Statement Of Purpose: Family Nurse Practitioner

I believed in your mission statement, especially, this part, “dedicated to provide high-quality, accessible medical care to underserved communities, regardless of their inability to pay.” I also believed that community health nursing is one of the best ways to reach the most vulnerable and under-served in our society. The reason why I decided to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner was based on my community health care experiences from volunteering in a community based family clinic that served low-come population and doing my community hours during my BSN program. The lack of health literacy that I saw firsthand that exist in underserved population about the importance of preventive care, vaccinations, and chronic illness management

Like most other professions, nursing is controlled by government regulatory agencies and professional organizations. For instance, boards of nursing in various states are the government entities mandated to regulate nursing at the state level, while the American Nurses Association is a professional organization that governs nursing at the nation level. Regulatory agencies and professional organizations are guided by the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

My name is Leonardo Mastache, of Cuban origins, and I have been a nurse for exactly ten years. Most of my work have been in medical surgical and telemetry. About eight years ago I relocated from the crowded city of Miami to Naples, Florida, which I find to be a pleasant place to live in. Here I work at Naples Community Hospital (NCH), and recently transferred to an oncology unit to gain some understanding of how to work with patients that have been diagnosed with different types of cancer.

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner Student (FNP) at Frontier Nursing University (FNU). My passion to care for people was evident when I was growing up and I knew I wanted to become a nurse and care for the sick when I cared for my grandmother who was not feeling well. After high school, I started my career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) and worked with the elderly population which I really enjoyed. I worked as a CNA as I enrolled to school and earned my Associate degree in nursing in 2011. As an RN, I continued to work in a nursing home and rehab facility with the elderly as I decided to pursue my BSN. Upon completion of my BSN I found a job at a hospital in cardiac telemetry heart failure unit where I enjoy working as I care for people.

After high school, I am planning to transfer to a four-year university. I would like to get the necessary degree to become a pediatrician. Sometimes thing do not always go as planned and you must have a backup plan. If I do not end up going to four-year university, I plan on going to a community college to a get a job where a major degree is not needed. I would probably go to a community college to become a certified nursing assistant. I would want to become a CNA because my dream would be to work in the medical field.

Nurses play a very important role in the field of health care throughout a lot of people lives. From helping patients with basic hygienic tasks to assisting in surgery, nurses are trained and educated to help patients to the best of their ability and they do their very best. There are four different types of nurses you may see when visiting your doctor or local hospital: nurse aides, licensed practical nurses, registered nurse, and nurse practitioners. Each type of nurse responsible for different nurses have a different level of taking care of someone. Nurse aides, or nursing assistants, are nurses that perform basic patient care tasks under the supervision of physicians and supervising nurses.

It is said that the environment of our upbringing plays a salient role in determining the ambitions we pursue, the moral values we cherish and ultimately, the lasting contributions we make to society. I firmly believe that my formative experiences laid down the foundation for passion for nursing and constitute one of the salient reasons why I am determined to pursue this profession. For me nursing, is more than a mere vocation, it is a moral commitment, the manifestation of my natural talents and the actualization of the deep-seated aspirations that I have nourished since childhood. My mother was an accomplished nurse and always set a remarkable example for me to follow by displaying virtues of compassion, moral courage and dedication to the public good. My life experiences compelled me to emulate her example by cultivating the virtues of compassion and genuine sensitivity to patients. My formative experiences and core values led me to enter this career in the capacity of a Certified Nursing Assistant where I was distinguished for not only my competence as a nurse assistant, but also for my remarkable sensitivity to the needs of the patients. I intend to continue to actualize my natural talents by pursuing a career in Nursing.

In Nigeria, I had a first degree in animal science and one year post graduate in Public Administration. I got married at the age of 29 to my husband who was a medical doctor. I became fascinated about what goes on in the hospital and how nurses and doctors related to their patients in a compassionate and patient manner. Since then I started developing interest in nursing. Sometimes I end up helping my husband to prepare food for the patients when they don’t want or like the food served to them at the hospital. I also keep the patients company when I am free. I realized that what some of these patients need is them talking about themselves without them being judged. Just sitting and allowing them to talk is very therapeutic to them.

Since I was a little girl I have always aspired to become the strong, caring woman that my mother is. As an Army nurse, I knew that caring for the sick and injured was what my mother did for a living and I always admired her compassion and desire to help others. Although she is compassionate and caring Helping others has always been at the forefront of my chosen major during my undergraduate studies. Studying psychology at University at Albany has allowed me to see the capacity of which a psychologist would work in.

My interest in nursing began when I was a young girl, being part of a dance group that traveled to nursing facilities throughout Pennsylvania to bring joy to the elder population. This experience introduced me to the healthcare field and developed my perception of both the caregiver and patient experiences. Also, contributing to my interest in the nursing field was caring for my terminally ill uncle, with my mother, until he passed. Originally, being only 9 years of age, this experience made me angry and confused, however, gave me motivation to find out more information such as what treatments we were taking him to, why they didn’t cure him, what was cancer, and how does it take a person’s life. Finally, I have always excelled and had a love for science and math, which has assisted me through achieving my dreams of becoming a registered nurse. Dedicated, motivated and respectful nurse, with experience in multisystem progressive care unit, seeking to gain education and training at the University of Cincinnati to start a career as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and help patients across the lifespan to understand, and manage acute and chronic illnesses.

When comparing the roles of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), it was found that all of these specialties’ were referred to as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN’s). Each of these unique nursing roles are responsible for coordinating patient care in a variety of settings and scopes of practices that is specific to the role’s of the APRN’s. APRN’s care for patients in primary and specialized care settings and the scope of practice for each of the specialized nursing roles varies from state to state (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014).

I am writing to express my interest in joining your extraordinary group of Certified Nurse Midwives. As you all know, I am an April 2017 graduate of the University of Michigan Nurse Midwifery program. During my clinical semesters in the program, I had an incredible volume and variety of clinical experiences at Planned Parenthood in Detroit, Henry Ford West Bloomfield, and of course at the University of Michigan Health System. I hope to begin my career as part of a full scope midwifery service at a hospital such as U of M that promotes autonomy for CNM’s and promotes physiologic birth. Once reciving my nursing degree from Montana State nursing program I will be looking for a job in the state of Montana. I am particularly drawn to rural medicine and there is an abundance of small communities in Montana that are in need of nurses. In the future I plan on continuing my education and become a Nurse Practitioner, with a specialty in internal medicine. While shadowing a NP in internal medicine I was amazed at what this job entails. The challenges of their daily job as well as the responsibilities they hold, was inspiring to witness. To become an NP in Montana is my dream job and with the help of the accelerated nursing program I believe I can accomplish that dream.
