Mathematics is all around us, it is in our electronics, architecture, economics, many more, and of course in school. Everyone has to take some kind of mathematics class no matter where they went to school, regardless of their feelings toward mathematics. A great amount of students feel as if mathematics, especially advanced mathematics, is not useful for everyday life. Others feel the multiple step process to solve many mathematics questions is too difficult and time consuming. The math dictionaries on the iPads will assist the students when they hear unknown vocabulary during class or during math videos and this will help to strengthen scores on math that require math jargon. Graphing calculators on the iPads will help to save money from having to buy new calculator each year that continue to be broken. Also with the use of iPads to work out math problems will help save money on materials such as a large amount of paper and toner that is spent to make the worksheets. E-textbooks can also be installed onto the iPads, which can save lots of money spent on textbooks each year for buying newer versions or broken textbooks. Microaggressions can be any commonplace comments that are intended or not, to offend another person. However, one might think individuals would be aware if they inherently said something offensive. Microaggressions are even apparent in standardized testing and academia as test writers and teachers can unintentionally degrade students with a seemingly innocent statement. Standardized tests are allegedly supposed to test student’s knowledge of what they have learned or previously known. Turgut suggests for the United States to redefine success in a broader manner. Currently, the way success defined by the US is depicted as “rigid, narrow, and uniform” (Turgut, 2013, p. 68). This type of measurement for assessing students does not fit the culture of the States. The nation before NCLB, Goals 2000, and Common Core have contradicted the traditional educational culture based on respect and embracing diversity, culture, and talents (Turgut 2013). Thus, far policy makers have advocated for education reform that has opposed what the culture and traditions of education have been for years.
Math has been around since the beginning of time, although “Pre-dynastic Egyptians and Sumerians represented geometric designs on their artefacts as early as the 5th millennium BCE”(Mastin). However, students have one big question, “When will we use math in the real world”, and this has given people the thought that the curriculum should be changed to only math that will be used in the real world, nothing more, nothing less. This is completely wrong due to many reasons, one being that the math that is taught today already gives us the necessary knowledge that can help us succeed in a future job(Shane), the curriculum taught today gives individuals much more of a variety of math(Ehret), and lastly the math taught in the curriculum that we use today helps kids understand other subjects better(Glosser).
Health care is a huge issue in America. A lot of people do not realize that one of the reasons most students do not attend school in urban areas is because they have no health care. Their parents more than likely don’t work a job where there is no health care provided and they make to much money to qualify for medicaid. Its a never ending cycle. The schools that do poorly on the test are usually in the urban and rural areas and they get as much funding as the other schools. I encourage an atmosphere in which mathematics is appreciated simply because Maths is beautiful. Examples of the beauty of mathematics: a well-constructed proof, a simple trick/technique to solve a problem. Mathematics can be viewed as an art, a beautiful work worthy of admiration. If the student sees math as not only a means to an end (e.g., to apprehend physical processes) but an end in itself, he/she will ultimately develop respect, admiration, and then aspiration for the subject.
