When it comes to the topic of attaining a college degree, most will readily agree that it is essential to securing a successful career post-graduation. Whereas some are convinced that a college degree does not guarantee entry into a career in one 's field of study nor does it determine success in one 's career, others maintain that a higher education is, in fact, the way to job security and financial success. What comes into question is whether the investment in a college education is truly worth it or not in order to accomplish a student 's goals of success. I think it could be said for most prospective college students that the reason for going to college is to gain the credentials required for most jobs today. What many of those potential students may not realize is the substantial percentage of graduates who do not acquire a job related to their majors, how much debt they will incur, and just how many students don 't graduate at all for reasons such as an overwhelming workload and a poor work/ life balance.

Standing on a stage with over a thousand pairs of eyes watching every second, nerves beginning to fill your stomach, and smiling from ear to ear trying to hide those nerves was what I had to do. All that can be done, at this point, was count down the time left before a single word had to be released from my mouth. The numbers three, two, one, ran like lightning through my mind, and finally, my name was called. I knew this was my time to shine. “Hello, I am Crystal Sandoval, and I want to become one of your next SkillsUSA National Officers.” My life stood still as I felt the nerves suddenly be released and transformed into words. At this point, there was no turning back, but rather share to over three hundred students from across the nation and our United States territories, what SkillsUSA has done for me. “SkillsUSA changed my life, and it has granted me the opportunity to make a difference not only in my life and in other students’ lives, but as well as making the difference in the United States of America.”

When I answered the questions on career cruising I found that my results were inaccurate as to the career I am interested in. The first career was mechanical engineer. Environmental engineer is the second on list. The career that I am actually interested in Software development and Computer science I did not get the results I was looking for in my career assessment. I will still look for a career in information technology when I enter the workforce but for now I will look into the jobs the field has to offer. I want to become a software developer and work for good software company, I hope it works out that way in the end. I disagree with the survey results because I do not want to become a engineer in those fields, I feel like being an engineer will be to heavy of a weight on my shoulders. Environmental engineer would not fit me because I am not a environmental type of person.

Skillsusa is a partnership within students and teachers for the work industry. Skillsusa helps student prepare for their future jobs and also has a 50 year tradition of developing leaders in career and technical education. One of my favorite skillsusa partnership is with cosmetology . In the course of cosmetology students demonstrate their skills as if you were doing hair you would demonstrate in haircutting, hair styling and hair designing, for that course the beginning all things are done to mannequins as they gradually learn they start working on humans. something that skillsusa also does for cosmetology and other work industrys are the competitions where the work industry student or SkillsUSA members are asked to choose and to

Union Middle School started a skills success program for all students during a homeroom type class that meet twice a week. I collaborated with another teacher in creating a program focusing on th students’ soft skills: organization, goals, time management.

The skills needed to be successful in today's workforce have changed somewhat for the better and somewhat for the worse, depending on the job. At some places that people are hired it seems like they hardly have to have any skills in order to get the job. Other places require a lot of skills before someone can even be hired and certain degrees must be obtained and tests must be taken. Fast food restaurants, grocery stores, and other restaurants should be a lot more strict about the types of people that they hire. There are certain skills that are required to be successful while working today, and there are some extra skills needed in jobs that involve working with people. (Brief Overview) Last year, I won Career Pathway Showcase at the SkillsUSA State conference, which led me to compete at the National SkillsUSA conference. My project was focusing on the skills gap in our workforce. My solution to this problem was to implement skills and careers in young students, from grades first to twelfth. Specifically, I used a program called Jump Into STEM!, which is a SkillsUSA created and State Farm sponsored curriculum. I continue to use this in my community to help others.

I am writing this for Engineering 1201 Practices and Principles’ Whole Life Concept Project Part 2. I have researched technical and non-technical skills that will allow me to reach my goals in the future. South African activist, Nelson Mandela, said “It always seems impossible until it’s done”, but how does someone get it done? I believe the answer to this question lies in the application of the abilities we learn throughout our lives. It is important to recognize skills as those that are more helpful to reach one’s goals and where to learn them. My individual passion is to make a difference in the lives of low-income communities around the world by building sustainable infrastructure. This will allow there to be more funds focused on improving the quality of life. One of my goals includes forming a nonprofit contracting company that will aid in the construction buildings and bridges. In order to make a successful company you need a wide variety of skill sets.

When you improve in any part during practice, you are a step closer to success. A comment on Reddit by username “drgk” commented, “ My hard work in school gave me the qualifications. My hard work in networking after my internship got me the job.” (Colvin, 11) Commoners such as drgk prove how hard work pays off with a better paying job and success in your profession.

I volunteered as a mentor and presenter to a local high school with Junior Achievement. I combined my academic, military and business background in a program for high school to motivate and encourage excellence in accordance with this program which focuses on developing leadership in business amongst our youth.

There comes a time in life where individuals have to leave school to join the world of work whereby they will work their way up to the top. This is where career development comes into place. Career development is defined as progress through various stages in a career (Schreuder & Coetzee,2011). These are stages one goes through in order to mature in a career and for development to even exist, one has to start with making a career choice then developing it .A career choice can be defined as the relation between people’s personality types and their different occupational environment in which they work in.

Unfortunately, the results of the career assessment surveys on www2.careercruising.com did not place my desired career as one of the careers it thought I would be interested in. Another thing the career assessments told me I was primarily a visual learner, but I had a secondary preference for tactile learning as well. However, it gave me a career that correlates with the subject I want to teach as my career, which happens to be mathematics (career: mathematician). This choice can be the match for lighting the fuse for the rocket that is my career path so I can blast off with my career in the future. However, I was a bit disappointed that these surveys did not land me with a “teaching” job, but one thing I can agree on is the fact that it landed me with a math-related career, because math is my favorite subject in school overall. Even so, these results might help me pursue my dream of becoming a middle-school math teacher if I work hard enough. In conclusion, even though some of these surveys’ results don’t match my interests, I can still work hard to prove them otherwise.

All of these are skills that I have enhanced in colloquium.
