Sports are an important part of daily life, and those who play them experience many benefits that make them a more well rounded person. They not only provide multiple physical benefits, but also tons of mental ones as well. I have been involved in baseball since the age of three and can definitely notice these compared to non-student athletes. The advantages of playing sports include valuable life lessons, social skills, and future employment. First, playing sports teaches many valuable life lessons such as responsibility and a hard work ethic. Responsibility is very crucial in life, and people use it everyday. Teamwork is a crucial aspect because a team wins together and loses together (Grown and Flown, 2016). “A number of studies provide support for the premise that physical activity, and sports in particular, can positively affect aspects of personal development among young people, such as self-esteem, goal-setting, and leadership” (Aspen Play Project, 2015). Playing sports allow students to make new friends; they realize other people also have the same interests as them. Through teamwork, athletes experience leadership, another aspect of teamwork. Captains must socialize with everyone consistently and usually need to be well-liked. Leadership can also affect how a team plays. It is hard to have a great team without superb leadership and teamwork, making it necessary to have both. Socialization also includes what people do in their free time. “Compared to non-athlete peers, females are more likely to disapprove of others using them (Geier, 2012). According to Grown and Flown (2016), Teens who have practices, games, team dinners and fitness sessions have less time for mischief, and in a study, students who participated in sports were found to be happier (Grown and Flown, 2016).
