High School. The film portrays the lives of at risk teens, who are given a second chance to get their life on track and earn a high school diploma. However, there are complications and set-backs that are holding them back from accomplishing their goals.

This movie was made during the 1970’s, so once the color came out is was much easier to realize what kind of movie it was going to be. The last two movies that I watched the lighting was extremely similar, most likely because they were made within a decade of eachother. Both Step Brothers and American Pie, both are easily noticed to be a funny and happy comedy. They are both started off with a bright scene for example, in both of the movies they start off in bright rooms and then the rest is history. In specific 6 minutes into step brothers the two clowns are standing in the nice sunshine introducing who they are, while 9 minutes into American Pie they are at a party together with the lighting high up to show how positive the scene is.

Well, the only way to find out is to dissect a movie and what makes it great. A movie can be critiqued in a variety of ways, but one of the main criticisms is how the visuals explain the story, and bring it to life. The story of a movie, and how it flows, is the pivotal component that draws viewers in and keeps their interest. With movies, one effective way to critique a movie is to observe the believability, and impact of the acting. Film is a visual media, this is a known fact, however, fitting music can contribute to setting the mood, and tone of a movie.
