College students tend to spend more times studying for an exam than they do catching up on their sleep. Therefore, lack of sleep is common among college students. The amount of sleep a college student should obtain is nine hours, but most student a lucky if they receive five hours. While not sleeping gives a great opportunity to catch up on homework, it has many negative effects on a student’s life. One of the most recognizable effects of sleep deprivation is the change of behavior. A college student that is not receiving the correct amount of sleep will become irritable. A restless students attitude may seem harsh to other people. This might make it hard for them to socialize with their classmates. A student that has not received the adequate amount of sleep may find everything and everyone to be obnoxious. A sleep-deprived student would prefer to spend time alone. While this may seem like a good idea to them at the time it may cause them to become depressed. Depression is common among people who do not get enough sleep. Another effect insomnia has on college students is the effect it has on their school work. A sleepless student may find it hard to concentrate on assignments. The lack of sleep may decrease a person’s immune system. This will make it easier for a student to become sick. The lack of sleep may also cause a student to overeat and become overweight. While not receiving the right amount of sleep a student might become drowsy behind the wheel of a vehicle and cause an accident. A person that has had few hours of sleep may find it hard to balance. As a result, this may make it difficult to walk straight. Not getting enough sleep can later cause high blood pressure and diabetes.
