Sleep is a basic necessity of everyday life. According to the National Foundation of sleep, a person is required to sleep at least seven to nine hours a day. (citation) As mentioned by Matt T. Bianchi in the book Sleep Deprivation and Disease, “ The normal quantity of sleep depends on the individual and a myriad of other factors such as environment and an individual 's waking needs.” (citation) This means that the quantity of sleep that people achieve depends on their body’s needs and functions. A person is considered partially sleep deprived if he or she gets less than five hours of sleep per night. Factors such as drinking coffee at night, obesity, stress, insomnia, and sleep apnea negatively affect the way one sleeps. As mentioned previously, sleep deprivation can affect one’s physically. Some of these effects include: obesity, type two diabetes and heart disease. Most of these effects are cyclical. This means that it is a repeating process.

What this is saying is sleep deprivation is a lack of restful sleep that accumulates when not enough restful sleep is achieved, this causes inability to preform daily tasks. One of the main symptoms of sleep deprivation is excessive daytime sleepiness in addition to poor memory, poor concentration, and depressed mood (Colten, Altevogt, & Institute of medicine, 2006). As time goes by for adults, sleep deprivation increases, and studies have shown that about 18% of adults in the US report getting insufficient sleep.

Manella supports her argument by presenting statistics that shows how adults that don’t enough sleep have chronic conditions. The author’s purpose is to raise awareness so that people will sleep more often and have a better health condition.
Sleep is a beautiful thing, but people do not get enough of it. It is a time for the body to rejuvenate and process the events of the day. Sleeping is something that we seek out.
