In today's world, people view social media as either a social benefit or a social detriment. Social media helps us with our day to day lives like helping people connect with one another, determine whether or not someone would be fit for a job, and allows us to have easy access to news, but it does have its downfalls. Some of these downfalls include cyberbullying, overexposure, and making us to addicted to our technology. One benefit of having easy access to social media is that it helps people stay connected with one another. The easy accessibility allows those who are nowhere near each other to talk and communicate. This is a drawback when it comes to being so connected because it can really affect people negatively. Another plus side of easy access to social media is that it allows us to get our news very quickly. When it comes to getting important information on recent events, like politics and natural disasters, social media can widely benefit us to getting this news quickly and efficiently. A great example of how social media gives us our news quickly is with the recent devastating events of hurricane Harvey. When this devastating hurricane hit in Houston, Tx, news outlets used social media to help let people know what safety precautions to take and what the people could do to help those who were greatly affected by the hurricane. The down side of the easy access to news via social media is that it can lead to overexposure on things that may not be as important as politics and natural disasters. Overexposure on these topics that have no importance and can distract us from these topics. Instead of having us focus on pressing political topics and natural disasters the social media will draw our attention to more “flashy” news like the controversy on standing for the national anthem at football games when we could be focusing on the devastating aftermath and helping those in Puerto Rico. One of the other things that can be a redeeming factor for social media is that it can allow people who do background checks see if someone is
This is because before news crews are able to get to the site of a story there are typically multiple bystanders who have already witnessed the situation. Now that these bystanders have smartphones and social media accounts, we are able to see their accounts of the story before news operations are even on the story. This also allows us to see a more complete perspective of major news stories as we get to see them from a variety of perspectives. In short, social media has made news on important events more accessible, while allowing us to evaluate these issues from multiple angles. All in all, it is clear that social media has its risks, but when used responsibly, and in moderation, it can be a fun community environment, as well as being helpful in career
