Take a minute and think to yourself on what you think policing will consist of in five or so years. With everything going on right now the way it is, it will be very hard to predict the policing in the future. This is starting to become a major story simply because we have shootings every single day killing more and more people. Those shootings typically involve law enforcement officers and members of the society. With news sites and social media constantly blowing the police stories out of proportion might lead to things getting even worse before they get better. Although things will take a while to finally get better, if everything is taken with caution and people start to settle down, things will in fact get better. In today’s society social media almost seems like it is starting to take over the world. With that in mind the future of policing will deal with a lot of social media. “As reported in August, about 95 percent of police agencies use social media. Most rely on sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to help solve investigations, either by fishing for clues or asking for tips from the public” (Moraff, 2016). With that in mind many of the law enforcement departments that use a type of social media have claimed it as being very effective for them in many different ways. Different departments use social media in various ways such as to help recruit more officers and to help strengthen their community policing ideas. Although this has not worked as well as it was
When the people become active in helping the police through social media, they help the police department build a positive reputation. This will generate a more positive feel towards the police and how they are portrayed through the media. Positive vibes are essential, especially in today’s society given how big the Black Lives Matter movement is. With this, there would be more light hearted news segments about the police which could result in a safer environment for the police and the people.
Being in law enforcement it is very important to have an effective relationship with the community so that public safety is maintained and effective policing is conducted. Unfortunately, one of the biggest issues that have made it difficult for years to have an effective relationship with the community is that the a lot of people in the community believe that police are misusing their power by using excessive force and unlawful actions against people. Social media has also played a big role in making it difficult for people to trust law enforcement due to the fact that anything can be posted at anytime. Trying to rebuild the relationship with the community is very important to overcome the lost faith the community has and to show them that law enforcement is

But the one thing about social media that is does not warn you about is just because it is somewhere where you can go to express your beliefs and values, does not mean other people cannot criticize you on your views. Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat - all these are called social media and they have a critical impact on the way young people think and interact on a day to day basis. “Virtual Communities” (Lee, 2015) is about the virtual world and how it affects the physical world and the influence it has on the lives of people on a daily basis. “Enhancing Your Body Image” (Donatelle, 2015) is about the influences that media or outside sources have on the way people view their bodies and how people feel about themselves. The main similarity between the two concepts is the influences that virtual communities have on the way people see themselves in the physical world. Since the 1990s, the internet has been gaining momentum, growing in popularity and relevance in today’s society. As a result, social media has been on the rise for communication, news, and entertainment, appealing to a wide range of ages and demographics. However, this increased use has also increased challenges to privacy, policy making, and ethics within the government. More recently, the Supreme Court addressed the relationship and challenges between the First Amendment and social media in 2015, ruling that it is difficult to accurately evaluate the intentions of others through social media posts. As the reputation of social networking sites are continuing to develop, the time users spend on these sites increase as well. It is to a point where the websites are accessible on their mobile smartphones where they can browse on a regular basis (Duggan and Smith, 2013). With this being said, users have the ability for quick access, thus prompting individuals to invest long periods of time with social networking sites. Through this capability, it can be perceived how this impact affects the formation of identity and how a large portion of their socialization occurs online as opposed to face-to-face interactions. These connections can be shown through the influence of social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Instagram.

For instance, imagine you go out with a friend on a Tuesday night and actually want to let the conversation drag; the youngsters tend to open Yelp and see different bars. This makes them drag the overall situation and without actually having a relevance to the scenario the two friends try to gauge in the attention of others also. This actually has confirmed the fact that balance has to be maintained in order to let the youngsters enjoy the overall advantages of social media (Tristan, 2016)
