Soccer Soccer is an international sport loved by many for its beauty and emphasis on teamwork. Fans are just as involved as the players, allowing a wide array of people from all over the world to join together in celebration of the best sport in the world. I enjoy the sport because I find the skill, teamwork, and spirit it takes to play the game amazing! Soccer is believed to have originated somewhere in China 300-400 B.D. In Japan the game appeared around 600 A.D. However, the game was actually developed in England. The game in China featured a ball of feathers and a tiny net of about 16 inches, while the game played in England was more similar to the modern day one. The goal of the game is to make goals. This is done by kicking the soccer ball into the opposing team’s net. Today the net is 7.32m x 2.44 m, the field is 110 m x 73 m, and the game is played with eleven players, ten field players and one goal keeper. Some of the health benefits are cardiovascular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and muscular strength and endurance. Since soccer requires continuous running, it is an aerobic exercise, which helps build cardiovascular fitness. It improves body composition by burning fats and building up muscle. It also improves muscular endurance and strength because of the shifts from speed (running, walking, sprinting) that occur throughout a game. Lastly, soccer improves flexibility through dynamic, ballistic, and static stretching. Dynamic stretching is featured in soccer warm-ups, ballistic stretching is used during the game when the players move about the field (jump up, lift their legs, or use arms for throw-ins), and static stretching is used to stretch the quads when one bends the leg up at the knee in famous flamingo
